Barnet Mencap was established in 1965 and for over fifty years it has provided advice, information and support for people with learning disabilities or autism and their family carers. Today Barnet Mencap provides a range of services and campaigns with people with learning disabilities and their families to secure good services and support in the borough.

Anybody can obtain advice/information, carers and people with learning disabilities or autism.

Further information

Family Support Offering independent advice, information and guidance to parents and carers of children and young people with additional needs. The service includes: Drop-in services for parents/carers of children aged 0-5. Help with accessing services, disability benefits and the statementing process for special educational needs. Telephone advice and information, and/or home visits. Support with writing letters to the Local Authority or preparing for meetings, and attendance/support at those meetings.Community Opportunities Project Providing people with learning disabilities aged 16+ the opportunity to take part in a wide range of community based leisure and learning activities including day trips, bowling and restaurant nights,  sport and fitness sessions, art and drama. Exploring London including visits to galleries, museums. The project also has a social group for older people.Equality Housing Supporting adults with learning disabilities to live independently, either in shared housing or in their own property, by empowering them to develop skills and grow in confidence. The project helps them to: Manage their tenancy and housing related support. Manage their money and budgeting skills. Plan meals, shopping and food preparation. Build a social life, make friends and access community services. Deal with Benefits and correspondence. Create safe, individual and 'homely' living spaces. Play a role in the decision making of the project.Day breaks A service offering people with learning disabilities of all ages the opportunity to take a break from their everyday living situation. It also gives carers some time for themselves. There are local short breaks and also short holidays available. Each person gets individual support specific to their needs. Working for You Offering support for anybody aged 18+ with a learning disability or autism in the borough. We support with benefits, housing, letters, and any other support around your learning disability or autism. Autism Service Offering Autism Screenings for anybody who thinks they may be on the autism spectrum, the first step on the pathway to a diagnosis. We also offer other support, workshops and social sessions for autistic adults in the borough of Barnet.
