  1. Review titled Amazing care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by James - Posted on 03 October 2022

I came after having a bicycle accident, with open wounds that needed closing. I was seen by a doctor in about 20 minutes and was extremely well looked after. Was also given a ct scan to check for broken jaw. All the nurses and doctor made me feel special and made the experience much less traumatic. Thank you to all the great staff at Lewisham A&E

  2. Review titled Well organised and competent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Visited this clinic twice; each time a pleasant experience, short waiting time, friendly receptionist, nurse and consultant, choice of signing in procedure (terminal or person), toilets nearby. I had the impression that staff respected each other and work like a team. Best of all my condition has improved lots.

  3. Review titled My Journey Through Lewisham Hospital

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Charles Montlake - Posted on 06 November 2022

We arrived late evening 25th October, explained to the receptionist that I am a Cancer patient under care and I believed I had a chest infection. Don’t know how but we were hardly settled in the waiting room before we were called in to the Triage Nurse. She was amazing, listened to my symptoms, did tests and agreed with me. I am also worried about my Kidneys and asked her to check those too. The nurse phoned through for an isolated bay for me in the A&E ward, none were available so she assured us that we would stay in her room until a bay was available. As it was she found a bay on the resuscitation ward and took me there until a bay in the A&E ward was available. 3 nurses attended to me, bloods were taken, I was canulated and ECG completed in the blink of an eye. So incredibly efficient Bay 3 in the A&E ward became available, and a wonderful nurse looked after me. I let her know the triage nurse had recommended a chest x-ray, which then happened within ½ an hour. Results back we now know I have a chest infection with pneumonia (and elevated Creatinine). I could feel my temperature spiking, the nurse checked and almost immediately Paracetamol was being pumped in to me. A&E beds are a tad on the hard side, as I was going to be there a while, until a space could be found on the ward, the nurse arranged for a hospital bed to be brought so I would be more comfortable. Up to Chestnut ward. I don’t remember much about Chestnut, my infection was now at its height, other than a feeling of being extremely well looked after and very very safe. I apologise to all the Doctors and Nurses, you looked after me fantastically and I can’t remember your names, I am so sorry. Finally, feeling much better I was moved to Alder ward where, again, the care was like nothing I have experienced before. I would like to especially thank the 2 nurse managers, their level of care, professionalism and humour pervades the whole ward making it just so special. I had some dark moments in Alder and I thank everyone who helped me through them I would also like to mention the cleaning team, the ward was immaculate as were the toilets, most of the time I will not say anything about catering but that really needs a rethink. I could go on but…. Let me just say that the care I received and that I saw being given to my fellow patients was just truly amazing. I hope I never need A&E again, but if I do it is Lewisham Hospital every time

  4. Review titled Poor care of the elderly at Lewisham Hospital

    by elephantww46 - Posted on 14 October 2022

My father of 91 was admitted with a urine infection, which caused delirium. In the second week they initiated the discharge procedure without our knowledge, to send him home on a care package that was no longer suitable, due to the lack of mental capacity caused by his illness. We had to plead with nurses to keep him in, because we felt he was not well enough to go home. They tested him the next day and found he had another infection, so they kept him in. We knew that the discharge procedure had been initiated, because several people from the hospital discharge team phoned me about 3 times over the weekend to ask if my father had arrived home safely! It took 2 months to decide he needed to go to a care home, even though I told them that from the beginning. They do not have enough staff to have a nurse in the cohort bay, which my father is in, at all times. When visiting my father, I was asked a few times to look out for patients who were at risk of falling. The communication with relatives is poor. They had no restrictions on visitors, or any visible guidance about how visitors should behave in an elderly care ward. The majority of visitors did not wear masks, there was not enough visible hand sanitiser on the ward. To have the hand sanitiser outside of the ward door is useless, because you still have to touch the door. A visitor with no mask and a persistent cough was allowed to visit a relative in my father's bay on 2 occasions. I told the ward manager the next day and I was met with rudeness and indifference. She said that she couldn't tell people what to do and that they were following government guidelines. My father was ill with a chest infection. My sister and I noticed that our father's breathing was not normal. We told the nurses, who said his observations were normal. It took 3 days for doctors to realise something was wrong, he was then put on antibiotics and oxygen. They only put in restrictions in the bay my father was in. Visitors were still allowed to visit the rest of the ward with no guidance, with still the majority of visitors not wearing masks. I sent an email to one of the ward managers, pleading with her to take action. It was not until covid had spread to the rest of the ward that restrictions put in place. The reality is that covid figures started to rise 3 weeks ago and measures could have been put in place earlier. It may not have prevented the virus from getting in, but we will never get a chance to know that. Older people deserve a lot more respect and care than what they are getting from Lewisham Hospital.

  5. Review titled Excellent care

This morning I had a colonoscopy and had wonderful care from all the doctors and nurses concerned. They all put me at ease and made certain of my welfare throughout, keeping me informed at every stage. The procedure was painless and I can only thank everyone involved.

  7. Review titled Poor maternity experience

    by Unhappy J - Posted on 24 August 2022

I found the maternity ward to be a disgrace. I have never experienced anything like it. I had a consultation at 9:00 am and was rushed for a growth scan at 36 weeks pregnant for 4:30pm, and then had to see a doctor afterwards - but that doctor didn’t come until 11:00pm. On the Labour ward, I was left for four hours and had to explain to my Midwife twice and the Doctor twice. I received no food or drink and no pillow, despite waiting for hours upon hours. Nobody came to check me - I feel like I could have given birth and nobody would have noticed! I did enjoy hearing staff outside my room discussing their dinners and reality TV though. My baby had slow growth, I was told I’d have a scan the following week. They then rung me next morning at 9:00 am, after sending me home 11:00 pm the night before, for an emergency scan. I sat in the Ultrasound department for two hours. Nobody came, no admin team were available (I found them terrible too, and very very rude!) Eventually a midwife asked me what I’m still doing here. I then broke down in tears as I was told my Ultrasound hadn’t even been booked in. There was nowhere for me to go from there, nobody knew who had tried to book my ultrasound and nobody knew if it was of any urgency or not. I was told though, that I could go and wait in the Labour ward (after my 11:00pm stint the night before) or go home and call someone tomorrow. I tried to call the next day but of course it was a Saturday and nobody gives birth or needs help on the weekend! Head of Midwifery was also on holiday. I’ve been left with some very severe anxiety and no explanation.

  8. Review titled Great Experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 February 2023

After a fall at home I was taken to Lewisham a&e. There was a long wait to be seen but this was at their busiest time of the day. They decided I should be admitted for observations but there weren't any beds available so I spent the night on a hospital trolly but I was looked after well - being monitered regularly . First thing in the morning I was transfered to Chestnut ward....where I spent several nights. My care was outstanding - despite the shortage of staff. I was then transfered to Alder ward where I stayed for 7 weeks. Again my care experience was outstanding despite the shortage of staff. I experienced the 'good, the bad, and the ugly ' sides of the NHS during my stay. The'good' were the staff who 'overall' were amazing dedicated people I cannot praise those who looked after me enough. Thank You ... the 'bad' was the way these dedicated staff are expolited - overworked and underpayed. The 'ugly' is the lack of care, funding, and general neglect and respect given to our NHS, the staff, and in turn we the general public who rely on this service by government. Many thanks to everyone who looked after me. Since being discharged I have attended several other specialist clinics and indeed I am still being given the best care some 5 months on.
