    We approached camhs for help with an eating disorder and found the whole experience prescriptive, disjointed up, unhelpful and with no desire to work alongside us. 8 weeks after starting the process were offered a course on "What is an eating disorder" after which my daughter had been excluded from school on their advice without consulting or agreeing with ourselves. Very focussed on your must eat, you must eat and if you don't then told off about it rather than encouraged. No help given on how to achieve this and took months before being offered any help on tackling the mental side. When excluded from school were given no notice, so school and ourselves were unable to prepare anything, with no risk assessment or health and safety checks carried out. Camhs are well meaning but treat you as a cog in the machine without understanding the individual. Very disappointed and would not recommend

    I understand that the Nhs and other branches are over worked enough as it is and I won’t deny the experience I’ve had has improved since last time which was approx in 2021 and I was with Camhs again in 2023, the worker I was paired with was very dismissive almost and compared me to others and said “I don’t think you have depression because you still go to school, people who actually have it don’t” when they previously mentioned that they could not diagnose or undiagnose, it’s fair if they think that way, but I don’t think people in a sound state of mind, stop working as well in schools; have trouble with eating, sleeping and taking care of basic needs such as showering. I have had time in the past where I took time off school because I felt like I couldn’t at all, felt too exhausted from just existing and feeling bad, like very very bad all the time, I had times where I stopped working at all in school because I felt like what was the point but all this worker said was that they think I just have mood issues and then said what use does a label give? for starters being diagnosed with something/using a label makes it easier to explain to people like other medical professionals, people in personal lives, etc. I don’t expect therapy or medication to work like magic and I know I diagnosis won’t make it better either, but it will help, especially in getting support as an adult, since these things don’t go away. I’ll be honest I just didn’t like the dismissive or comparative tone they used and wish they’d be a bit more considerate and less contradictory, they weren’t the worst worker I’ve had in all fairness, but it still wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience

    Gate keeping, my child has Adhd. He is unmedicated as the amount of hoops we had to jump through took 4 yrs to get a diagnosis. We are now in the “holding pattern” to get medication, which will happen ? We have to complete a parenting course which was held in the middle of the day and hour from where we live for 12 weeks, did we work? Then we had to attend a “what is Adhd course”, run by a person who could not read the PowerPoint. It was useless having attended lectures and read books clearly knew more than she did. Now we are “waiting” for the School to refer us after 12 weeks for medication. Yes you read that right not as parents or our GP. The school decides, meantime out child is escalating into a mess of anger and anxiety of untreated Adhd. Camhs don’t care

    After battling for the majority of his life, finally my son was heard! I only wish the journey to get to camhs had happened sooner. It's hard to put into words how amazing they were, my son felt listened to believed for the first time in his life. He was treated with kindness, understanding and compassion and for that I will always be grateful. Thank you to the amazing Psychiatrist and Specialist Nurse for making such a difference to my son's life.

    I came into the camhs eating disorder service around a year ago and would not be here without them! Camhs give their upmost support, always having you as their first thought. They always catered to what I needed and took the time to get to know me and how I could have as much support as possible. I could not thank this service enough.

    Apparently this service is underfunded which is why they're useless but I disagree. If you really want to help someone you would. The people referred here are children. You have a duty of care to look after them. Yet they have to wait 6 months on a waiting list to be told 'have you tried taking a bath' or 'have you tried drinking water'. I opened up fully about my neglectful parents to them and they just sent me back home to them knowing I was in danger when they could've called social service or the police

    My eldest daughter was referred in 2017 by her then school. They did not provide any support and she is actually worse off now and shes nearly 20 years old. My 14 year old was referred in 2022 for self harm by her doctor. Advise/tips but not support or treatment. They assigned a lady to my daughter when social services got involved in January 2023. The pady assigned to my daughter was clinically trained in self harm or low mood which is exactly what my daughter struggles with. The social worker fid wonder the same thing, why would someone not clinically trained be assigned to my daughter? Im still wsiting on a diagnosis of ADHD which has taken a year so far but thats only because social workers were chasing CAMHS otherwise we would be at the bottom of the pile. Im guessing the lady assigned to my daughter was some sort of support worker who we saw a couple of time in a year who just talked to my daughter. On the CAMHS website it states support/treatment involve a clinical psychologist, a crisis worker, family therapists, mental health practitioners, occupational therapists, primary mental health workers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, support workers and well being practitioners. So far we have seen a support worker and someone who assessed my daughter for treatment. Not ever anyone who can actually treat my daughter. So thats my 20 year old and my 13 year old who still both struggle with their mental health and self harm. They were both pulled from school because of lack of support for mental health/bullying. Anytime you mention to school or GP ect they always ask "is your child under CAMHS?" I'm starting to wonder if this "treatment" is some sort of non existent unicorn because i have seen no treatment and never been ecplained what treatment would include and help with and zero support. They sign post you to diffrwnt advise websites and unless your child has actually seriously attempted suicide they will give minimal support if that, although i do know of someone who didnt even get that. My 11 year old daughter who is transexual, going through school anxiety from bullying has started self harming. The school are aware but they offer no support as it is quite rare in school at this young age. She suggested talking to my GP about treatment from CAMHS, as you can imagine I did discuss my experience with CAMHS and how unhelpful they have been to my other daughters who are still suffering so I stated that I do not see the point in this non existent support or supposedly treatment. So now all my children suffer with low mood and self harm. If I had to hazard a guess it would be down to the lack of relationship or effort from their fathers and secondary school bullying. With the schools not addressing bullying properly and not being able to support mental health issues and CAMHS not being able to treat or support any issues i feel my children are at a loss in this world and I am scared for their future in this unsupportive world.

    My daughter has been receiving care from Camhs since she was very young. Our previous experience with Camhs was terrible. The entire service was disorganized and lacked any sense of care for the patient or the family. However, more recently (in the summer of 2023), we have noticed a significant improvement in the level of care and treatment. The team now appears to be more compassionate and responsive to our inquiries and they are keeping regular appointments. Whatever changes have been made, please continue with them. I hope this marks the beginning of positive changes in the future. Thank you.

    Daughter made a serious attempt on her life. Camhs visited her in hospital when I was absent. Daughter said she'd like me in the hospital during meeting but he told her he had another appointment so she needed to talk now. She said he answered her questions for her. I had a 5 minute safeguarding meeting which he told me to hide meds! Stating the obvious. Told us not to put her on antidepressants, camhs will visit in 8-12 weeks, she'll be 18 in the new year then she will be discarded. His attitude was dismissive and a total waste of time.

    I have never known anything like it. My daughter is very complex, she has a brain injury and mental health is a massive problem for her. The things she experiences are not nice (I won't go into too much detail) self harm, hearing voices, hallucinations etc. We were referred to Camhs by my daughters gp in 2012 Camhs called me, asked me a few questions and then decided that she was safe with me so they wouldn't see her or help. Anyway..it got too much for us all, I had to contact our MP to help us to get help from them. He managed to get us help and all they said is that she has anxiety. I have an anxiety disorder and never experienced what my daughter does, it is not anxiety. She was seen a few times but because she missed a couple of appointments due to pain ( currently going through tests to diagnose cerebral palsy) they said they would no longer see us and to contact them when she has pain under control. Our pediatrician has sent camhs a letter in July asking for us to get help again as my daughters mental health has deteriorated again. We now won't be seen until December..over 4 months after she was reffered. The service is absolutely disgusting! No support whatsoever at a time when children are struggling more than ever. I will be going back to the MP and I will be looking into other routes to get this service sorted out! I can see this sort of thing happens often and it needs to stop!!
