I went in on a Thursday evening with a prescription for 7 days course of antibiotics. They gave me half and told me to come back on Sunday for the other half and they gave me an ‘I owe you note’ . I went back on Sunday and found a different pharmacist on duty who told me I should have enough left from my first half of the antibiotics to last me another couple of days, and told to come back on Monday. They had my medicine in stock and even showed it to me. I asked them to write the collection date on the ‘I owe you’ note that they gave me on Thursday but they refused. I explained that I followed the rules the pharmacy had set for me and I am here and now you are changing the rules . And I have to bear the consequences of the staff at this pharmacy not working to the same standards. I have walked half an hour to get here and I have to walk another half an hour to get back. They just looked at me as though it’s my problem it’s my illness. They did not seem to realise that they should not be treating me like a puppet. Telling me to come and go as they please. They had my prescription and my medication. I was at their mercy . I explained that I appreciate why everyone has to manage the antibiotics carefully and I also pleaded that one day is not going to make a difference to the antibiotics. And I will need that second half to complete my 7 day course. In the end I saw that I could not get through to them and I resorted to begging but they showed no mercy. They just treated me like I was addicted to penicillin and I might take it home and misuse it. Monday came and I called them before I went back and asked if they were ready to give me my medicine. The pharmacist on duty called me back. I explained what happened on the previous day. They apologised and said they would have let me have the medicine on Sunday under those circumstances. They went on to make excuses for their colleagues like staff shortages and just ignored the fact that their colleague told me why they didn’t want to give me the medicine and it wasn’t staff shortage or anything else. It was because they believed I had enough at home to last me a couple more days. So here I sit and wonder where I can go and what I can do to help people to see that we all get sick sometimes even doctors and pharmacists and no one deserves to be treated like this.
