About
Blackdown Support Group aims to harness the skills and compassion of its local community, to provide a caring service to add to the care provided by the Primary Health Care team working in the area of the Blackdown practice.Set up to meet those health and social care needs which largely fall outside the remit of most statutory service providers, by providing a locally based, flexible service, via a small army of local volunteers, it offers a cost-effective range of practical and social support to the rurally scattered and often isolated communities of the Blackdown Hills.

Mid and East Devon, and Taunton Deane, Somerset.

Services the Blackdown Support Group provide are: • someone to chat to • help with shopping • respite for carers • escorts for clients to hospital/business appointments • transport to and from appointments with doctors, opticians and dentists • transport to local social events so that clients can keep in touch with friends • luncheon and tea clubs in different places within the area • short term loan of wheelchairs• footcare • advocacy, help with form filling • a specially converted vehicle for hire capable of carrying a wheelchair-bound passenger and one other, plus a driver
