  1. Review titled Disappointing

Rated 2 stars out of 5

So disappointed with Oakham surgery for a simple urgent blood test through district nurses, yet 3 times I have chased this up for my mom and the surgery haven’t processed the forms. Simply not good enough received an apology from a gp your processes need seriously looking at right now you are failing. You cannot get an appointment, it takes up to 45 minutes on the phone to queue to be told there aren’t any. Test results are back yet you cannot discuss them until a dr has seen them I get that, but surely if treatment is required shouldn’t these test results be prioritised, so over a 3 day period my mom had an infection that she needed treatment for, with a four day wait for the results that’s over a week with an infection, although I understand the pressure GPS are under in my opinion it’s the processes that need looking at urgently.

  2. Review titled Uncaring and unhelpful

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Marilyn Cliff - Posted on 22 June 2023

I visited Oakham surgery to ask for a repeat prescription of some painkillers I had in May last year for osteoarthritis which I have in both hips. I was told as it had been over a year since I had them I would need to make an appointment to consult with a doctor. I said that it was impossible to get an appointment as I had tried phoning and online several times but never any available. The receptionist then said 'the best way is to queue up outside before 8am.' As I am in my mid 70's & recently had one hip replacement but still have limited mobility, I can't do this. I asked if she could not explain my request to a doctor but she said she couldn't. I have now used all my painkillers from my GP and some given from the hospital following my hip replacement so what do I do now? Suffer in silence I suppose as this practice doesn't care or want to help.

  3. Review titled Rubbish service

If you call to get an appointment you end up in extremely long queue only to be finally told no appointments left. Advised to use the new online service which at 1 minute past 8 says requests are full. Total joke. Advised by urgent care centre that my blood pressure needs checking by doctor.

  4. Review titled Avoid at all costs

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Hayley - Posted on 20 March 2023

Been ringing for appointments for various things the past couple of years, and never able to get one. Ring up just before 8 and repeat until phone lines are open, and you end up at the end of a long queue (70s, 80s, 90s). Never get an appointment, just get told you’ll need to call 111 and maybe they’ll be able to give you an appointment as the doctors have some saved for them? Atrocious place, not been able to see my doctor in years and have to go and sit for 6 hours in A&E instead as all the local walk ins are closed down. This GP surgery is so understaffed, I’m surprised they’re accepting new patients as they can’t see the ones they currently have!

  5. Review titled Struggling

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Chris - Posted on 09 March 2023

I had a telephone call with a Dr yesterday who was attentive, sympathetic and very helpful with suggestions as to how I could move forward with my condition. If I were to rate that interaction it would be five out of 5. I have needed to speak to front of house staff about various things and I have always found them to be polite and helpful, so another 5 out of 5. These are the extremely positive aspects of the surgery, and not to be undervalued, however, the process of getting to speak with, or see a Dr is almost always very stressful. I don’t know if the anima system isn’t working properly but I have never been able to reach a Dr in this way. I am more concerned now because of a recent diagnosis, whereby, I require medical assistance quite quickly if I get sn infection. The last infection I had required me to call the specialist hospital team in order to get the antibiotics that I needed. It seems to me that the surgery is really struggling with patient demand and that really worries me.

  6. Review titled Impossible to get an appointment

It is virtually impossible to get an appointment, and when you do manage to get confirmation online of a telephone consultation appointment, the DR doesn’t call you

Can’t get an appointment by phone or by the new anima system, impossible to get seen by a doctor, staff are really unhelpful, anima system is too long by the time you get to the end of the questionnaire it’s timed you out and no appointments are left! It’s just an absolute joke

  8. Review titled This used to be a great GP practice

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 31 October 2022

This surgery used to be absolutely brilliant and in the almost 40 years I have been registered with the surgery I would have highly recommended it to anyone. However, it is now unrecognisable from the practice it once was. I am a massive supporter of our NHS and fully understand that due to underfunding, it is not easy for GP surgeries etc. in the current climate. However, the system is just not working. Even trying to call at 8.00 a.m. when the lines open will find you in a massively long queue. The recording will advise you to register and use the new Anima automated system. I used it a few weeks ago. It was brilliant and I couldn't believe I had a message inviting me to a face to face appointment within minutes of sending the message. Try this now and it advises the system is not taking any more messages due to demand. So I cannot use the new system I have been encouraged to register with and use and I cannot easily contact the surgery via telephone. I am currently in a queue of 30 (this is at 4.30 p.m.). It has reduced by 6 people in 17 minutes so far. Its very worrying to think that many people will simply give up and not follow up health concerns, which could then potentially become emergencies and place extra pressure on A and E departments etc. not to mention the health and well being of the patients registered with the surgery.

  9. Review titled Abysmal.

Rated 1 star out of 5

    by A. Hughes - Posted on 19 December 2022

The new 'Anima' contact system was promoted by the surgery on 12th Sept 2022 and I have tried, since that date, to register without any success whatsoever until today, 19th Dec. Previously I have visited the surgery a number of times and even contacted a practice manager but the receptionists simply did not know how to rectify the problem and although the practice manager did try to help, a doctor (?) provided a texted link that simply put me back to the beginning and I ended up going round and round and getting absolutely nowhere. It appears to me that the receptionists generally don't have the training or skills necessary for the much vaunted 'Anima System', however, the receptionist today was a different matter altogether. She initiated a simple operation on her computer, gave me some guidance and on my return home, hey presto, I appear to be now registered on the 'Anima System' for what good it may or may not be. Congratulations to her. The remaining parts of this practice are, however a completely different story as already enumerated by the majority of reviews on these pages. This practice was exemplary until about 3 or 4 years ago but has deteriorated beyond belief since then. It seems to me that the practice is now simply geared up to be a money making system with, in my opinion, far more registered patients than they they can effectively deal with although, in fairness, if you are fortunate enough to actually meet up with a doctor, they are usually pretty good and caring, but still limited by the constraints of the practice and an overloaded system. For example, I was recently put on a medication which it is apparently dangerous to stop taking. The medication was for one month and when I tried to renew was told by the pharmacy that it was not on repeat so I should visit the surgery and arrange a new prescription. I did this today but was told by the receptionist that I would have to either (A) Visit the surgery at 8 a.m. or (B) Request it using the Anima system, assuming that it can be accessed at 8 a.m. Given that it is dangerous to suddenly stop taking this medication it puts me in a rather difficult position as I now entirely depend on the practice system working flawlessly. I have a telephone appointment arranged with the prescribing doctor for this Thursday and my tablets end that same day, so if the doctor fails to phone, or if I am taken ill in the meantime, then I am at the mercy of a not very effective medical practice. Wait and see.
