About

Our mission is to inform, support and alleviate the isolation of anyone affected by a rare chromosome or gene disorder and to raise public awareness.

Unique offers contact with families with an affected member who has the same rare chromosome or single gene disorder, or who has similar symptoms or practical concerns, irrespective of specific chromosome disorder. It produces a comprehensive range of family-friendly, medically-verified information guides on a variety of rare chromosome and single gene disorders.

There is a network of local contacts worldwide and Unique promotes awareness of rare chromosome and single gene disorders to the general public and professionals. It co-ordinates families to assist in research and has very active, public and members-only social media resources, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc. It publishes a magazine twice a year.

Unique hosts occasional study weekends on individual disorders, family conference weekends and regional family events around the UK. Unique has over 24,300 affected families and many relevant professionals as members worldwide in 116 countries.

Target group

Parents, carers, grandparents of children affected by a rare chromosome or gene disorder.  Those with such disorders themselves, and professionals who support and work with persons with such disorders.
