Review titled Prostate Diagnosis and Treatment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Dave Spicer - Posted on 21 July 2024
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in late February 2024. I was referred to Southend Hospital Urology department for further treatment. All of the staff that I met on my journey through from diagnosis, surgery and recovery were amazing. I was treated with respect, professionalism and sympathetically throughout my treatment. All of my concerns and questions were answered honestly by all of the various departments that I encountered. My surgery was carried out by one of the consultants at the hospital. I had appointments with the consultant who again explained very clearly my condition and the various treatments that were available, the choice of which was up to me to decide which I thought was most suitable. I chose to have the full Prostectomy surgery option, again this was explained to me in full detail to confirm my understanding of the procedure and likely outcome. My experience on the day of the surgery in the Elective surgery suite was very calm and reassuring, my surgical procedure was explained to me again and the team there answered some more questions that I had. After surgery I was admitted on to the Princesss Ann ward. They looked after me amazingly well and ensured I was comfortable at all times. On my release from the ward I was handed over the Southend Urology Clinical Nurse Specialists Enhanced Recovery Team who were absolutely brilliant they continued to provide full support in person and via phone if I had any concerns or questions. I first met this team early on in my diagnosis, they really had the gritty job of filling in the gaps about what to expect after surgery. They handled this very well and even adding some humour into their presentation, which really helped. After my surgery I was contacted on a weekly basis by this team to confirm/discuss any after surgery issues, and even now if I need anything I only need to give them a call. Every department that I went through deserves my sincere thanks and appreciation for all of their excellent work and total commitment. However this Enhanced Recovery Team just gets the edge on their help and support. Being diagnosed with any form of cancer is extremly worrying for both the patient and family, however I can only say a big Thank You to the whole Urology Team at Southend Hospital for their excellent treatment. I can provide names of the people who I think went the extra mile, however for this review providing names is not permitted.

Review titled GP service at A&E
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Bad back - Posted on 08 June 2024
I have a physical job and injured my back was barley able to move I phoned my normal GP to make an appointment I haven’t been since 2002 and was told 2 weeks wait, I was not able to wait the 2 weeks duration with my pain So I visited the A&E center. Which was well organised and was assessed almost immediately I was sent to the GP department. The ladies at the desk were very pleasant I had to wait which was understandable, while waiting it’s was raining quite heavy and some older guy came in and had taken the wrong route they explained where he had to go which seemed quite a walk for this gent, the lady said but your not going that way in this and took him the inside route. Which was nice to witness. I saw the DR I can’t remember her name but she was absolutely brilliant so caring and genuine. My experience made me wonder what was the point of local GP’s but this sort of thing put even more unnecessary strain on A&E who really do their best to help people. Would especially like to thank the DR who I saw she also had to break the news to another gent in a wheelchair waiting for a bed and went outside in the pouring rain to explain and talk with him amazing what I witnessed this lady deserves a medal thank you

Review titled Help when I needed it
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by An old bat (young in heart) - Posted on 14 May 2024
Everyone helped to have me checked over, as I had a fall as I arrived, in Southend as I put my hands in front of my face, as I did not want to smash onto the pavement, when I felt myself falling over. Went to Southend A&E, who were extremely helpful, all staff were friendly and helpful, they checked everthing> I had Head scan& arm scanned. Thankfully nothing broken, all staff were so helpful and careful. Thank you all

Review titled Dreadful experience
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 16 May 2024
Had to attend southend a&e. Terrible triage system with obviously very poorly patients waiting for ages to get past first hurdle. People openly vomiting in the waiting room. Surely there could be somewhere more private for them. The rudest most unwelcoming booking in staff. The only thing I could praise was the lovely doctor.

Review titled Reassuring, friendly, comforting and good service
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was taken to hospital for an appendicitis. I was expedited straight to the surgical assessment unit (sau) by my local GP and was admitted. From the moment I arrived every single person was friendly, helpful and comforting. The consultant and registrar were again very reassuring and personal too. Despite a number of emergencies delaying my op, the registrar still managed to get me into theatre and everything went well. I cannot compliment the level of competence, attitude and kindness of all staff from the ward hosts, nurses, all the way up to the consultants and anaesthetists. It was my first operation and they made me feel safe and comfortable. Thank you to everyone there.

Review titled Full of praise for the service and attention
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Karen and Muriel - Posted on 11 April 2024
My mother was 5 days in Hockley Ward, after 1 day in AMU ward, and, yes, a 12 hour wait in A&E, but we were delighted with the care and attention given in all 3 sections of the hospital. I know many people have bad experiences with the NHS, but in our case, the staff were very friendly and attentive, caring, scrupulous regarding possibility of infection, helpful and patient, even with long shifts. Even the food was good! A bit bland maybe, but she could season to her taste. In all, she, my father and I cannot fault how she was treated during her time in the hospital. I hope this review reaches the staff concerned, so they can see their work is much appreciated. Thank you for everything.

Review titled Excellent experience
Rated 5 stars out of 5

My daughter was recently admitted with flare up of ulcerative colitis (2nd time) and had again excellent care and treatment. Nursing staff so kind and caring and understanding of her frustration about being in hospital as a young person who was due to go on holiday. Treatment plan fully explained from attending A and E and being admitted. Allowed volunteer with therapy dog for a visit to her room which really cheered her up. Both myself and my daughter have had a few admissions over the last few years and i cannot fault the hospital. They are efficient, patient focused, and there is such a sense of care and understanding for the individual which goes a long way to reassuring people at their most vulnerable. I work as a volunteer for the hospital myself and proud and privileged to be a part of it. My sincere thanks and respect for all of the doctors, nurses and other staff. Lucky to have such an excellent hospital on our doorstep.
