  1. Review titled Lovely doctor, terrible receptionist.

by Laura Thomas - Posted on 24 October 2024

Once again I have to leave a review as there seems nowhere else to say what I need to say. This system is deliberately making things difficult. Monday 21st Oct. a GP but I am not allowed to name phoned me that a district nurse would be coming to my home to take blood for a suspected heart complaint. Very grateful to be able to speak to anyone who could deal with this after rude older receptionist talked nonsense. Stonewalled me.. Still waiting for district nurse 21.00 Thursday. Pls can someone sort this ?

  2. Review titled Mum has recently been diagnosed with dementia

    by robinww95 - Posted on 12 December 2023

About 18 months ago Mum started to blame her cleaner for taking things. As I live 350 miles away and Mum lives on her own and has no other family I was relying on a cleaner to help her mange her home. These were the first early signs there was something more going on with her mental capacity. Unfortunately I had to let the cleaner go as Mum refused to have anyone in the house and she said she could manage. Around spring this year the issues became much more apparent, with Mum regularly becoming agitated and paranoid - loosing keys and money, believing she had been burgled, forgetting to take her diabetic tablets and so on. Neighbours also raised concerns about her behaviour. I went via her GP and after several weeks or so Social Services and the Cober Complex Care and Dementia Team became involved. It took a few months for things to really start to move forward but throughout the process I was regularly informed and consulted on steps being taken to help and assess Mum to get a diagnosis. The dementia team in particular have been a great help, re-assuring me things were being done, keeping closely in touch and helping me better understand more about the disease and her mental capacity issues (now diagnosed with Mixed Dementia) - I felt they genuinely had Mum's interests at heart and are really good with her. The regular visits she has in place are particularly re-assuring given I live so far away, knowing they can step in if needed and engage the other services. More recently Mum had a UTI which ended in Mum being hospitalised for 3 weeks. During her stay she was looked after well with a support helper to sit with her and chat, and she got involved with the daytime activities and seemed to be relatively relaxed and quite happy - although understandably was keen to go home. Being involved with her discharge over a teams meeting was really helpful and the hospital liaised with Mum's carers which ensured she had a smooth transition back into her home. Mum now has carers coming in twice a day. She isn't happy about all the different people coming in (district nurses, carers and other support workers) and the challenge is its not the same people who visit her each day so with her short term memory deteriorating she finds this challenging quite understandably. From my experience so far I feel that the Older Peoples mental health services do a great job in how they deal with the patients as well as the families - respectful, reassuring and calm, despite the NHS being stretched. Mum is deteriorating, and I wish to keep her independent and in her home for as long as possible. I am uncertain what will happen in the near future when we may need to re-think the situation. This is a huge worry especially given I live so far away and work full time, and I feel support to help plan her future and options would be really helpful, and so I am clear on what lies ahead and what support will be available for when she may need to move into a care home.

  3. Review titled Excellent ongoing care

by Nancledra - Posted on 14 December 2022

Our son receives excellent ongoing care from the consultant, secretary, nurse, phlebotomist and reception staff within the Learning Disability Team. The family is treated with the utmost respect and dignity with any occurring problem dealt with speedily and efficiently. Their valuable time is always available with assurance we are important easing our thoughts of maybe being a nuisance sometimes. Most importantly our son also holds the consultant and his team in high regard, feeling fully at ease with all members of the team which inevitably enhances a good mental health for him and the family unit as a whole. We cannot praise this team enough and feel very lucky indeed having them at our disposal. Thank you for always listening
