About

IA is a national patient support group run by and for people with ileostomies and ileo-anal pouches. Established in 1956 by a group of people with ileostomies and some members of the medical profession IA is totally funded by donations and subscriptions.

IA’s core objectives are to help those facing these operations to return to a normal active lifestyle as soon as possible after surgery. With approx 10000 members 54 local groups a postal group and a team of specially trained visitors IA is able to provide patients pre- and post-surgery with the invaluable support of talking to someone who has shared the same experience.

Although major surgery of this nature will disrupt a person’s lifestyle recovery will often be assisted by contact with people who have been through a similar experience and IA works hard to raise awareness and challenge the fear and misconceptions that surround bowel disease and surgery.
