  1. Review titled Problems but just reinfoced how good they are

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 02 June 2023

I'd had both eyes operated on and the results and experience were all positive. Unfortunately I was one of the patients whose lens clouded up. After a slick examination I was booked in for a laser blast which was equally slick and one eye is now perfect again. It's the other one next week. Only complaint is that they can't do them both at once. Keep up the great service and good work.

  3. Review titled Excellent experience.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Malcolm Cowie - Posted on 28 June 2023

I had cataract operations in March and June 2023 and can wholeheartedly endorse all the favourable comments in the previous 5 Star reviews. After the first operation I still had some inflamation after two weeks of drops but I was promptly seen and prescribed further drops which were soon effective. The only recommendation I would make is to suggest more optometrists are needed for the review visits. Patients are quickly passed through the pre-assessment stages but then have to wait a long time to be seen by one of the two optometrists. Otherwise the whole experience and the effectiveness of the treatment were excellent.

  4. Review titled Chalk and Cheese

I had two cataract operations in 6 weeka at Spamedica at Chapeltown. The two operations could not have been more different. The first time everything went brilliantly, the surgery was performed painlessly, speedily and successfully. Throughout the procedure I felt confident that I was in highly skilled hands. The second operation was a very unpleasant experience. I am being generous when describing the surgeon's manner as being extremely brusque and abrasive verging on antagonistic with no feeling of empathy. The procedure was painful at times and after a few minutes I began to feel very vulnerable. If this had been my first experience I doubt if I would have returned for a second time. For both operations the pre and post operation staff were friendly and helpful.

  6. Review titled Excellent service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I visited here on Thursday for an assessment for the YAG procedure, I was absolutely amazed to be offered an appointment for the following day. The service from reception through to all procedures was 1st Class and carried out in a careful manner by very friendly courteous staff. Even though it was an eighty mile round trip I now have perfect vision and can carry on doing the things I have not been able to do.

  7. Review titled rude surgeon, un-informed consent & out of date booklet

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Dr Mike Tomson - Posted on 08 June 2023

My surgeon was abrupt, repeatedly telling me that I was not looking in the right place or needed to relax my shoulders/ open both eyes / look into the (extremely bright) light. At no point did he tell me I was looking in the right place, or keeping my eye open well (though as the surgery was done within minutes I must have got it right some of the time) At no point did he explain what he was about to do before doing it or include me in the operation on my eye. All this is in significant contrast to my experience of having a recent retinal eye operation. He talked, whilst operating on me, to the nurse assistant about whether she could resolve an error whereby he was recorded as having operated on both eyes of two patients the previous Friday. Hearing about an error and the day it was done is not an appropriate way to talk during an operation with an awake patient. I was offered no time to talk with the prescribing clinician about the suggested extra drops and antiviral medication that I was discharged with (which makes a nonsense of informed consent). The very nice and keen to help discharging nurse told me that the drops I was given were to control infection whereas in reality one of the routine ones is a steroid (which if anything increases risk of infection though reduces inflammation) and the other was a non steroidal anti inflammatory. She did not know that 'Acular' is Ketorolac and insisted that the Acular was the real name when I asked her about the drug. I was given no explanation about why I was prescribed chloramphenicol. All members of staff ( apart from the surgeon) were friendly and interested. During my preparatory visit a month or less earlier I had asked about the advantages and disadvantages of different types / strengths of lens replacement given that I only needed one eye operating on but need glasses for the other eye. No on line resources or written resources were advised for enabling patients to make informed decisions and the mantra "you can discuss this with the surgeon" which I was offered is not compliant with the British supreme court judgement (Montgomery 2015) on informed consent. "Patients must be advised about their treatment options and the risks associated with each option so that they can make informed decisions" as I was not discussing it with the surgeon but an optometrist/ dispensing optician and as they were not able to answer my questions. This issues could be solved as an algorithm could be written for the choices of iol patients make Finally the risks of post operative issues with the cataract op written down in the booklet supplied and the risks given verbally were substantially different. I was informed that the verbal ones were more up to date but they were continuing to issue the old information in printed booklets. This does not seem to be appropriate. Finally staff followed protocols and used gloves to put in eye drops. There is no infection control justification for this = Plastic pollution.

The atmosphere was calm, peaceful, reassuring and friendly .The cataract operation was swift and painless. My early apprehension was completely unnecessary. My vision is wonderfully improved and I am looking forward impatiently to having my other eye operated on.

  10. Review titled Very Efficient Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Lynne - Posted on 27 May 2023

From the short waiting times to the leaving instructions this organisation has everything sorted. All the staff are pleasant and happy to explain. I’ve now had both eye cataracts done within 7 weeks. Just wish I had discussed having my full vision sorted and maybe I wouldn’t have to wear readers.
