  1. Review titled Feel the support is lacking

by Home Hemodialysis user - Posted on 11 January 2024

I am a home haemodialysis patient under the care of SATH home HD, I have had a few issues with my dialysis machine over the last few months resulting in the renal techs having to attend my property. I had a serious fault on my machine a few days ago and 2 renal techs came out to identify / resolve the issue, I was told the machine was OK and it was completing a heat disinfect program then it would shut down. When I used the machine the next day a button on screen for taking a BP was missing, I reported this to the tech team at SATH and an engineer was booked. I completed my session with no problems and the techs arrived shortly after, 2 techs arrived and they could not access the machine software as their card when inserted in the machine did not register so they had to leave to obtain a working card. When they returned they spent some time trying to resolve and in the end a part was identified as being fitted incorrect inside the machine. A lead was plugged in with 1 pin bent or misaligned, the one tech said what it was and I asked the other if they had unplugged the part on their previous visit, they assured me this part had not been removed or refitted on previous visit, the first tech said it must have been like this since I had the machine yet until the previous visit I had used the BP cuff on the machine pre and post dialysis for over a year and it was not until the previous visit by the tech did it disappear. I found the tech very rude and adamant it could not have worked in its current state and they would not take my point of me actually using it 4 times a week for over a year. I understand the NHS are short staffed and work extremely hard but to behave like that in my home is both offending and insulting. I have refrained from reporting the issue as I am hoping the member of staff was having a bad day, but it will not allow a repeat performance. First bad comment I have had to make about the renal team but I feel it was disgusting behaviour. I need to have confidence in the machine as well as the support network that allows home hemodialysis, I save the NHS a lot of money by dialising at home rather than in hospital treatment, at the moment it feels lacking

  2. Review titled Restorative dentist visit for consultation dissappointment

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Patient advocate - Posted on 05 February 2024

Unfortunately, due to a dentist removing 3 teeth which is severely effecting my life and causing medical issues including nutritional deficiencies from inability to chew my food and pain associated with it, I had to be referred here to see a restorative specialist to get some bridges. However, the restorative dentist refused to do me this bridgework after I put in the effort to come here despite my disability which makes going out difficult and tiring. He blamed me saying I do not clean my teeth which is untrue as I do them twice daily thoroughly to best of my ability as well as going regularly to my dentist. It is actually a hormone drug that I was given for too long to stop my menstruation as a treatment for endometriosis that made my tooth enamel wear down and weaken needing fillings and nothing to do with me not looking after my teeth and these unfounded and deeply personal accusations made me feel really upset and cry. He displayed a lack of compassion or understanding about my situation and had no knowledge of this hormone drug that I was prescribed to put me into a temporary menopause but which I came off for a few years now due to noticing damage to my teeth while taking it. This drug as it is a hormone that effects bones and calcium is known to effect teeth in the way mine have been. I honestly would not have taken it if I had been warned about it by my gynaecologist at another hospital who gave it me but decided myself to come off it to save my teeth as I saw how badly it was damaging them and have never had teeth issues like this before then so know it was this drug and not my brushing. I feel this is just being used as an excuse to deny me any teeth replacements and he is just leaving me without any teeth replacements and one is right in front where people can see it and this is really effecting my quality of life as I cannot eat properly, got vitamin deficiencies from being unable to chew properly, got digestive issues from poor chewing ability, got pain in exposed gums whenever something touches it, teeth have visibly moved due to 5 years of being left without any teeth there allowing them to shift, bite uneven and messed up from teeth shifting into places where teeth are missing which is a well known and common thing that happens after years of leaving them unreplaced, noticeable speech impediment to a point people cannot understand what I am saying which really upsets me, further damage to my adjacent teeth due to missing area making biting and chewing work being taken on more by teeth next to missing teeth wearing them down much faster and chipping them, pain in jaw from having to chew much much harder and difficulties and bad bite from teeth shifting, etc. I really would appreciate and be grateful to be offered these bridges for these 3 missing teeth as it would immensely help me recover my overall quality of life and get my vitamin deficiencies under control as I would be able to chew again like normal. Still suffering.

Following a 111 call I made, I was booked in at the Urgent Treatment Centre at Shrewsbury Hospital. A short wait and I was shown into a clinic and given helpful advice and a prescription to help with my shoulder pain-very helpful and pleasant staff.

  4. Review titled Great patient care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Our visit to Shrewsbury Hospital with my eight-year-old son was incredibly positive. The patient care was exceptional, and the entire staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The doctor took the time and showed great patience in explaining every aspect of my son's care. The level of professionalism and kindness displayed by the staff made a potentially stressful situation much more manageable. Kudos to the outstanding team at Shrewsbury Hospital for their exceptional service.

  5. Review titled Great service in Same Day Emergency Care

Rated 4 stars out of 5

My Dad presented to utc yesterday referred to sdec for further assessment. Grateful to all the staff for their kindness and good care. Both Mum and Dad were given sandwiches and coffee. Dad was throughly investigated. The staff went the extra mile to hand over to Dad's local hospital for further tests on Monday rather than them having to make the 2 hour trip back. Thanks to all the staff. You're doing a great job in difficult times in the face of overwhelming demands.

Appointment offered at very short notice - 4 days. Treatment Centre is a brilliant facility. Lovely Staff (Hospital Team and the 18 Weeks Support Team). Very professional, polite and chatty; keeping me informed of everything as it happened. Cannot fault the NHS. Thankfully I have nothing wrong with me.

  7. Review titled Hours arranged for staff, not patients

Rated 1 star out of 5

Emergency referral for a detached retina. Only two on-call surgeons and both were on holiday. Had to travel to Birmingham for operation (a different Trust and 70 miles from home). Operation seems to be successful (well done surgical team in Birmingham). To reduce travel, I asked for two-week follow-up to be in Shrewsbury. I checked this at the beginning of the week and the nurse I spoke to told me an appointment would come by post. As no appointment had come by end of the week I phoned again. I was in a telephone queue for an hour. Eye clinic said I needed to talk to Booking team. Booking Team said there was no appointment as they had not received a referral, and I should contact the other hospital. However, there was no-one available in Birmingham to talk to as they seem to finish at 3:00 on a Friday. As nobody could help, and as a last resort I phone the eye clinic again as the nurse has suggested. However, they too had gone home for the weekend too (about 3:30)

  8. Review titled Amazing staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Kate Snooke - Posted on 10 September 2023

Absolutely amazing care from every single staff member we emcountered - from ambulance crews through to all staff on ward & consultants. We have spent a long weekend at the hospital where my elderly 91 year old father has been cared for following surgery there then being readmitted following complications. I cannot thank these people enough - their care, patience, support & treatment has been outstanding throughout. They are doing an incredible job under enormous pressure, serious underfunding & limited resources. We should be thanking & applauding every single one of these amazing people.

  9. Review titled Great Service, with compassionate staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My daughter broke the metatarsal in her foot. See was seen by a nurse within 10 minutes of arrival and had been x-rayed within half an hour. She was then promptly fitted with a stabilising boot and given crutches, and an appointment was made for her to attend the fracture clinic the next day. Wonderful service, with very caring staff
