I had a meeting with my case manager from NHS England.. During our conversation I highlighted the fact I had no educational sessions such as maths, English, IT. She stated that it is a legal requirement in psychiatric units. This affected myself due to a dip in my motivation and focus on my pathway towards future employment beyond hospital. I know I need to work towards L1-2 in maths and IT Due to all TES staff being deployed to the wards for the majority of 2023 all patients missed out on purposeful activities and importantly educational sessions. I rose this with my case manager who agreed this is unacceptable. The inability to complete these sessions during the staffing crisis affected my mood, motivation and focus on the future

Thank you for posting about your current experience with patients' education. As you correctly pointed out TES staff have been redeployed to the wards to cover nursing duties whilst we are facing difficult times. There is a recovery plan that has been put in place by the senior leadership team. Currently, education staff are still being used to cover nursing duties. Each week 10 staff are identified from across the care-stream day units to be released to help facilitate patient sessions. Education staff form part of that number and some education is still happening, albeit ad hoc due to the circumstances. This is similar for the other disciplines in TES. In the next phase of the recovery plan, we are hoping to release the Band 5 teachers as more staff are recruited to nursing posts. This is due to be implemented towards the end of October and when this happens, we will be able to offer a more structured programme. I do hope you are able to find the motivation to continue with education as we move forward through these difficult times. The staff are looking forward to working full time with patients again in their education roles. We are able to offer some sessions on and off ward, please speak to an education staff or your OT if you see them on your ward and let them know you would like to reengage with some education. Southwell is good The gym is good. The Southwell staff are nice. I enjoy playing the guitar with staff.

Thank you so much for your lovely post about the Southwell team, All the disciplines who work in the area do their best to ensure patients have a balance of meaningful activities as part of their programme. Things have been a bit challenging lately with staffing however we are starting with our recovery plan to have more staff back in the area so we will hopefully see more activities and therapies happening in the future. As a PICU ward we require a high level of staffing to enable the running of a safe and effective therapeutic environment. Currently we don't have sufficient staff levels to allow this. The vast majority of our patients are on LTS plans, and many have high unlock levels. The current staffing issues are resulting in many of our patients not been able to have their time up in the dayroom, or having their time cut short. Ward staff are trying their best & patients are trying to be understanding, but everyone is starting to feel the strain.

Thank you for your post. Staffing of late, has been a challenge for all, patients and staff. As you have documented below, I can see how engaged the staff and patient group are, working in unity, so the day can be utilised to its maximum. 2 full time staff have recently been transferred to the PICU (allocated in the last week), that will show up on rotas in the next month. So this should have a positive impact on the wards available staffing. The hospital management meets twice a day to look at the distribution of staff across the site. This is the fairest way we can ensure resources are distributed, taking into consideration last minute shortfalls such as sickness and absence. There has also been consideration afforded to what incentives we can offer to retain staff and recruit others. Enhanced pay offers have been made and agreed with the patient facing staff groups. Additionally, there has been a significant recruitment drive, with many staff awaiting start dates and induction. Its hoped that the introduction of the new starters and improved retention will enable us to ensure that LTS patients will have all aspects of their care delivered as per plan, in full, without hesitation or delay. The influx of new staff will also allow us to map out and plan a return of TES to their regular roles. The TES staff have been an amazing support for the wards in recent months, I'm really appreciative of that. I'm really sorry that you have had a negative experience in recent times. But I just want to know, and feel, that we are doing everything we can to address our current staffing shortfalls. I just want to take this opportunity to thank you, fellow patients and staff, for supporting each other through these challenging times.

Review titled Goodbye before she leaves

DRC/Managers I'm writing this letter as I know we are so short staffed that TI’s, TIW’s Education, are constantly being put onto wards. However on my account and the rest of the patients on the female service would like to do a farewell function for a very valued and well respected member of staff at the DRC. She is leaving to do her nurse training and she has worked on women's a long time and has really helped a lot of patients. She's also made a big difference to a lot of patients journies to recovery so I guess I'm asking is for one night is it possible if we can staff a function to say goodbye before she leaves.
