Review titled Review for Coventry Hospital – Repeated Delays and Lack of Urgent Care for Potential Ovarian Cancer
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Raluca Dumitrica - Posted on 26 October 2024
I was referred to Coventry Hospital by my GP as early as May or June after initial tests indicated alarming results. Despite this, I received no follow-up or feedback from the hospital. Recently, after a second emergency referral, my concerns have only deepened. My CA125 blood test shows a high level, which can indicate ovarian cancer, and my GP has consistently noted my severe struggle with endometriosis—a condition that has caused debilitating pain every month for years. It’s been more than 10 days since my second emergency referral, and I have yet to be assigned to a specialist. Given my test results and chronic condition, I would have expected the hospital to prioritize my case. Instead, I find myself in an unending cycle of waiting, filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my health. Attempts to contact the hospital for an update have been met only by receptionists in the booking department, who can only provide basic assistance. They have tried to support me by giving additional contact numbers, but each attempt has ended with no replies or any indication of when, or if, I’ll receive the care I need. This unresponsiveness highlights a severe lack of coordination and efficiency within Coventry Hospital’s management, which is extremely concerning. As a taxpayer and a long-time resident in the West who has never relied on benefits, I expected a certain standard of healthcare service. This experience has been a shocking contrast to those expectations, especially when facing potentially life-threatening health issues. It has become clear that this system, particularly at Coventry Hospital, does not provide the safety net I believed would be there in urgent situations. Moreover, the impact on my mental health has been profound. Living with the uncertainty of a possible ovarian cancer diagnosis and the unrelenting pain of endometriosis without appropriate medical support has taken a serious toll on my mental well-being. Every delay and unanswered call only heightens my fear and frustration, leaving me feeling powerless and unsupported. If my condition is indeed as serious as the tests suggest, will I even find out before it’s too late? Coventry Hospital and the NHS must recognize the detrimental effects that such delays and lack of communication have on patients’ physical and mental health. It’s essential that management address these systemic issues promptly to ensure that urgent cases are prioritized and that patients receive the care they urgently need. This experience has been unacceptable, and I hope this review serves as a call to action, not only for my own case but also for the countless others in similar situations.

Attended clinic 3 again today. The doctor is absolutely one of the best I have ever seen. Very thorough, kind and a lovely nature. Wish others in other clinics were the same.

Review titled Good in parts - full marks to nurses!
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Peter Bennett - Posted on 23 August 2024
Triage happened quickly and after various tests I ended in resus with gallbladder problems eventually diagnosed. Up to now with some expected delays very impressed. Transferred to surgical short stay ward where I spent 4 nights. All the nurses were exceptional throughout. My ‘negative’ was about communication. The doctors who came round once a day were clearly competent but were a different group each day so I had to repeat my experiences several times - this did not give me confidence in the continuity of treatment. My main concern (for others more than me) was that the nurses didn’t seem to have any access to what the doctors had said. A gentleman in my ward who was clearly suffering from dementia was given a detailed briefing, none of which he was taking in, and the word cancer was mentioned. His wife, visiting later, couldn’t get any sense out of him and the nurses couldn’t tell him anything and couldn’t speak to the doctors. It seems that the various threads of the service were working well enough but the communication really needs to be reviewed

Review titled Fabulous care

My 86 year old father was sent by his GP for an emergency bloodtest. All of the staff treated him with great respect and kindness. He wears a hearing aid and stuggles to hear, particularly when anxious. Everyone made sure he understood the tests and discussed the results, making sure he understood. They calmed him with reassurance and even made us both smile and laugh. My dad and I both agreed that we are very lucky to have such a quality service available to us all. Particular thanks to the lovely Dr- I'm sorry that I can't remember her name. And thank you for the tea and sandwiches- we really appreciated them

Review titled Fantastic service from Eye Clinic

My husband had many bleeds at rear of his eye which resulted in him losing his vision in that eye. No real reason seemed to be apparent, so surgery was undertaken. This was a complete success, carried out as a day patient and included cataract removal. His vision is now excellent. We would like to thank all the many staff involved who were kind, efficient and very helpful. A really wonderful experience from the whole team.

Review titled Wonderful staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was terrified at the thought of having an endoscopy after several accounts from people saying how awful it was. I have to say that every single member of staff from the receptionist through to the consultant performing the procedure were absolutely amazing. The nurse who took my obs was lovely and very understanding when I explained my fears, reassuring me and telling me to try and stay calm and breathe deeply etc. This kindness and empathy continued when I was taken into the room for the procedure. These wonderful NHS workers see this carried out every day but still found the time to try and put me at my ease. As a direct result of their care and reassurance the whole experience was far less traumatic than I was expecting. A huge thankyou to everyone on the endoscopy unit

I attended the minor injuries unit first thing today as I has a nail go through my foot. The friendly team in the minor injuries section were brilliant, with triage, x-ray, consultation and discharge all within 2.5 hours. I am aware that waiting times can be much longer at times, but the staff there are heroes all, and should be worshipped for doing a fantastic job. Thank you. Please pass this to the department for me...

Review titled Poor experience
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by DCB - Posted on 13 June 2024
I was recalled for assessment to UH Coventry following screening mammography. The unit was noisy with pop music with adverts playing constantly. Staff got my name wrong three times. I found it difficult to understand the person who saw me first because of her accent. My husband was parking the car (it took him 30 minutes to find a space) and I was not allowed to wait for him before I was seen. She took basic medical details but did not ask me about my past medical history. She did record that I use the second of my Christian names but nobody else even noticed. When I got into the biopsy room I was not given the opportunity to ask about the biopsy procedure and when I stated that I was uncertain that I wanted to commit to that immediately was told that my lesions were very worrying and that "if it was my breast I would want something done". This was inappropriate and raised my anxiety levels even further. I felt bullied and compelled to have biopsies performed then and there. The staff in the biopsy room introduced themselves so quickly I did not catch any of their names. Everything was rushed. I felt as though I was just a "walking breast" and that I did not have a choice. I was not initially given enough local anaesthetic and it was painful. I also have mobility issues - I have recently come off crutches following complex knee surgery. Nobody even noticed my limp and I was too frightened to say anything. Having told me my condition was serious I was then told I will have to wait 4-6 weeks for my results and that I was being sent back to Solihull "most ladies want to go back to the hospital nearest their home". When I queried the wait for results I was told it is workload pressures and nothing I could do. When I questioned about how I was going to cope with the uncertainty and anxiety I was told you will not lose anything by waiting a few weeks. this remark was unfortunate in the extreme and implied that the results were expected to be positive. I left as soon as I could after the procedure with massive anxiety convinced that my demise is imminent my husband was reduced to tears himself. I was too intimidated to ask any questions and was given no advice about what to do about my existing medication which contains a drug known to cause gynecomastia and also oestrogen only HRT. I have left messages with the breast care nurses as instructed today 3 times, but I have not been called back. I am frightened anxious and unsupported.
