Review titled Management requires review them selves!
by Anonymous - Posted on 25 April 2025
Last weekend had to take a colleague to A&E Durham. She fell over and damaged her shoulder and foot. 8hrs with drunks, druggies, prisoners, homeless people, minor injuries that should have seen their local doctor and then the more deserving poor old and young children who required urgent care. At one point See and Treat closed shop, went home and told no-one, leaving patients waiting around and not informed what was happening. We told the staff nurse who explained that the same happened the previous weekend! What a shambles! So where is hospital manager who should be checking what is happening in their hospital. You should be getting off your chair and visiting each department weekly. You should be taking to your staff, on the shop floor, weekly. It is not effective or professional to be sat waiting to read reports, when the finally reach you. Why are patients crowded together? I'm not the brightest bulb but surely streamlining certain cases is the obvious. And don't tell me it happens because if you do then is suggest you don't know your departments enough. Filter patients into Life threatening Regular drug related, drink related and police prisoners Non life threatening who can be requested to wait a while for their care Non urgent who should be advised to return to see the GP Come on management, earn the extremely high salaries you say you deserve. You need to be more hands on and less report readers. It never has been and never will be the answer to make the excuses you make! NHS - A service that makes the difference! People who actually care and know how to.

Review titled Treetops ward Plastic Surgeons
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 25 April 2025
My granddaughter gashed her chin and needed urgent care. Saw the more desirable and more efficient, compassionate and skillful side of the NHS for her. Was sent to Treetops ward to see a plastic surgeon who saw her and sorted her within twenty mins. Lovely bedside manners from a couple of young specialists who couldn't have done more. Very skillful people. Clear advice and patient. The registrar even dropped in to check and reassure us.l The way a department should be run.

Review titled Ward 2 outstanding
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Vicky Swinbank - Posted on 19 January 2025
I often hear and see bad reviews about Durham hospital however after such a bad experience in a nursing home I feel ward 2 at Durham hospital deserve a appreciation review after the exceptional care I recieved. Being a young girl in a powered wheelchair was no bother to all the staff on this ward. The ward manager was an exceptional manager and a great assest to the ward , very supportive and understanding of my needs. I would like to show my appreciation to all the staff however some went the extra mile for me and really stood out so a huge thank-you They were all caring, thoughtful, understanding, hardworking and dedicated to jobs. On another scale one member of staff went more than the extra mile and was unique and outstanding in her own way from my opinion nobody could fill her shoes, this lady took me washing home travelled to another hospital with it when transferred and did everything for me at such a high level of care which is very rare to see these days. I will never forget this ward and how much they've given me hope again, hopefully I'll be better and working alongside them one day. Keep up the hard work ward 2 and thank you. #ward2#stroke

Review titled Excellent care in very challenging circumstances
Rated 4 stars out of 5
by Gary Martin - Posted on 12 January 2025
I recently spent some time in the hospital after breaking my leg in a fall. The hospital was very busy due to extreme weather conditions but despite this and I have to say some very challenging patients I received excellent care. You read and see on the news the challenges NHS staff are facing but when you see it up close my admiration is limitless. I would just like to thank everyone who looked after me , you do an incredible job and I am so grateful. I am now back home recovering and I wish you all the best.

Review titled Excellent

After seeing so many negative reviews I thought it was best to share this. I took my infant to A&E yesterday after calling 111 and being advised to get there immediately myself as unfortunately there were no ambulances available. We arrived, we were seen within 20 minutes. The doctor we saw was fantastic and made my little one feel at ease and even got a smile! All of the staff were friendly and professional even when some people came in swearing at them. Which I felt there was no need for they were trying to help. Thank you so much! I can't recommend this hospital enough. The staff are doing their best under the current circumstances and need praise where praise it due. Thank you again!

Review titled Lack of communication and compassion.
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 22 November 2024
Admitted via ambulance following a collapse at home. Transferred to ambulance assessment bay after a short wait and attended to by care assistant, who did baseline observations, bloods & ECG. The department was very cold, so partner asked if I could have a blanket (a very thin blanket), which was inadequate, so my partner covered me with his and my coats. I was then moved to another room to wait on the trolley. The room didn’t have an emergency call bell so my partner was asked to stay with me. I was uncomfortable so my partner asked for a pillow and also asked a nurse when I’d be attended to, but the nurse shrugged their shoulders and said they didn’t know. After waiting several more hours and no sign of being attended to my partner asked again when I’d be seen. Nurse said the department was busy and I’d be seen when someone was free. During the wait in the department there was no communication from staff and no one ever asked me if I was comfortable or if I still felt unwell. After waiting several more hours my partner asked nurse again when I’d be seen, to be told the doctor would hopefully attend to me in a couple of hours. I felt completely ignored and wanted to go home to sleep, so my partner asked a nurse if I could go home. Nurse said they’d speak to the doctor, but after another hour the nurse hadn’t returned to update me, so my partner asked if I could go home again. Nurse came in removed my cannulae and said if I wanted to leave I could. I asked if I needed to speak to the doctor or sign a form, but nurse told me just to go home. As a retired nurse who worked for the trust for over thirty five years, I am ashamed to admit that the care in the department that evening was substandard. At no time did I feel I was being treated with care or compassion.

I arrived at the hospital having been referred after seeing a physio at a local GP practice, as she wanted me to have an X-ray. After a bit of initial confusion, I was dealt with extremely efficiently by delightful staff who all went out of their way to help. Thank you, Shotley Bridge hospital!

Review titled Bad experience

My husband was told to urgently attend a and e following an evening gp appointment to check for thyroid storm and heart failure. On attending and being seen initially they told him they "dont do thyroid bloods" and that ecg could be done at the gp surgery so sent him home with tachycardia and no blood checks done. Gp states there would of been a letter for them to read regarding the situation but clearly it wasn't read. I have had thyroid bloods done in a and e myself when taken in by ambulance so I know they can be done there.
