Review titled Lovely staff but poor admin and communication
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Stella Saunders - Posted on 27 November 2024
I had an appointment for cataract surgery at Andover Hospital on 25.11.24 after an initial appointment with a consultant at Winchester Hospital and pre-op assessment there. The admission letter (sent by post) gave me an admission time of 12.30 pm Andover Hospital is in an inconvénient location 20 miles from home with no public transport available from our home so as I had been told not to drive myself, my husband drove me there despite suffering spinal pain (he has major spinal surgery scheduled tomorrow in Southampton). I had asked at my assessment appointment how long he might have to wait for me and was told 3 hours max but probably much less. We arrived at 12.00 at Andover Hospital because of concern about potential traffic delays en route. Nobody was at the Day Surgery Unit reception and no staff who were able to check patients in appeared until after 12.30, by which time the small waiting area was full. All five cataract surgery patients were later taken together to a waiting area outside the operating theatre to have our details checked and confirmed, eye drops applied, and consent forms signed. I was the last patient to be operated on, not being taken into theatre until about 5 pm. By this time I was extremely tired of sitting in the same chair for four and a half hours and was thirsty and hungry since the instructions in the booklet I had been given at RHCH had said that on the morning of the operation I should have only a light breakfast and a drink, in case sedation was needed. I had thus had no food or drink since 9.30 am. If I had had any idea that we would not be leaving the hospital until almost 6 pm, I would have asked my husband to leave me there at 12.30, go home, and return much later. As it was, because we had no idea how long the wait might be, he waited for me in Peaches cafe, far from ideal for his spinal problems, but we are grateful that he was allowed to continue sitting there after the cafe stopped serving. The lady sitting next to me waiting for surgery had come even further than we had and said that at her previous appointment she’d had to wait six hours, as did her husband who was driving her. While I very much appreciate the care of the clinical staff, with special thanks to the nurse who discharged me, I do not understand why the organisation and communication by hospital administration is so poor and inefficient. It must have been known that I was last on the list and would have a long wait so why could not I have been told this on arrival so my husband could have gone home instead of waiting in discomfort for hours? Also, I find it incredible that in 2024 appointments for Andover hospital are only sent by post, whereas Winchester Hospital and my general medical practice routinely communicate by text, email and the NHS app. The waste of scarce NHS resources and inefficiency involved in sending out letters is alarming especially given that Andover is in the same Hospital Trust.

Review titled Xray report or lack of
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Terri - Posted on 18 October 2024
I had an xray at Andover hospital 8 October, this all went ok, staff nice, explain everything well, however trying to get the results/report is another thing, try to call and find out what is delay, and not once was the phone answered, eventually nearly 3 weeks later, phoned Winchester hospital to see if they could help and they did actualy answer the phone and said sorry but that the consultants had not dodlne the report and that sorry again they did not know when the consultants would do the report, meanwhile I am in pain and no-one can do anything to help as we are still waiting for the report, we are all busy in our daily jobs but we still have to do our jobs.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of our services, I am sorry to hear that this was not a positive experience for you. I can understand how frustrating it must be to have an appointment at the minor injury unit and then have a call advising you to go to A&E. I can only assume that further review of your needs meant that the minor injury unit might not be able to care for you, and the team would have wanted to save you a wasted journey. But clearly this wasn’t well communicated, and it would have been much better if that had been clear from the outset rather than a change in plan during the day. Please do get in contact with our PALS and Complaints Team so that we can follow up with you personally and can address the situation with those responsible. PALS can be contacted at PALSandcomplaints@hhft.nhs.uk or 01256 486766. Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experience. Kind regards Alex Whitfield Chief Executive

Review titled Amazing CT scan team
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Tom Hacking - Posted on 21 June 2024
I've had quite a few CT scans in my life, mostly in different hospitals in Hampshire. Recently I went for a scan in the Andover hospital and it was by some way the most warm and friendly scan experience. The staff were engaging and friendly. They operat in temporary accommodation which they managed to make into a warm and relaxing and stress reducing environment. They are, in my view, a shining representation of the best on the NHS.

On the 8.6.24 which was a Saturday I was meant to be having a blood test which I booked on line on my doctors advice. I got to the hospital only to find it all closed. Now if the hospital wasn't open on this day why was I allowed to book it and sent a reminder day before by text.

Review titled Minor Injuries
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Jenny - Posted on 05 April 2024
I went to minor injuries to get my foot checked over as I injured it at work. I was the only patient waiting in the waiting room and was seen pretty quickly. I was then sent for an xray which i was only waiting 30 minutes for and then was sent back to minor injuries to discuss results. When shown my xray, there was a very clear break in the base of my fifth metatarsal and the staff member said it didn’t look particularly new. She mentioned that my foot was also likely to be sprained. I was and still am in severe pain and dispite there being a broken bone in my foot and a possible sprain I wasn’t given anything to support/protect or heal this. I was just sent away being told to rest, ice and elevate and that it should heal in 6-8 weeks. There is absolutely no evidence of me attending minor injuries in my records and the Xray wasn’t sent to my GP. The next day I rang my GP who straight away referred me to an orthopaedic and confirmed I should have been given a walking boot or similar.

Review titled What a wonderful hospital
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 11 April 2024
I live the other side of Southampton and Andover was the quickest available appointment available. Parking was easy. Little cafe cheap and had wonderful friendly staff. I attended the Physio dept and the person I saw showed great care and empathy. Actually listened to what I said and treated me as an individual. Would definitely choose the 33 mile journey again if the need arose

I had an Endoscopy this week in Dsy Care. The Staff were absolutely amazing, so professional, kind and reassuring, as I was very anxious regarding the procedure. They could not have done more to reassure me. Everything went really well. I cannot thank the wonderful staff enough.

Review titled Awful
Rated 2 stars out of 5

I had an appointment at the ultrasound department in Andover at the weekend. On arrival, having not received a letter, it was very unclear about where to go as the main entrance was shut and no one was around. I had to call another department to direct me to it. I then arrived and still had no idea if I was in the right place. I then had to give my name in the open plan seating area in order to check in. As I went into the room I barely got acknowledge and was told to go empty my bladder, that was fine but still not a great service. No introductions or anything, their English seemed minimal at this point. I came back from the toilet and as I was entering the room for the ultrasound a cat was leaving the room. I asked why a cat was there and they just shrugged their shoulders. I’m not joking or delusional , this actually happened. I sat on the bed to change as asked and still hadn’t had any introductions. On the scanner monitor screen was a long list of patient names, nhs numbers and their scan details. Finally the scanner came and introduced herself and completed the procedure which was fine. I feel that this should be brought to the nhs attention room as a health risk or data protection breach.
