  1. Review titled After disability aware good hospital

by joseph taylor - Posted on 04 June 2024

I was referred to West Midlands Hospital for two conditions. On both outpatient appointments the Consultants were quite happy for my wife to sign for me as I am deaf, my wife has a degree in British Sign Language and I am used to her signing. My appointment with the first consultant at outpatients suggested I need to go into hospital for a laparoscopy. I was sent an appointment letter asking me to attend the West Midlands Hospital. We arrived on the day at 7.30 as requested and After waiting 90 minutes the receptionist came up to us and said I am sorry, they have said they can't see you as the interpreter has not arrived. My wife explained she would sign for me. The receptionist said she would let the ward know and it would be up to them. After waiting another 20 minutes I said to my wife I am not stopping we are going home. I am a nervous patient anyway and to go through this experience as well was too much. No one from the ward came down to discuss anything. I cancelled my laparoscopy inpatient appointment as I did not feel confident with the hospital at that point I was given information on how to complain and send it to the Quality and improvements assistant. We composed a letter of complaint and received a prompt reply stating that it was Ramsay ‘s Corporate policy to use their own interpreters. We requested a meeting with the hospital and met with the hospital director and the Quality improvement assistant. This is where things started to improve, it was a very productive meeting as we explained that it was not Ramsay's choice to use their interpreters but the deaf persons. This is actually laid down in various acts by parliament. The information we supplied was received very well and they apologised for it happening. They had already started to make improvements such as flash cards and portable electronic writing board, which in my experience shows they took the matter seriously. Hopefullty the staff will remain aware of these improvements and be useful for any deaf or hard of hearing patients in the future. Not sure if this has been applied to the Ramsay group of hospitals? After waiting a few months for the appointment for admission to the hospital for my hernia contacted the quality and improvement assistant and within half an hour got 2 appointments one for preadmission and another for admission date. From then on I did not have any problems whatsoever. When I was admitted all of the staff were so friendly and helpful. My wife signed to me and was with me right up until I went into the operating theatre and the recovery room afterwards. I cannot fault the care I was given at this hospital it is a shame they were not aware of the issues surrounding my disability. The hospital would get a 4 star review from me. Had it not been for the above but have got more. I would recommend this hospital.

Total Hip Replacement. From initial Consultant appointment through pre op assessments, surgery and post op care I couldn't have wished for better care from the friendly, professional staff who provided all the information I needed and answered all of my questions. My heart felt thanks to all of the staff involved. My recovery has been amazing so far, largely down to the skill and care of the surgeon and staff I think.

Received an appointment letter for an ultrasound for the 14/3/23 at 1750, arrived booked in with reception only to be told I’m not on their list so I can’t have the scan, unacceptable.

  5. Review titled Excellent Practice

First I would like to thank my GP for arranging an appointment with My surgeon. He and his team were brilliant. When he discovered I lived 30 miles away he moved me up the list to First, I thought this was very considerate. Aftercare advice from the staff was concise and to the point. I was allowed to leave for home after about 2 hours.
