  1. Review titled Exceptional care and support

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Charlotte - Posted on 13 February 2023

I would just like to formally thank durham hospital for the exceptional service that myself and my newborn daughter received from maternity services (PAU, Ward 10, Neo Natal Care and surgical team) over the last few weeks. They truly are a credit to the hospital and I could not thank them enough for the support they provided throughout the remainder of my pregnancy and birth of my daughter. They were all incredibly caring, attentive, supportive, reassuring and responsive throughout our stay.

  2. Review titled Day Surgery - staff were amazing

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Hannah Strong - Posted on 11 February 2023

I have extreme anxiety and a fear of all things medical. I was in for day surgery and was an absolute mess but I got the most amazing nurse who made sure my boyfriend could stay with me until I went into theatre and even found a room for me. Her compassion and calmness was genuinely part of the reason I didn't chicken out. Everyone I encountered were very professional; the anethatist talked me through everything and honestly she must've been sick of me, along with the surgeons team who made sure I knew what was happening and answered all my questions. My only complaint is i got sent home with painkillers I know don't work.. if they checked my file, they'd have seen I've been prescribed them before i was cut into and I didn't get them again because I was still in pain but i was told there's nothing anyone could do. When I got in touch with PALS for my own peace of mind, I was told if my consultants team were made aware, they probably could've prescribed something else which is annoying because I knew this at the time and felt like nobody was listening to me so ended up in a lot of pain until my GP could send something else to the chemist which ended up being in the afternoon. That could've been avoided had I been listened to and not been told to go to my GP when I'm sat in a hospital, which usually you can't even get an appointment until a month later anyway. You should not be made to do that after surgery not knowing if you can even talk to anyone the same day. Everything's a bit hazy from the drugs and anesthetic so I only have some memory of the day but my boyfriend said I wasn't the easiest patient to deal with.. I genuinely can't remember because anaesthetic but I'm very grateful to everyone who treat me with humanity and I'm so sorry for being such a difficult, nervous, apparently sassy part of your shift. Please get this back to the day surgery unit and the people who looked after me. I hope they know how fantastic and appreciated they are.

  3. Review titled Disappointing

Rated 1 star out of 5

Unfortunately I had to attend Accident & Emergency with my 13 Yr old daughter. To start things off the car park situation at Durham hospital is terrible. As an already stressed parent taking your child to hospital, pulling up to a queue to even get in heightens everything. Then to find a super small car park for visitors that is quite a walk to a&e doesn't help. I couldn't exactly drop my child off at the entrance to a&e and then go and park. Not to mention the price of parking and having to be cash! I understood that a&e isn't the most pleasant place to be but the experience could be so much better. The lady on the desk wasn't particularly friendly. When you are already very anxious it would be so much nicer if someone just smiled and helped you feel welcome rather than making you feel like an inconvenience. The waiting room is the most awful place to sit and wait. It's far to small, uncomfortable and makes you feel ill just being there. My daughter was called to triage where the nurse stood in the waiting room in front of on the whole waiting room, hands on hips asking why we were there. That could have been really embarrassing for my daughter if it had been for something other than an injury. We were sent along to paediatrics which turned things around as staff were lovely. The actual ward isn't the nicest place but at least we were away from the main a&e Im not sure how the waiting area got passes its health and safety check, another Dad sat down on the chairs and because of the low cupboards behind the chairs banged his head. When we first arrived a mam was infront of me with her twin babies in car seats both with oxygen bags. I had to help her with the car seats and the staff did come to help but, she had already being in tears in the car park struggling to carry everything as she was on her own. The member of staff working in the car park had being very sharp to her about when to park despite what she had been advised. He hadn't offered and help at all. I hope this may go towards putting some of these things right.

  4. Review titled I felt that this was handled unprofessionally

    by Agnes49 - Posted on 06 March 2023

My relatives neighbour phoned me to inform me that they had 6/7 months to live and had been admitted to Ward 1, Durham University Hospital. I phoned and told a staff member what I had been told by the neighbour. Their response was, well we all have to die sometime. I was in shock at their response and really upset. I felt that this was handled unprofessionally.

  5. Review titled well oiled machine

Rated 5 stars out of 5

What a positive experience I had whilst being treated on this ward. Staff care was first class, patients were cared for with dignity and respect, no request was unanswered and assistance was given swiftly and with care. The staff worked as a team from consultants to nursing assistants to cleaners, they all appeared to help one another as and when required. They were always cheerful and upbeat. In both wards I was in on this unit there was a garden courtyard space which I feel was under utilized, with doors from the wards it could be a safe pleasant outside space for both patients and staff to enjoy. The food was great and I am very grateful for the excellent care you gave me

  6. Review titled Brilliant Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

All staff were amazing from the nurse who met patients on arrival, through the support staff who booked me in to the clinicians who dealt with my case. Their care and kindness was visible in the way all attendees were being looked after, not just me. It’s especially impressive given the pressures staff are currently working under. My case was handled very efficiently and I came away feeling so much better, reassured and confident I would know what to do if I took a turn for the worse. Staff were exemplary in their professionalism. Thank you!

  8. Review titled Exemplary medical staff under great pressure.

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Pam - Posted on 20 January 2023

I was referred to A&E from NHS helpline. From arrival I was treat with respect, courtesy and professionalism. I was shocked by the number of patients the department was coping with and throughout a long wait I saw staff working tirelessly. The junior doctor I saw was thorough and apologetic for the wait when he had no control over this. He and all his colleagues are doing a great job in an underfunded and understaffed service. Well done.

  9. Review titled Thanks to all at University Hospital

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by john smith - Posted on 16 January 2023

I was only there for 47 hours with a fractured ankle but must have encountered at least 40, maybe even up to 50or 60 people who attended or spoke to me in some capacity. Reception, porters, nurses, xray, doctors, theatre team, anaesthetics team, plaster room, physio, occupational therapy et al -- and all I saw and received was hard work and commitment carried out with smiles and friendliness. Thank you all. Sometimes things don't happen to our liking, but I wonder wether the 'have a go at every aspect' remarks from the anonymous reviewers are made by people who just whinge at everything and cannot display some empathy for those who are trying so hard to be at our service under conditions they themselves would run a mile from

  10. Review titled Unsafe!

Rated 1 star out of 5

Rude staff, poor communication and Consultant with an attitude problem! Absolutely deplorable service and wait times, med secretaries have disgusting attitudes and so unhelpful. To top off the shocking service you have to pay to park, £3 for the first 2 hours! And its only cash!!! Absolutely avoid this awful place if you can!
