  1. Review titled Great care in all respects

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Tim Hailstone - Posted on 03 December 2023

On 9th November 2023 I discovered, while checking my blood pressure at home, that my pulse was fast and irregular. The following day, my GP provisionally diagnosed atrial fibrillation and sent me to the Cardiac Care Unit at Torbay Hospital. I was there for 24 hours. During that period I was investigate and diagnosed definitively, and was discharged with treatment and a follow-up plan. Everthing was explained to me clearly and sensitively. I was treated with efficiency and kindness throughout. I ma grateful to all those involved.

  2. Review titled Great practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Graham John May - Posted on 20 December 2023

On 23 November 2023 I had the above surgery at your Hospital. I would like to thank the Orthopaedic Surgeon and his Team for the excellent attention in carrying out the marathon of a double shoulder removal. While the procedure took 9 hours and the Team maintained their concentration I thankfully, slept through it all. After surgery I spent some time on ICU where I enjoyed the attention of a dedicated nursing team. I was impressed by their professionalism and their support for each other. On one occasion when a nurse requested a change of shift at least 3 others volunteered their services. I was then moved to Ainslie Ward and found the same co-operation between the staff. The Physiotherapist noticed a small swelling and immediately brought it to the attention of the Duty Doctor who diagnosed a damaged tendon which did not require any action, however, should it have been a damaged muscle his prompt action could have prevented a more serious condition. All staff engaged with me, rather than just talking to me. I was comforted by the fact that this engagement made me feel that I was being treated as a person and not just a patient. I suspect that this treatment cannot be measured and therefore not become a performance target, however, being treated in this manner was a factor in my recovery. Please extend my grateful thanks to the staff involved with my care. Finally, the catering was the best I have ever experienced in an NHS hospital. Several of the meals I would have been pleased to have in a good restaurant. Yours sincerely Graham J May

  4. Review titled excellent practice

I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and thanks for the legendary service, I received during my recent attendance at Torbay Hospital. In addition to the excellent professional skill and dedication, I am amazed at how the staff who were under constant pressure, had time with a smiling face, to give assurance and confidence, on a one-to-one basis to all their patients, thus making them feel that they were important and well-cared for-in addition explaining the medical processes and medication. I would strongly assess from what I have experienced, this hospital with a five-star rating with five-star rated staff. I am indebted to Torbay Hospital and its staff. It is impossible to better excellence, which has been my experience.

  5. Review titled Caring Staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I have had two small operations under general anaesthetic. In the Day Surgery unit. It was like a hotel as the staff treated me as important. I’m not the best patient as pretty scared of operations, never having been in hospital until my late 70’s. My Consultant gave me the courage to go through with it and I consider him to be almost a friend. I also had two small moles removed in the John Parkes unit In December. This was by local anaesthetic. Not had one before. The Dr and health care assistant were overly nice. It went well and I am recovering. I now have no fear of hospital and almost look forward to going! Obviously that can change if have serious illness. But so far I have no complaints. I try to take chocolates/sweets/biscuits as a small thank you. I decided to remain anonymous.

  8. Review titled Outstanding care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Makayla Hall - Posted on 04 November 2023

I have recently given birth to my beautiful baby at Torbay hospital in the womens health clinic department. The journey was challenging and I was a patient anyone would have dreaded to have due to having seizures, complications and being at high risk. The care I received from everyone at the Torbay team on John Mac, delivery and SCBU was sensational. We had a scary experience and the team remained calm, worked together amazingly and supported my husband and I through a very traumatic emotional time. With all their great efforts our beautiful girl was born and transferred to SCBU for extra support, she made a speedy recovery and they delivered my baby safely to me. I was well supported cared for and surrounded by highly experienced health professionals, each one of their roles were amazing. Thank you NHS for delivering our precious cargo and providing outstanding care. I wish I could thank you even more than just a review! Please share our appreciation to all of your phenomenal staff at SCBU, John Mac and the delivery suite. All our love, Kyle, Makayla and baby Darcy Hall

  9. Review titled Supportive, efficient & caring staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 October 2023

I was booked in for day surgery after attending an appointment at Gynaecology. It was super efficient, had all my booking details taken in advance as well seeing the anaesthetist in advance so I was dealt with as soon as possible the following day for surgery. I was incredibly anxious and even though the circumstance of the procedure wasn’t a positive one, the hospital team and the staff at the Day Surgery unit as well as within Gynaecology were absolutely incredible & I couldn’t have been more taken care of. I was really put at ease, any questions I had were answered and they really made me feel so comforted and just made the experience a really pleasant one considering. I really just want to thank each and every one of them who were there for me. They were so incredibly busy with other patients but still made sure they were able to care for me and others. Huge appreciation and gratitude to them. The hospital was so clean too, and everything went well. Thank you again!

  10. Review titled Fantastic Support

Rated 4 stars out of 5

    by S Niles - Posted on 27 October 2023

my son was injured in a rugby match on wednesday 4th october approx 4pm, shoulder and concussion. We came into A&e where he was observed for the concussion, xrayed for the shoulder. After 4 hours, there were concerns my sons pupils were not the same size leading to ct scan and referrals to Bristol, he was admitted to hdu ward early the next morning and remained in hospital for another night, during that time seeing eye specialists, other consultants re arm/shoulder and having mri scan. He finally left hospital some 48hrs after first coming into childrens A&e. I cannot thank all of the nhs staff for their support, concern, compassion and professionalism, working under so much pressure You as chief executive should be mightily proud of all staff, no matter their role nor seniority, as they were amazing throughout. We can thank you enough for what you do and i apologise for to being able to name colleagues specifically but hopefully this can be fed back to all involved.....
