  1. Review titled Overworked nursing staff - diabolical patient food

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Adrian Violett - Posted on 09 November 2024

This review is about extremely poor catering at the hospital. My sister was admitted to the hospital following a fall resulting in a broken hip. The medical care has been of a high standard and professionally delivered in a timely manner. However. It is clear to see that the majority of nursing staff appear overworked, often having to rush and having little time with patients, apart from what is clinically necessary. The least good experience has been the poor standard of food offered to patients. There seems to be limited choice and only preset options. The food often appears unappetising and presented in an appealing manner. The quality of food provided is frequently poor and not very flavoursome, with 'hot food' dishes being just warm when served. This, from personal observation, results in a great deal of food being uneaten and wasted. I have no knowledge of how or where food in this hospital is prepared but have the impression that it probably provided by a central kitchen which is not located in the hospital. I firmly believe that patients recover more speedily when receiving a choice of good quality, well prepared and presented food. Sadly, this is an area in which Watford General Hospital is not, to my mind, performing very well.

I had a gastroscopy at Watford hospital recently. I am a nervous patient, but all the nurses and doctors I met were so friendly and genuinely willing to explain and answer questions. It made such a difference and it was much appreciated.

3.5 weeks and 3 operations at Watford General following a double fracture of the leg. I can’t thank all the ward and orthopaedic staff enough for their patience, care, hard guy CT work and professionalism in getting me to this point, back home, following a very bad break. Thank you.

Thank you to all the staff on the Stroke unit. Their care of our mum was so kind, respectful and thorough. It was a very stressful time, made easier by being given the information about mums condition. Thank you to the therapists who worked with Mum so patiently. We were supported as a family by the amazing team.

Watford hospital is chaotic but I had an angiogram at the cardiac/X-ray section and I honestly can’t say enough nice things. The staff were without exception kind, thoughtful, patient and made a scary experience so much easier. They made me laugh and it was a very warm experience. Thank you all so much I really appreciated you

  7. Review titled 3 times in a week went to emergency and doctors said go home it’s all fine

by Sourabh Gupta - Posted on 01 September 2024

I’m having cough from last four weeks and went to Watford Hospital and Dr. diagnose and said everything is all right but from last two weeks I m not able to breath and pass out ever time. 2 days I called ambulances and they took me to emergency again after 4 hours the did my blood test, ecg, and X-ray . They said it’s all fine and sent me home. Yesterday again I got fainted 6 times a day again I went to emergency and doctor said you can go home there’s nothing serious. Don’t worry while coughing you will not die. I decided to go for my check to India as here doctors are incompetent I and helpless as my will and two daughters 13 and 8 are scared of my health No hope on NHS

  8. Review titled Outstanding service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

From the moment I arrived at triage having my waters broken, to the moment I left with my newborn, the staff’s support and standard of care at Watford General was outstanding. They put my needs first and gave me choices throughout the birth of my first child. I felt in control and empowered to share my voice. The attention to detail and level of expertise available to me was at a high standard. I really felt cared for and the whole experience was positive and celebrated for the joyous occasion that it was. It was clear that all staff communicated effectively with one another. My notes were referred to regularly as a high risk patient. I felt safe. My doctors and midwives kept me fully informed about different options throughout. I had a student midwife and a more experienced midwife. Both were superb. The surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses during my emergency C-section created such a calm environment! I would recommend Watford General to everyone for their birthing experience. From antenatal care to post natal care and support we have been blown away! I left the hospital feeling confident that I could nurse my child with the advice I was given! Thanks so much to the dedicated and hard working staff. It is clear that they want the very best for their patients. I will always think back fondly to the birth of my son at this amazing hospital.

  10. Review titled Ridiculous waiting times and not taken seriously.

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Georgia Barford - Posted on 11 September 2024

I’ve had a few visits to Watford a&e now and honestly… it’s a bit of a shambles. Two years ago I broke my wrist and sat there for 12 hours with no information about anything. I was sat there so long that I kissed an appointment they had made at St Albans to have the bones put back into place which I wasn’t even told existed. The 2nd visit was for abdominal pain which had been going on for a couple of weeks, they didn’t seem overly fussed and sent me home saying there’s no issues with me but I Could have a urine infection (which I had no symptoms of) - I was sent home feeling like I’d wasted their time and with antibiotics but ultimately had to return a week later as I actually had an absess growing which was getting worse and worse and had to have some really unpleasant surgery once the infection had spread and gotten to my bowels. The third visit was a few weeks after my surgery, I suddenly developed a horrendous pain and was concerned there was a similar issue to before. We waited patiently on the waiting area to be told I should have made them aware I was still there and in pain as they had forgotten I was there and misplaced my urine sample. After repeating the same story to 4 drs/nurses they decided to do blood tests which came back all okay. We were there for 7 hours before getting blood tests. I was concerned as previously I was sent home as all okay when I obviously was not… so they decided to make us wait an additional 2 hours to have some more drs come and “reassure me” that despite the fact nobody’s had a look they’ve decided nothings wrong. Finally, the gynaecology dr agreed to “try” to bring my follow up ultrasound forward as she agreed I shouldn’t be in this much pain and it might be worth looking at it to be on the safe side. Truthfully I have no confidence in Watford general at all anymore. The drs and nurses are all really lovely, and I know they’re doing their job. But 12hours in a&e for a broken arm which ultimately they never fixed. 6 hours to be misdiagnosed with a urine infection. And 9 hours to ultimately be told I’m making up abdominal pain in my mind?
