  2. Review titled Excellent care.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I went to BMEC Eye Casualty on the advice of NHS Direct. The waiting time for triage was 1 to 2 hours which for our hardpressed NHS is pretty good. I was quickly diagnosed with a detached retina and this had been successfully operated on within 3 hours of diagnosis. All the staff were friendly, reassuring and efficient, especially my surgeon. Many thanks to a brilliant team!

  3. Review titled Great service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Suzanna Sparrow - Posted on 19 June 2023

My optician sent me to Birmingham Eye center, I arrived at 8.30 and expected a very long wait. Once registered, I was triaged, then I saw the Dr who explained everything that was being done, I  was then sent for a scan & the staff doing the scans were very pleasant and again explained what was happening.  Then I had to wait to see Dr. again which was only about 10 mins, the Dr explained what they were looking for on the scan & reassured me that I had nothing to worry about, I came out at 11.25, and I was only there for 3 hours. I was very impressed by the service I received.

  4. Review titled Security guards

Rated 2 stars out of 5

Visited the A&E at 8 am. Was unaware it was not open until 9am as Saturday, assumed the usual 8.30 am. Went around the side entrance and found some open doors Sat on a chair near A&E counter. Was actually feeling quite ill. Later a female employee approached me and requested I go outside. I replied it was cold and I felt ill.. Several people also came in and queued. One couple got me a chair to sit on in the queue which had formed and later 3 security guards stood in front of me in a very bullying manner. One was particularly loud, rude and nasty. I explained I was feeling ill. He just wasn't interested and not really listening but repeating himself and hovering over me in a bullying manner. The general public deserve respect and be put at ease.Wearing a uniform does not allow employees to behave in an unnecessarily bullying manner. I am a senior citizen and have never experienced such nasty behaviour by security staff ever..There was no sympathy that I was feeling unwell just a continuation of quoting the rules in a loud and threatening manner In fact one of the general public had previously asked if I wanted a drink of water. Why were the side doors open and why don't the employees have keys? What a shambles! I did not go outside but sat further back as I was still feeling ill near the entrance doors and the general public were moved outside. Should I experience similar treatment again at Midland Eye Hospital I will not hesitate to take the matter much further. These security guards need appropriate training to deal with the general public. It was almost as though I was in a third world country. It has been difficult to type this report as I am still not well.

Dear patient, I am very sorry to read about your experience at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and would not expect this sort of behaviour from our security team. Please could you share your details around when this happened with Mark Stankovich, Directorate General Manager for Portering and Security, by emailing him at mark.stankovich@nhs.net He will be able to investigate this further. Kind regards, Richard Beeken, Chief Executive.
