Review titled left me feeling helpless
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 29 December 2022
i’ve experienced mental illness since a young age and finally started talking at 12. after trying to get help private we finally turned to camhs and was told there was a long waiting list and my referal actually got lost in the system. fast forward to 14 after trying with camhs to get help for a while with no reply, i was rushed to hospital due to an od and after treatment and i was “medically fit” i spoke with camhs and was released. i’d heard from everyone i’d ever spoke to and all over social media how bad camhs was and was scared for my life when i knew i had to meet with them. the person i spoke with was nice, but the camhs side of her wasnt. a child ending up in hospital mainly as a cry for help and getting released with nothing but more trauma from before, then calling the crisis team and telling them that and then being told some useless thing to help cope with the fact i was unable to keep myslef alive much longer. camhs are thé most useless people i’ve ever spoke with. waiting list after waiting list and eventually giving the most basic useless information to mentally ill teenagers who are feeling hopeless already. we’re dying and we need help, and there’s no one who can do that for us because the system is terrible and kids are loosing their lives by the day. this needs to change.

Review titled No support for children or carers
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 15 March 2023
I brought my daughter to our local A&E because she did not wish to live anymore. I could not speak with her. This is due to 2 + years of waiting for neurodevelopmental conditions assessment which has never been picked up by professionals in school due her being compliant (masking) . We have managed since she began communicating. She did not understand toileting. She needed speech therapy. She isn’t too bad with these now but she cannot regulate her emotions. This plus teen hormones and bullying from other kids has now affected her mental health and myself and the rest of our home is experiencing nothing but hell on earth . I was told by GP they couldn’t help at all. School and camhs deal with it. Took her to A&E we were told nobody there to deal with the situation. Self referral to camhs and over 1 month later my daughter had an assessment (2nd time- first time last year she wasn’t bad enough) . Forward another month on and still no outcome from assessment. Daughter now harming herself and behaviour lot worse. Phoned up rude lady on phone telling me to stop talking because she isn’t trained . Asked for someone to call who can help. Was really nice and expressed importance of the circumstances. No one called. It’s a good job I am a patient parent but this is now affected my mental health because I don’t feel strong anymore . What is wrong with the world?

Review titled No help whatsoever
Rated 1 star out of 5

Been on waiting list since March 2022 for my daughter who has adhd and autism. Absolutely no contact from these whatsoever. Any time I attempt to make contact they push to one side and say no medication available. What kind of system is this failing our kids. Nearly 3 years and not one appointment!

Been contacted Camhs Rapid Response for an emergency/crisis situation... Weeks passed by and literally no help is available!!! Nurses, who took our calls showed no or very little sympathy and understanding, given wrong advice and multiple times have not returned our calls. We have been badly let down !!!

Review titled Camhs failed me
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Mia Baxter - Posted on 27 February 2023
I have been in camhs on and off for 2 or 3 years now, and I have now finally left. I have hated every moment. The people that treated me didn't talk to me as if I was a human. I was talked to and treated very rudely, and one staff member who I had twice made me cry multiple times from how rude she was. Everyone I saw seemed to have something against formal testing for literally anything, something that is really important to me because I struggle immensely in my daily life and just wanted to find out why. The disregard my counsellor had when I brought up the fact that I thought I was autistic was also very upsetting to me- and turns out I am autistic, she just had no idea what to look for. The sessions I had did nothing for me at all, and it was literally pointless stuff like picking out postcards I liked and moving them around on a piece of paper- rather then actually delving into my mental health issues which was why I was there in the first place. I have been told I am attention seeking, told to have a 'cup of tea' or try to 'meditate and have a bath' when I was on the verge of a severe breakdown. The emergency staff I've had also had no idea how to deal with me and so ended up being very rude or just sitting in silence staring at a wall because I didn't strike up conversation with them (I'd rather not talk about horses after what just happened, thanks!). After the worst possible point of my issues happened and I was sent in an ambulance to hospital, a blood test was run, and then I was literally sent home after no more then 2 hours. Didn't stay overnight, didn't have a mental health check up, nothing. The one time I did stay overnight in the hospital the lady (the one who made me cry multiple times on two different occasions) said to my face that I should have just gone home because I was using up a bed that somebody who actually needed it could have had. I honestly cannot believe what happened to me over the years I've been with camhs. There's not enough characters to go through everything, and I'm trying to be tactful with how I talk about it all. I have many friends who have been with them and we all had similar experiences- we actually talked in my special ed school about how poorly camhs treated all of us. This is not just my experience. Camhs has failed hundreds of children. I would never recommend using this service, and it needs to change asap before more harm is done! Hopefully this is all coherent.

I actually stopped going for ages because I found my school counsellor more useful :( I was having no therapy, and my Care Co-ordinator wasn't doing anything. I was going every week to repeat myself!!

Review titled Lacking empathy
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 10 November 2022
I was referred to camhs via the autism pathway when I was 14 after struggling for several months, I am now 17. I received conformation that I met the criteria to have an assessment, however after emailing them they said I would likely get an assessment after I have turned 18. My mental health greatly declined while on the waiting list so I made a second referral to the anxiety and depression pathway when I was 16. After emailing them they said that although I met the criteria I would not be able to receive any help from them because I would be over 18 by the time I reach the top of the waiting list and therefore too old to receive help from camhs. When I was 17 I had to go to a+e because of my mental health. I waited 16 hours to see the camhs crisis team, where they told me to refer myself to talking therapies (a service where they had previously told me not to refer myself to) then they discharged me. I made a referral to talking therapies however they currently have a 6 month waiting list. In the three and a bit years I have been on the camhs waiting lists the only contact I received was when I wanted to kill myself, with the advice being 'look somewhere else'.
