Review titled Repeated cancellation of Blood test
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Michael Sanders - Posted on 04 October 2024
I was requested by the clinician to have a test of my blood for iron deficiency. I have had my appointments cancelled ,one 35 minutes before it was due. The Staff appologised debut were only able to make a further later appointment. Earlier I had a PSA test and was told the iron test could be done at the same time. On arrival with the phlebotomist I was told this was not the case.. when I visited a doctor my appointment was 35 minutes late after the due time. What is happening?

Thank you for giving us your feedback, we apologise for the inconvenience you have experienced in your appointments being cancelled, we have been struggling with staff sickness over the past month or so and have had to cancel clinics last minute when we have been informed. Unfortunately due to the nature of some appointments, clinics can run late as the clinician maybe dealing with an emergency or needing to give extra time to a patient where needed, we appreciate this can be frustrating for patients, but we are trying to offer the best, safe service to our patients. Thank you again for providing your feedback as we use it to help review our processes.

Review titled Good in some areas poor in others

Had blood test couple months ago results indicated second blood test needed, doctor advised follow up test in one month, tried to book blood test over three weeks, only to be told each time no appointments as phlebotomy off sick. If it was a doctor down they would have engaged locum to cover, as it is I have to travel to Stafford or stoke on trent just to have blood taken.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback, we are sorry regarding the lack of phlebotomy appointments, we have struggled for over a month with staff sickness. We have had a locum Phlebotomist in to help cover, but availability is very restricted and cannot cover the large amounts of blood tests we usually offer as a practice. We have also struggled with recruitment, but have had a new Phlebotomist start with us this week, once they have completed their induction with us, they will be helping re-implement some blood appointments. Hopefully you will see an improvement in the coming weeks.

Review titled Good access to different services
Rated 4 stars out of 5

Unfortunately this year I have had cause to use the practices services for various annoying (and thankfully minor) issues. The new telephone system is much improved and most of the (many) staff at all levels at the practice are polite and welcoming. We are fortunate at this practice to have various ancillary services that not all medical practices have: for example, minor surgery and physiotherapy, which I have recently experienced. The waiting time for these two services is excellent, and thanks must go to these providers for their advice and referrals.

Review titled Unsafe practice
Rated 1 star out of 5

I'm really concerned that this surgery are using non clinical staff to triage symptoms. I contacted the surgery with an ongoing fever which was getting worse and feeling unwell. The receptionist advised this was not an emergency because the fever had been ongoing so would not give me a same day appointment although they were available. This was despite me begging and pleading that I felt unwell and something was wrong. I went to hospital and have since been diagnosed with a water infection requiring IV antibiotics. The practice is very unsafe and I will be reporting this to the cqc.

We are sorry to hear you have felt the need to post this. We are also glad you actually went to A&E as it seems your need was that of hospital care as you needed IV antibiotics, something we cannot provide in General Practice. No non-clinical staff are involved in triage. Our triage staff are currently Advanced Clinical Practitioners, GPs, Nurse Prescribers and other clinical staff. If a receptionists has indeed done something outside of their remit then we would like to investigate this further and also look at their training needs. We would need to listen to the call and assess the matter in detail. Please email in your details, the number your called from and the time of the call. If you know the name of the receptionist that you spoke to, that would also be incredibly helpful. We assure you we will address the matter once we are aware of who you interacted with. It is possible that the receptionist had been advised by a clinician but we cannot say unless we have the details. We will update this reply to state you have provided the information once we have received it. Once again we are sorry to hear that you have had to post a concern on here rather than contacting us directly.

Review titled Seeing regular doctor
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Alan Whitehouse - Posted on 01 December 2023
I have been registered with this surgery for just over twelve months and have never been more disapointed with a surgery in my life. My biggest complaint ( one of many ) is :- I have visited the surgery about 10 times and never seen the same doctor twice and each time I have to go through my problem again and again as the doctor has not read my notes. Many times I get a different diagnosis. I am a volunteen driver and take many people to hospital and most people want to moan about the Brewood surgery but will not complain as they mainly in their 80's and don't know how to. When are we going to get regular doctors at this surgery ??????

Dear Mr Whitehouse, Thank you for your comments. Your feedback has been noted. We are sorry to hear that you feel you have experienced a poor service. Clinicians have to prioritise what they can do in a 10 minute appointment, and it is impossible to review all the notes of any patient in the time available. In a 10 minute appointment, around 7 minutes of contact time with yourself makes the bulk of the appointment, 2-3 minutes to write up notes etc. This leaves little time to read all your notes. Most clinicians will use the first minute or so to look at your notes, your summary and read the last consult or two and call you in. However, we accept that in an ideal world the clinician would have read all of your notes and letters etc but this requires unlimited time and unlimited clinicians and unlimited space to house the clinicians. Clinical opinions also build and change over time and so diagnoses may be different for different symptoms patterns. We would prefer to discuss your clinical concerns directly and suggest you contact us directly about your diagnoses. It would seem that there is mismatch in what you have you stated in terms of numbers and what we believe to be correct. This factual inconsistency is concerning and would like your written permission to state what we believe to be correct publically as what you state does not match with our records. We actually do have regular doctors at this surgery. However, Doctors are not the only clinicians we have. As per national direction of travel additional roles are doing a large bulk of the work due to shortages of doctors in general, ultimately supervised by a GP. We have long serving GPs, ACPs, Nurse, Nurse Prescriber, HCAs, MSKP, UCPs etc all of whom regularly work at the surgery. Of note is that we have struggled to recruit GPs despite adverts being out. Untrue comments suggesting we do not have regular doctors do not help in recruitment. You may feel that you should see a GP, and only a specific GP, however this is impractical as a GP could be on leave or not work a particular day and indeed the GP may be needed to see more complex cases whereas your conditions could be managed by an alternate health care worker with GP input if required. I assure you however, that we have been working on an improved triage model and will be streamlining access to the service whereby patients will get the right appointment to see the right person/right type of clinician for their condition. Once in place, if your condition warrants seeing a GP and indeed a specific GP, then you will get that appointment. On behalf of The Senior Management Team

Review titled Pretty abysmal

Some recent examples of how bad this medical practice is: - Waited for over 20 mins on hold even though I was caller number 1 the whole time. - Getting a repeat prescription takes 3 days to a week even when marked urgent. A carer visited and called the surgery to check the status of the prescription and was told it would be processed same day (it wasn’t) and we would get a call when it was ready (we did not). - Did not return multiple calls for clarification on a referral. - Have yet to get a Dr visit a month after being discharged from hospital despite being completely housebound with chronic health issues - they send a paramedic instead. Not sure if the issue is too many (older) patients for the number of doctors, the doctors or the office staff, but the end result is that the level of service is inadequate.

Review titled Not so great practice

When I called to try and make an appointment with a doctor instead of being asked my name, very abruptly I was asked for my date of birth. After being fobbed off at first to see a nurse I did eventually get an appointment but I was unable to finish my conversation as she cut me off. I would like an explanation as to why there is no decent communication skills between patients and your staff. It is a shame that also there is no continuity in seeing the same doctor for follow up appointments if a further appointment is needed inevitably you cannot see the same g.p. As seen previously so the symptoms have to be gone through again and in some cases a different diagnosis is given, this is not good for patient peace of mind. I would appreciate some comments on this and also make sure your staff are trained in good communication skills as sometime tact and empathy is required. Many thanks
