Review titled Made each day a little brighter for my mum
by Bromley cancer story - Posted on 15 June 2023
Mum passed away peacefully in front of family at home recently, after her 4-year ovarian cancer battle. She was under the care of some wonderful NHS teams. Her GP surgery for initial diagnosis and support and care throughout, the Guy's Cancer Centre team in SE1 for her cancer treatment care, with surgical care at St. Thomas's Hospital. She had over 22 sessions of chemotherapy and maintenance medications. In the 48 months of her care, we were very grateful for the NHS, as they provided the best care we possibly ask for. The GP helped her be referred to St. Christopher's Hospice for end-of-life care, and along with daily visits from the wonderful Bromley Healthcare team for injections, we helped manage her symptoms and to help her stay as active and mobile as we could. The day a sleek black wheelchair arrived she was very impressed and in turn, it led to a few memorable shopping trips to the local garden centre to stock up summer plants for the garden! Cancer is a nasty master indeed and she did feel very angry that it had robbed her of time with family and to do things in her beloved garden and sewing. She hated the way she was dying but had dignity and courage until the very end. As a family, we are in awe of all the wonderful and passionate people that came into Mum's life and made each day a little brighter for her.

Review titled You need to be patient centric
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Manju Saranya Balan - Posted on 02 March 2023
The administrator at the register/check in desk was so rude, she was yelling at me because i didnt hear her. A very busy A&E with radio screaming, a patient in pain is very much possible if she calls from her desk, the patient may not hear. Secondly, The A&E toilets 2 of 3 are clogged. Then I was directed to staff toilet which was clogged. Finally went to a very posh toilet close to governors hall with an abdominal pain. Instead of advertising about your hair salon in the toilet, may be look at fixing the clogged toilets. The doctor who saw me couldnt make a diagnosis and after waiting for appx 6 hrs left with a discharge note that said meet your GP. The reasons she gave for not referring me to a scan inspite of knowing my history seemed like they dont care. Overall, I went to the A&E with pain and came back with pain with added mental stress.

Review titled Disgusting
Rated 1 star out of 5

Recently had to have cancer surgery - amputation. Dim and dreary unit. One of the nursing staff didn’t seem to have basic reading/writing skills when attempting to take my details. When I thought my details were taken, I explained it would be difficult to get home on the same day. This was ignored. Prior to surgery, I was frogmarched and made to a phone the person who I had stated was my next of kin. I was then told to ask them to call for me later that day. I had not been told previously about any aftercare plan and (due to severity of operation) thought I might be kept in overnight. After surgery, when my elderly next of kin arrived, I was promptly ejected without any kind of walking aid, transport or offer of overnight accommodation. I will always remember the excruciating pain I endured, having to struggle to move to get my way to Waterloo Station. It was rush hour and I had to stand on the train. The pain was unbearable; burning and gnawing at the amputation site. Despite being given paracetamol and codeine the pain the next day made me scream and cry. Calling the hospital I was advised to “call 911” which shows you the minimal knowledge of the staff there, obviously gained from American television shows. How a hospital could treat patients like this beggars belief. Disgusting lack of care, knowledge of their own processes or consideration for others, which results in endangerment to patients’ health. Avoid.

Review titled Excellent care from beginning to end
Rated 5 stars out of 5

My mother was recently treated at St Thomas' having a TAVI heart valve replacement. Every part of the process was dealt with professionaly and efficiently. There were no queues or delaying in getting scans, blood tests etc and everything ran remarkably smoothly. Doctors and Nurses involved kept my mother up to date with what was happening at every stage of her care. On a more personal level all the staff (including non medical) were very friendly and personable.

Review titled Waiting time
Rated 1 star out of 5

I was there for an overnight observation. The doctor told me at 10:30h that I will be discharged around 12h. I had to wait 8 hours for the discharged paper and the medication. I never seen so much wait for something that usually take 20 mn. There is clearly no communication inside the service. You need to treat people with respect and as patient. Not numbers

Review titled Wonderful support from the midwives at St Thomas's
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sian - Posted on 15 February 2023
I gave birth to my daughter in December in the St Thomas's Home from Home Birth Centre. The care I had from the midwives from my very first appointment until she was born was excellent; I not only felt cared for but empowered to make my own choices and to do the right thing for my baby and for me. The facilities at St Thomas's were excellent and my husband and I felt very comfortable and safe the whole time we were in hospital. The birth of my daughter was an empowering, beautiful experience and I credit a lot of that to the superb care I had at St Thomas's and especially from the community midwife I saw in the run up to the birth and the two midwives who assisted my delivery. I cannot thank you enough.

Visited A&E with my partner who had fallen and hurt his hand 2 days prior.. We were set for a 6 hour wait at least. We arrived at 11:30am, and it looked pretty busy.! However I have to say we were in and out within an hour and half which is amazing!! We checked in, was triaged, x-rayed and hand in plaster, injection, advice and done in this short time!! Everyone was lovely, caring and so so efficient, thank you from us 2 Northern visitors.

I choose st thomas's as my chosen hospital to have my antenatal care there after I have had some recommendations from other people. My first midwife appointment was on the 20th december 2022 and I was shocked when I got called in the midwife who saw us had such a basic english that she was asking us how to spell certain words when she was making notes. It was shocking. that didn't give a reassurance at all that I trust this hospital in any way. after that I have had several other appointments which I should say went ok. but my God thank goodness we are relocating from the uk and i don't need to give birth in this hospital because gives me shivers and massive anxiety.
