  1. Review titled Extremely unhelpful and bureaucratic

by Matt Wingett - Posted on 30 December 2024

I had an extremely unhelpful interaction with this chemist, and I'm writing it up here because I'm frustrated, but also hope they will see this review and look at their own behaviour and policy. The background: I drove up to Otterburn from Portsmouth yesterday, an exhausting 7 hour drive in rainy conditions. When I got to the rental I'm staying at as I visit family, I discovered it to be near a road with traffic that kept me awake all night. I'm an extremely light sleeper and thus require earplugs. However, I also have a chronic case of eczema in my ears, which is exacerbated by using earplugs. I have a steroid cream prescribed for the ears, but unfortunately am out of it atm, and in such cases use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to control it. I expected it would be quiet at night in the National Park, so didn't bring earplugs. However, on finding I need them I went to Parkside Pharmacy to get them. I was exhausted when I arrived because of the long drive and bad night's sleep. Whilst there, I asked for over-the-counter steroid cream. I was asked why I needed it, and I explained that I get eczema when using earplugs. I was told I would need to get a prescription. I asked for the over-the-counter non-presctiption steroid cream hydrocortisone. A smiling young woman asked why I needed the non-prescription cream. I explained again that I needed it to keep my ears from itching, otherwise they will keep me awake all night when I use the earplugs. Once again she refused to sell me the hydrocortisone cream because she can't sell it for use on my "face". I explained it wasn't for my face, it was for me ears. She again refused to sell it. I also have eczema on my back, so I asked for the over-the-counter hydrocortisone to alleviate that. Again she refused. I was too exhausted to carry on arguing with her, so left with no earplugs and no hydrocortisone. This leaves me, as New Year comes in, with the prospect of several nights of disturbed sleep. I am extremely susceptible to poor sleep and it affects my thinking and awareness. With no respite elsewhere, I will be facing a long drive home, exhausted and unrested. It's a dangerous state of affairs and it's completely unnecessary. I've used a non-prescription steroid cream to control my eczema when prescription cream isn't available for at least 30 years. I have never encountered someone refusing to sell an over-the-counter cream like this. I'm tired out, fed up and dreading the long drive home. I came up here away from the city to relax, and this is what I got instead: a complete lack of understanding and a "computer says no" attitude. I'm very angry, but also afraid of driving home exhausted. I feel humiliated and utterly helpless. All the shops will be shutting over New Year's and without sleep I will be a wreck - expecially because I can't get what I need easily elsewhere. I hope I don't crash on the way home, basically. Very, very disappointed with the terrible service I received.
