I have osteoarthritis in both knees which was confirmed by scans a few years ago.I take no medication for this but the past week I have been in pain. I Couldn't get a Gp appointment so left a message with receptionist who asked Gp for advice. He said to try Over the counter Nurofen Plus as it is an anti inflammatory and codeine. If this doesn't help he would prescribe a stronger dose of codeine but for now to try this first I went into the pharmacy I was dressed in a hoodie and tracksuit bottoms so straight away the man serving looked me up and down in a disapproving way I asked for a box of the nurofen plus to which the man said "what's it for?" I explained about my knee and he shook his head and said "your GP would never have recommended this, no way!" I was quite shocked and asked him to repeat himself he proceeded to tell me "there is no way a GP would advise this product I very much doubt it!"and then said he wouldn't sell it me as it is addictive and to go back to my GP I took great offence at his comment and it was then obvious he did not believe that I had spoken with GP. I was shocked at how rude he became He said "I can sell it this once but your not getting it again!" I then asked for the pharmacist and explained that I felt this young man was very accusing and was assuming I was fabricating some story to get codeine! The pharmacist said that it's very difficult because they have a lot of customers who abuse codeine and have strict guidelines I agreed that there should be questions asked when buying medication however the rudeness of this man was disgusting. He made me feel like a criminal for asking for some pain relief. He went on to say "I'm sure I've sold it you before!" (He had not it was first time I had taken it) I myself work as a clinical Nurse specialist and if I spoke to any of my patients in that way, I would lose my job. If this is the way they interrogate every customer then I'm surprised they have any custom. Why have these products on the shelf if you are not going sell them, people can take personal responsibility of their own health alongside any advice pharmacy give. If you think every person asking for pain relief is going to become addicted then you shouldn't be doing the job I will never go there again and suggest people avoid if they plan on being in pain and needing analgesics because you will be judged and looked down on for even suggesting anything with codeine
