Review titled First class speedy treatment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by John Barber - Posted on 07 August 2023
I suffered an amaurosis fugax involving my Right eye. I came to the AandE dept at the Great Western Hospital and had an urgent referral for a carotid duplex which revealed a severe internal carotid stenosis. This was rapidly followed by a telephone consultation the next day wirh one of the consultant neurologists who said I needed an urgent surgical referral. I asked to be referred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford as I had previously had a Left Atrial abberant pathway ablated there. This was agreed and within a week I saw a vascular surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital and a week later I underwent a sucessful Right internal carotid endarterectomy under local anaesthesia. I am now recovering at home. Basically, I am saying I had wonderful assistance all along the line from amazingly competent medical practitioners who between them appear to have saved me from a major stroke or even death and I cannot thank them enough for the highest standard of care. All those involved along the line, medical, nursing and ancillary were most professional and gave me an amazing standard of care. Thank you!

After waiting over 5 months for an appointment was sent to bath, amazing hospital, then given an appointment to receive my results, this was cancelled but I was not informed of this called the GWH and was unable to get anyone to answer the phone so called the secretary and was told (by pre recorded message) it would take 5 working days for a reply which never happened. This hospital is a total joke

as per title and 586 days waiting for an appointment, this is a complete joke, you destroy peoples heath with what you call "service". What is the point you actually exist??? I pay nearly £300 monthy on NHS from my slary and get nothing for this money. Going abroad to see normal doctors within reasonable time!

Review titled Brilliant Diagnosis and Treatment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Rangila Roy - Posted on 23 July 2023
Hello, I am leaving this review for my husband who was admitted in the GWH from 25Apr to 5May 2023 for an abdominal pain. The pain was taken care immediately followed by a series of tests, X-Ray, scans in the next few days to figure out the root cause of the problem. Then on 9May2023, a stone was removed successfully from bile duct with Endoscopy. I am happy and thankful for the help and treatment that my husband has received from the Hospital. Kind Regards. Referred to cardiology and given a date of 25/12/24 Pathetic excuse to say I have an appointment so I don’t become a ‘waiting appointment statistic’. No alternative given such as John Radcliffe or Cirencester. Extremely poor management by Great Western Hospital in my honest opinion

When referred into the department by your GP your referral is reviewed and triaged by a Consultant Cardiologist. Your referral is then added to the Patient Tracking List (PTL) where appointments are booked against the triaged clinical priority and then chronologically against the date your referral was receipted into the Hospital. There is then a set process that your referral goes through as it sits within our wait list which involves a “holding” appointment that you have mentioned (25/12/24). This wait list is visible to all internal and external organisations who manage and monitor wait lists. We are doing all we can to get patients seen as quickly as we can within our available capacity. If you wish to know in more detail about your specific circumstances, please contact PALS for further advice.

My 91 year-old father is being looked after here following a night time fall where he broke his hip. The staff are being wonderful and the level of care and attention is superlative. My family is so grateful.

Review titled Fabulous care and professionalism. Thank you
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mary M - Posted on 01 May 2023
I went into the GWH for total hip replacement on 28th April. Right from the start every member of staff I had contact with showed concern, kindness, consideration, and exceptional professionalism. I felt listened to throughout the whole process and, although I had one or two minor blips along the way with my health, blood pressure, anxiety etc, the staff were knowledgeable in their fields and able to deal with my problems swiftly, compassionately, confidently and efficiently. The nurses even helped me with my confidence doing a tiny celebration jig when I achieved a goal, and my carer cleaned up my sick in the busy x-ray department leaving me feeling dignified and cared about - very horrible for him though and all in front of the other people waiting (who were also superb). He was very quick and efficient, sparing me any embarrassment I might have felt otherwise. The physiotherapists and all staff worked diligently for me, and when I left hospital I felt that I would be able to manage with the clear and comprehensive advice and equipment I had been given. The food was really nice, especially the lentil and tomato soup. And the carers left everything clean, tidy and hygenic. One carer offered me hot water for my tea bags as she noticed I do not drink ordinary tea - she will recognise herself if she reads this - she helped help me stay feeling understood and cared for - thank you so much! Throughout my hospital stay I felt confident that someone would come if I called, and confident of the staffs expertise. I felt the care I received was fantastic and that I was monitored thoroughly throughout. A huge thank you to everyone who was involved with my surgery, anaesthetic, and recovery. They will know that I am a very anxious patient and I become easily overwhelmed, so I feel they did a fabulous job under difficult circumstances. I hope my recovery at home now continues smoothly after your excellent care in the GWH. Thank you all again!

Review titled Lovely staff and a caring environment
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Heather Bruce nee McRoberts - Posted on 16 May 2023
I just want to say a huge thank you to all of the staff who looked after my father when he was rushed into your care. ITU, haematology, and the Dove unit fully surpassed our expectations. Everyone was very caring and sensitive to our needs. Our family appreciate it greatly. Although the outcome was sad and unexpected, we know that you all did your best to find out what was wrong with him. Despite junior doctor strikes and Easter, we felt you worked tirelessly. He turned out to have a rare blood cancer, Burkitts Lymphoma, which had been very difficult to detect until a bone marrow aspiration had been taken. By which time, it was too late. So, thank you again. You have a lovely, clean hospital, with very caring staff; we couldn't have asked for a better environment.
