Target group

RAD offers a range of services to all deaf people. RAD’s Independent Living service provides support for deaf people who have additional support needs, such as a physical or learning disability and/or mental health needs. RAD’s befriending service can provide friendly conversation and companionship on a regular basis.

RAD’s Independent Living service provides support to deaf people who have additional support needs, such as a physical or learning disability and/or mental health needs. RAD’s staff are either Deaf themselves or have the communication skills needed to support you, e.g. British Sign Language, Signed Supported English, Makaton or other visual form of communication.The Independent Living team can support you with shopping, eating healthily, budgeting/managing your money, translating and understanding correspondence and dealing with it appropriately, paying bills, attending appointments, accessing community and social groups, developing social skills, travelling independently and accessing other services.RAD’s Life Skills Groups provide the perfect opportunity for you to meet other people and develop skills on a regular basis. RAD develop the sessions with the people who we support so that they are relevant and interesting. Activities at the group can include healthy living, community information and awareness, cooking, energy/utilities, food hygiene, safety at home and wellbeing. communitysupport@royaldeaf.org.uk RAD’s befriending service can be face-to-face, where a volunteer befriender visits you at home or accompanies you to a social event, by telephone or video call such as Skype or FaceTime.Befrienders can provide friendly conversation and companionship on a regular basis, helping with socialising, giving you information about local groups (e.g. Deaf Clubs), provide details of where you can get hearing aid support or help with other assistive equipment, encourage good health and wellbeing and discuss topics of interest. befriending@royaldeaf.org.uk
