  1. Review titled Wonderful care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by MRS HELEN L CARCAS - Posted on 23 April 2023

I was admitted to hospital on Easter Monday 10th April 2023. The care shown by ambulance crew, the staff in ED, and Mcgill Ward was amazing. From the time I called 111 until the time I had a bed in Shawford ward was less than 6 hours. I was discharged on 19th April and all of the time I was in Shawford Ward I felt confident that I was very well cared for by a consultant, registrars, all of the nurses and care staff....you are an amazing team . Heartfelt thanks to you all. Unfortunately I have been home 3 days and now my husband and I have Covid , hope it doesn't set me back too much.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Stephen Johns - Posted on 28 April 2023

Over the past two months I have been treated by the staff of the Opthalmolgy department at the Royal County Hospital Winchester. The treatment that I received was exceptional; all of the team were extremely professional and the skill of my Consultant was simply amazing. Thank you so much. This is the NHS at its very best and we are lucky to have them.

  3. Review titled Our Mum’s care following a stroke

    by septembercr89 - Posted on 20 July 2023

Mum was admitted to Winchester hospital - Twyford ward - following a stoke. We were given various promises about physio and ensuring she could walk, when she was discharged it was apparent this had not been the case. We were told she had capacity and could therefore refuse! We had specifically stated that she could be difficult and were happy to go in and work with the team - we were not asked! We also felt that we were being pushed to have a feedtube in her stomach but choose risk feeding. We felt she was messed around with this too as her water and food levels were changed with no reasons given often putting her backwards. When she was discharged we refused the 8 carers a day and has managed her care successfully on our own. She has physio at home and three weeks later is now able to walk and eat normal meals. We feel very frustrated and let down by the hospital as she could have been so much more independent had she been given the correct care. Since her discharge the support we have received has been far more specific to her needs and the results are showing.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of your mother’s care at our hospital. I am so sorry to hear of your experience. The team on Twyford ward work incredibly hard to provide patient centred care that is specific to each patient, and they would be heartbroken to hear that this had not worked for your mother. Please do contact our PALS and Complaints Team so that we can discuss your concerns further and learn from your experiences to improve care for future patients. Their contact details are: Palsandcomplaints@hhft.nhs.uk telephone number 01256 486766. I do hope you will get in touch. Kind regards Alex Whitfield Chief Executive

  5. Review titled Regular calls from the virtual ward doctors worked well

by AlWoo - Posted on 06 April 2023

I’d tested covid positive on the Monday and on Wednesday my throat had become so sore and restricted that I thought if it got any worse I wouldn’t be able to breathe. My partner drove me into A&E Winchester, where it was very quiet at about 10 am. May have been a strike day. My sats were found to be low so I was put on oxygen, given steroids and antibiotics. After a couple of hours my throat was painless and I could swallow again. The doctors initially said they wanted me to stay overnight, but about 5 pm decided that virtual ward was a possible option, which I preferred anyway as sleep is not easy in hospital on first night. I was given a sats monitor and antibiotics and sent home feeling much better. Progress each day found me out walking on the Friday. Regular calls from the virtual ward doctors worked well.

  6. Review titled The best care and attention

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by John F Holloway - Posted on 08 March 2023

I was having lunch in winchester when I fainted. The restaurant called for an ambulance ...the crew spent a long time checking me and eventually I was taken to a&e where I was checked all over again and I even was seen by a consultant! I was then taken to a 'ward' where more checks were done and eventually released after 6 hours in the a&e. I was most impressed by the care and attention by all your staff. Thank you all....

  8. Review titled Exemplary service in difficult times

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Stuart Ben Hawksworth - Posted on 13 February 2023

Having been admitted on February 3rd through A&E I was admitted to McGill and later Clarke ward. The way I was treated from the point of being picked up by the ambulance from home to my discharge was first class. I was impressed by the fact that the staff were consistently pleasant and helpful whilst being faultlessly efficient. This despite the fact that staffing levels were stretched. The general atmosphere in the hospital was supportive and caring with an underlying sense of professional competence.

  9. Review titled Brilliant support from the virtual ward

    by monoceroszz93 - Posted on 09 March 2023

I was struggling to breathe and called 111 who advised me to head to the A & E in Winchester. Within 10 minutes I had seen a triage nurse and was then moved into the emergency area - put on oxygen- bloods taken and an ecg read out taken. I was then taken for a chest xray and also given a nebuliser. I was then taken to another area to wait for a bed- even though all areas were extremely busy I was treated with courtesy and well informed. Approx 20 hours after arriving I was moved onto Shawford Ward - again all the staff were lovely and answered any questions I had. The next day I was allowed to go home with medications and a promise if support from the Virtual Ward and also that tests would be booked for further investgations at the hospital. What started as a really scary experience for me was reduced by the way all the staff dealt with me -they were all so lovely and it meant that i felt confident to come home as soon as I was allowed with the promise of calls from the virtual ward nurses. They called as promised and I was happy to be signed off after a few catch up calls. Again I was really happy with the support and had a number to call if needed. I have received a letter from the hospital confirming dates for the tests. I don't think anyone likes being or going into hospital but my experience throughout was brilliant and I don't have any negative feedback - the virtual ward as support when I came home was spot on - there if needed but not intrusive. Just want to say a big thank you

  10. Review titled So much compassion

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Amy - Posted on 06 January 2023

I felt compelled to leave a review for an experience that restored my faith in the NHS. Yes, it was clearly busy and there were emergencies happening but everyone from the HCAs to the Consultants were incredibly understanding, empathetic, compassionate and helpful in the time that they were able to provide. I think it's really rare to have a team where everyone who is overworked is able to maintain that high level of professional compassion satisfaction when dealing with someone, that is not as critical as the emergency they have just dealt with. Any buzz for request was responded to with a smile and really prompt action, from an extra blanket to toast. I actually felt spoilt! All the conversations really made me feel supported and ultimately massively helped me feel much better. Having felt really down about this current illness it was really nice to have been cared for by people that did not make me feel like I was a burden in the slightest. What an amazing department.
