So took my son here for a review directed to them by 111 for assessment of a sore throat. Apparently you can only have a bacterial sore throat if you have puss in your throat !!!!!! If you don’t have puss it’s viral The mind boggles. She was going to send him away with nothing despite having abscence of a cough. Temp of 38.4 and tender anterior lymphadenopathy and a bright red throat. And throw in the fact he is immunocompramised which she was told. Had it for over a week and worsening symptoms today. What worries me is that I am an advanced nurse practitioner and know her statement re only having a bacterial sore throat is an absolute load of rubbish so I did challenge her decision. To which she advised she wasn’t sure what to do. Eventually she decided to ring OOHfor advice when again I pointed out his clinical symptoms. I did not reveal my profession to her out of courtesy and the fact I was astounded at her lack of knowledge. At least he got the right treatment for a Bacterial sore throat from a professional with the right knowledge. So for your pharmacists information you may need to highlight to them that you can have a bacterial throat infection without the presence of puss.
