  1. Review titled Poor

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I was given an appointment which I need urgently because of rheumatoid related shoulder pain that appears and disappears because the joint itself is permanently damaged. I can not sleep because of it. I received a text reminder from Royal Lancaster Infirmary the night before. On the day of the appointment it was however cancelled by Royal Lancaster Infirmary. A single unanswered call was made to my phone at 8.30 am. When I tried to call the unrecognised number back an automated machine disconnected me from further enquiry. So still none the wiser, I rang Rheumatology bookings waiting an hour or more in a queue being encouraged by automated messages to ring off and discontinue, to be told eventually that my appointment was fine. Minutes later I received a call from bookings apologizing for their error, but that on deeper digging in fact my appointment was cancelled. I asked for the next available appointment but bookings could not do that as it requires access to dates beyond a week or so. Bookings would need to telephone on, to another source, wait for them to call bookings back, then bookings call me back, but if I missed that call I'd be blocked from confirming by the original automated machine. Eventually after chasing bookings I established I am now having to wait in inflammatory pain that is sign of further damage underway to my shoulder, for a further 6 weeks. This has taken therefore several months of NHS telephony ping ponging between themselves in total, with nothing to show. The communication channels are a systematic one way street and the patient is left at the mercy of secondary care monopoly supposedly with the necessary expertise to recognise urgency when there is severe pain. I can not get help from the GP instead. I can not go to A&E instead. The steroid injection I need takes literally 5 minutes of someone's time, neglecting to combat the pain is false economy. It's a dreadful triage system causing unnecessary loss of amenity and pain.

  2. Review titled Suboptimal telephone appointment

Rated 1 star out of 5

I received the telephone appointment on time. Unfortunately it was a complete waste of time both for me and the Doctor. The line was repeatedly cut off, and I was unable to understand what was being said. I gave up trying to understand what was being prescribed or what I should do. If the hospital set up telephone only appointments they need to back it up with I.t. systems that work effectively. It was a totally useless appointment which has left me very unwilling to accept the treatment prescribed because I was unable to have any meaningful communication.

After trying for quite some time to cancel an appointment with the hospital due to my father having been admitted in hospital for a stroke me and my mother gave up phoning the number as all we did was get left on hold for ages so decided to call in at RLi Medical 2 department only to be confronted by a untidy haired man on reception that talked down to and at a point raised his voice to my mother for asking to answer a simple question we didn’t need patronising we just wanted to cancel an appointment so someone else could have it…now won’t bother I’m sorry to say Very disappointed

I could not find the dept I needed on the information boards so I went into the old hospital to see if I could find help. The person who helped with the information I needed was friendly nothing was too much trouble for them( I’m not allowed to use name or gender of this person but they will know who they are Well done

  5. Review titled Big thank you!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Re: Post vascular laser ablation at Chorley Hospital. I can’t thank the Royal Lancaster Infirmary - Same Day Emergency Care Unit - staff enough. I was referred via the 111 service, having attended Morecambe Hospital over a weekend. After a rigorous and prompt examination that included a Doppler scan of a vein that identified a blood clot. The calm, personable and professional care given to me by the doctor was very reassuring, the terminology used was always explained in clear terms. I was given a report of the findings of my blood test, which I went home and learned what the abbreviations meant. Communications continued to be excellent as I have already been contacted by my Doctors’s Practice, and given a review date. The nursing staff were very cheery and reassuring. I valued the hot and cold drinks available and the offer of a sandwich at lunchtime. It is an excellent idea to have the purple floor markings with Same Day Emergency Care Unit in white in the middle, to show the way to unit. A simple idea but effective. I am very appreciative of the care given to me.

  6. Review titled Telephone appointment

Rated 1 star out of 5

I am hard of hearing and find using the telephone difficult because I can't hear what is being said. I have been sent a telephone outpatients appointment. At no stage has anyone ask if I have problems accessing telephone appointments. You would not expect someone who had difficulty walking to climb stairs so why expect people who can't hear to have telephone conversations.

  8. Review titled Awful experience

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 31 January 2024

Initially I called 111 as the NHS recommend, I was told to immediately go to A&E or get an ambulance. While being triaged the nurse did not seem to care about what I was saying, and kept stating she didn't understand why I was there, didn't ask many questions at all about what I was experiencing. I am obviously not a medical professional and so obviously said that I was following 111's directions, but she really didn't seem to care that I had traveled a long way to be here while in severe pain. I got sent away, feeling embarrassed, in even more pain, and not even any advise given. Better communication is needed between 111 and urgent care facilities because being told different things when in need is not on.

I tried to cancel an outpatient appointment at dermatology but kept getting a message service. I left a message 3 times as to why I couldn’t attend . I have now received a letter saying I did no anttend and I did not give a reason why. I have since tried to contact the department on 01524551614 and again getting a ansaphone. In total I have left 4 messages and obviously they have not been read.
