  1. Review titled Rude staff and no competence

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 28 December 2023

My husband is currently waiting has been hous and nothing but a paracetamol for his pain until now. Nurses were rude all the time and when trying to get blood for exams, they just couldn't find a vein and then gave up from trying- which means that my husband is not having exams done because of their imcompetence. I also had terrible experience when my daughter was in their care a few months ago. Nurses also terribly rude and telling me wrong information about how to care of my daughter and pre exam info too. Wards were dirty, nurses were laud all day and night, where babies and children were sleeping. Dorctors were good.

Dear Anonymous, I am sorry to read of your recent negative experiences whilst your family members were seeking treatment. Our A&E departments have been very pressured for some months now and staff have been working hard to treat and care for patients safely. I will share your feedback for both visits with the relevant teams so they can look into this further and make improvements. Kind regards, Richard Beeken.

  2. Review titled Caring staff

Fell backwards down stairs suffering head trauma requiring CT scan and x-rays then lacerations needing multiple stitches. All staff from paramedics to ladies serving meals were kind and caring. Thank you all for helping my recovery. A salary increase is certainly needed.

  3. Review titled A recent accident

    by Sally0976 - Posted on 11 September 2023

I broke my hip in the middle of August following a tumble at home. The wonderful paramedics were with me within 20 minutes. I was taken to Sandwell General Hospital, Just a short wait in the ambulance and then into A & E. tests, xrays scans completed and I was admitted on to Newton ward early next morning. Operation the next day. I have to say that the care and nursing I was shown was outstanding, as it was when I was moved to Lyndon ward. I was discharged and before I arrived home a complete care package was in place. Well done to all hospital staff, and ancillary services,

  4. Review titled What a dump!

Rated 3 stars out of 5

I took my son for a physiotherapy consultation. Lovely staff but the hospital, from walking into outpatients to walking down the scruffy run down corridors to paediatric physiotherapy was so depressing. The place is shabby, run down and drab, to the point of it actually looking dirty. A very unpleasant and scruffy place to be but I was happy with the service we received.

Dear Anonymous, We are pleased to hear that your son received great care from the staff whilst visiting our paediatric department. Thank you for raising your concerns regarding the building. We are aware that our estate is very old but our staff are able to give high quality care and when we move into our new hospital, The Midland Met, we will ensure this continues in a brand new state of the art building. Kind regards, Richard Beeken, Chief Executive

  5. Review titled Terrible

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Mandy - Posted on 07 June 2023

Went to city road Accident and emergency after phoning 111 . With breathlessness and fainting coming on suddenly. I was advised not to drive but drove anyway as I live alone and had no one to help me . The hospital was full of people waiting although I was seen initially that was it . 3 hours I waited I was exhausted from what occurred and it was too long to wait . My ecg was fine and I wanted to go home . The lady at the computer was rude when I said I wanted to go home not caring at all about having to wait so long . I decided if I die I’ll die at home if it happens again . Terrible experience still don’t know what happened to me . I’m going to leave it as hospital does not help with the long waits and uncaring attitude . Not phoning them again I’d rather die

Dear Mandy, I am sorry to read about your recent experience at City Hospital’s accident and emergency department. This is not the kind of experience we would expect you to have from our staff and I will ensure that your feedback is passed onto the manager for the department. It’s really important to either visit A&E or call 999 if you have an emergency which requires immediate attention so that you receive the medical attention needed. Kind regards, Daren Fradgley, Deputy Chief Executive.

  6. Review titled Unprofessional Staff

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Aaron Martyn Elvis Jones - Posted on 12 May 2023

My wife was sent to Sandwell Accident & Emergency yesterday by her g.p. and was initially seen relatively quickly (though I stress 'relatively') and diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, she was then sent around to the Urgent Treatment Centre for a prescription and discharge. In the Urgent Treatment Centre the doctor had further concerns, however, since the Urgent Treatment Centre was approaching its closing time, my wife was sent back to Accident & Emergency. My wife was triaged again by a nurse who appeared to feel unheard ('I think it's Bell's Palsy, but I'm not the expert' and 'The g.p.s have got to stop sending people to Accident and Emergency Covid's over'). When my wife was seen by the Doctor, she was referred for a c.t scan. When we were sent to the waiting area for the c.t. scan, we could overhear the staff complaints about other wards, that a&e was terrible and that everyone who was approved before 20:30 had to be approved again. We then had an extremely long wait to see the doctor after the scan (approximately 2hrs); the one bright spot in the whole experience was a specialist stroke nurse, who took time to reassure my wife and let her know when the results were clear. The worse part of the experience was at 23:30 approx. after my wife had been there since 16:00; I asked the receptionist if there was anyone I could speak with who could give me an idea of how long we would have to wait. The Receptionist directed me to a door and told me to ask a nurse. Initially there wasn't a nurse there, however, one came in who completely ignored me. I realise staff have to be focussed on their patients, however, is it too much to ask that they acknowledge people? Even if it just to say 'Sorry, I can't help you now?' In total my wife was at the hospital from 16:00 to 23:45; I'm not entirely complaining about the length of time, I know the National Health Service is overstretched and under resourced, but, I do feel the majority of the staff we met were unprofessional in their manner and showed little interest in hiding any personal frustrations; they showed even less interest in acknowledging anyone not in their immediate sphere of interest. My personal rating of your Key Lines of Enquiry would be: Is it safe: adequate (I am glad my wife was thoroughly examined), Is it effective: inadequate (it might meet needs, but, not in a timely manner, Is it caring: Poor (you are not acknowledged if you aren't in the immediate sphere), Is it responsive: Poor (everything seems to be designed around staff needs), Is it well-lead: Poor (such unprofessional behaviour would not be tolerated in a well-lead organisation).

  7. Review titled Awful treatment

Rated 1 star out of 5

Having an elderly parent in hospital can be stressful enough. Add in the total lack of care, respect and dignity that, that person is shown is intolerable. The extremely brusque attitude of multiple staff on Lydon 5 & seemingly uncaring nature does not give any amount of confidence that your parent is being cared for. Unattended bay with several confused patients that are relying on other people's relatives to ensure that they don't have a fallout of bed or are not lying in faecal matter for 20 + minutes at a time (witnessed first hand) is completely unacceptable. When calling for assistance with either ones own relative or for another patient to be meet with arguments between staff as to who is going to help! Finding a parent in bed at 11am who has not been given breakfast or a hot drink is distressing and hearing that the HCA had 2 other people on that bay to feed and so your parent went without is wholy unacceptable. People do not recover without good nutrition and the right care. It appears this ward is a dumping ground for patients who seemingly the hospital does not know what to do with and likewise staff who wouldn't last 5 minutes on an efficiently run ward such as Priory 4, where the patient was moved from. Add into this the stark difference in cleanliness from one floor to another, you'd think you were in a different place altogether. Seriously Sandwell get your act together and sort out Floor 5, your staff and the equipment graveyard which appears on the majority of corridors.

I’m very sorry to hear about the poor level of care your parent has experienced on Lyndon 5. This is not the standard of care we would expect our patients to have and would like to investigate your concerns immediately. Please contact the Communications Department via email at swbh.comms@nhs.net so they are able to look into this further. With kind regards, Richard Beeken, Chief Executive.

  8. Review titled Very Attentive.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Christine Soares - Posted on 02 June 2023

I suspected I had a broken rib from a backward fall down a step and after 4 days felt even worse. Due to an ongoing medical condition I was concerned. I was there 5 hours. They were not busy when I arrived but it did get quite a few more patients as lunchtime approached. However when I saw the 'on duty' doctor I was informed by him that he had read my notes so was concerned and asked me many questions. He was very kind and thorough. He wanted me to have Xrays so I did and waited for the results. Really happy to be told that nothing showed up to worry about. and if anything else cropped up to go back to them. I cant speak highly enough regarding their care so big thank you to them all especially the lovely Doctor.

I wanted to thank all the nurses and doctors in A&E on Friday 31st jan who helped my mother in law who came in with a head injury, but it was identified very quickly she had a heart condition, I felt that she was monitored and informed continously whilst she was in A&E even though the services are stretched an excellent service was provided by all staff, her maintained a cheery happy spirit whilst undertaking patients with tricky conditions

  10. Review titled The wonderful care received by my elderly parents

    by Kent62 - Posted on 04 January 2023

My mother and father are 86 and 87 respectfully. At the end of November my father collapsed taking my mother with him. They were both taken by ambulance to Birmingham City Hospital, Dudley Road. My mother was treated in A&E for a fractured wrist and head injury and discharged home. My father was admitted and in hospital for 10 days. Subsequently he was admitted overnight to Sandwell Hospital for a different condition. I would like to thank the many staff who looked after both of them. Their caring and kindness during a period of high pressure in the NHS was exceptional. [Very happy with 'Staff attitude']
