Review titled Terrible female GP
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Elizabeth Walker - Posted on 25 March 2024
She gave me the most painful internal examination on a dirty bed had old screwed up paper on it. She didn't use any kind of jelly on speculum and rammed it in as hard as she could. I had been sent by 111 doctor to get an ultrasound this didn't happen. She rang gynaecology and was told to take swab she refused and told me to see gp on Monday!

Review titled A & E Southend
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Steve R - Posted on 05 April 2024
Had to visit on Good Friday evening to see A&E about a terrible pain in my calf. The whole team on the evening were great I was seen quickly, from the cleaner, the triage Nurse, the admin and the GP they were all great and I was very pleased with their help. I am however awaiting a follow up ultrasound appointment but have not heard anything.

Review titled I felt unsafe

The following relates to a scan that I received at Southend Hospital. I understand these are conducted by Alliance Medical, who describe themselves as "a trusted and sustainable partner to the NHS. When one of the people who is going to be working on you experiences what I can only describe as a sudden change in mood and begins talking to themselves under their breath it hardly inspires confidence. Overall, staff were very friendly, but actual communication was poor; at times critical; and at other times offhand to a point where I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing. At one point during the treatment I heard nothing for so long, I began to think about how I might extract myself from the machine. Disparaging remarks were made regarding one of the symptoms of the illness that I am being treated for. I don't think there was any malice behind it - more a lack of empathy and bedside manner. I left not feeling terribly good about myself. I felt coerced into providing an email address. I was asked to provide details about myself that I did not know but was told to estimate. The venue where the procedure took place was unfit for purpose, with diagnostics and patient areas occupying the same cramped space. There was no privacy. As I exited the scanning room I found myself literarily face to face with the patient who was coming in after me. They looked as confused as I did. Based on my experiences even before the scan had started, I think that, had this been a more invasive procedure, I would have made my excuses and left. While I am no position to judge the professionalism of the staff in regards to conducting the actual scan, purely on a surface level, there is a jarring disconnect in standards between this unit and the surrounding hospital. As a patient I found the experience upsetting and disconcerting. As someone who has worked in healthcare regulation, I found what I saw concerning and perhaps indicative of more serious problems within the service.

Review titled Thank you
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I attended A & E on the 11th March because I woke up in severe pain. On arrival the machine started to work: blood test, ECG, urine test, blood pressure, temperature. I then waited to see the doctor, no point seeing him immediately as he has to wait for the results. The doctor was amusing, friendly and explained what he thought the issue was and then prescribed pain relief - he said these are magic with a massive smile, he was not wrong! I then went for a CT scan and waited for the result and the doctor explained the issue (kidney stone). He explained that the file has been sent to the Urology dept for specialist advise. I was feeling a bit low at this point and a man walked in offering drinks and biscuits - he had the broadest smile and sat next to me for a couple of minutes discussing which biscuits he thought were best. What an amazing man! I struggle to get to the toilet and a cleaner offered me some help - amazing. Of course the Urology dept has its everyday patients and in addition A & E work. The wait was about 2 hours - I don't think that was to long. Everyone looked overworked, the work is relentless, it never stopped just watching the volume of patients was a surprise. I saw nothing but kindness and felt nothing but empathy from a brigade of people that sometime feels undervalued and overworked. I watched a senior nurse trying to arrange transport for a patient and the carer. She looked utterly exasperated and then turned to the patient and kindly explained the situation. My experience was beyond my expectations and I only hope that you manage to pass on my thanks to everyone who was working on the 11th of March. Perhaps - the cleaner thinks 'I'm only a cleaner' and the biscuit man: 'I only give out biscuits' you are wrong! You both made a difference to me.

Review titled Frustrated
Rated 3 stars out of 5

w: I came to the hospital in January for an X-ray which identified an undisplaced radial head fracture. The service at this time was excellent! I was given a follow up appointment for Thursday 15th Feb. I have spent 2 days, using various extensions, names, departments, trying to cancel this appointment. It always ended the same way, even after speaking to appointments, with a phone ringing until I was cut off. I will not be attending my appointment on Thursday and have left a message on an answerphone to this effect but don’t know if the message has even gone to the correct person! How can the hospital complain about missed appointments when it is such a nightmare trying to cancel one!

Review titled Excellent service

Went to a&e and was seen very quickly and although I was there for a couple hours I had all the tests done and was constantly reassured by the HCA’s, nurses and doctors throughout my wait time and even during when I was seen to. Every one was so kind towards me and I was throughouly checked out by all the individuals involved and they do not get enough credit. I think it is a disgrace they have cut staff all across the board and these poor individuals are working so hard with what they have. I think what they’re doing to the trust is disgusting and a disgrace and I hope these individuals who are actually working on the floor know how much they are appreciated by the public because without them we would have nothing. Stop the pen pushers because it’s the staff who work on the floor and the patients who suffer at the end of it all

I called several times this afternoon 4pm Thurs 15th Feb, actually four and on three occasions my call to the Ophthalmology dept admissions was disconnected, i.e someone lifted the receiver and put the phone down on me. The forth occassion I went via the main switchboard to "god knows where' and left a menage on an answer machine. Yours hopefully for a call back please!

I needed to try to get in touch with the Urology department. I could not for the life of me, find a extention number for Urology anywhere on the hospitals site! Also switchboard is now when you ring is a robot and not an actual robot and get the word mixed up everything you ring!
