  1. Review titled A practice that is overwhelmed

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 20 May 2023

I visited the accident & emergency after calling 111 and instructed to go. I got to the hospital at 8.30pm and saw a gp at 5.30am the next morning. I was at risk of heart attack and blood pressure of 190/113 but that was not deemed urgent so bumped to the back of the q. Needless to say I was frustrated, wanted to leave and as I was looking around I could see that everyone there was in the same boat. This was the result of a broken Nhs. I have to say that when I saw the Doctor he was thorough, his examination was brilliant and I cannot complain about the service once I received it. I think the a&e should start operating on a ticket basis. Most patients there lived locally. If I came in registered and was given the option to say wait for a call to come back in at 5.30am I would have been less stressed, I could have rested etc...Something must be dome to help this system.

Dear reviewer, we're very sorry to read that you had such a long wait in our emergency department recently, having been advised to attend the department by 111. We do continue to see very high numbers of patients, which are seen in order of clinical priority, but we also appreciate the impact this has on patients and their loved-ones and this is not the experience we would wish for our patients. We have forwarded your comments to management but if you would like to discuss your experience further, we recommend speaking to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. Apologies again for your poor experience. Kind regards, the patient experience team.

  2. Review titled Terrible Hospital

Rated 1 star out of 5

It is a terrible department. There were no doctors. My daughter was suffering from pain in her ears for more than four hours but we were still asked to wait for the doctor to visit her. After waiting for more than four hours I noticed that there were no doctors. There were only nurses in the department and when I was going out of the department after four hours, they even didn’t try to prevent us from leaving. That means that my daughter’s illness was not important for them at all. I also have to mention that the nurses were very lazy and rude and not doing anything special at all. All the time they were sitting by the computers and doing nothing. I never recommend this hospital.

  3. Review titled Caring staff and smooth process

Rated 5 stars out of 5

A huge thank you to all the staff on the early morning shift on 14th April 2023. I had acute conjunctivitis and the doctor who examined me was so patient, calm and made me feel very reassured I was going to be okay and made me feel at ease. Although I can’t name the doctor here, I really appreciate the support! The whole experience in an and e was smooth and the staff managed our expectations of wait times well. Thank you again

I phoned a couple of times during the day for an update (which I was given and told to call again later) Ive been listening to the phone ringing now for last 20 minutes as no one is answering. My mum is 88, I live in Portugal so need to speak to someone. There should be someone available to answer phone at all times

Dear reviewer, we're very sorry to read that you were unable to get through to our emergency department and had waited 20 mins at a time, to no avail. We especially appreciate that this was a difficult time and that being so far away meant you were reliant on being able to speak to one of the team on the phone. We've passed on your comment to management who have expressed their apologies and explained that due to high demands on the department, there may be a delay in answering telephones, but they will communicate your experience to their teams in the emergency department. If you would like to discuss this more, we recommend speaking to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), to have them look into this for you. PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. Apologies again for your poor experience and we send you and your mother our best wishes, the patient experience team.

  6. Review titled Pointless

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 18 May 2023

Attended 3 times with vaginal bleeding. They just did a urine and blood test. I was then sent home with some medication, which didn't work. First time they said that the gynaecologist had refused to see me (!), second time that they don't have an ultrasound machine (an entire hospital without an ultrasound machine...), and the third time that my problem had now become long-term and I should go to the GP. They basically refused to treat me. Apparently, a woman my age shouldn't expect any better. Of course, it goes without saying that a GP cannot deal with such a situation, and is not qualified to do so. As indeed their own GPs in A&E had failed to provide effective treatment. Next day the bleeding got into a super heavy flow. 111 said that they are sending an ambulance (from Barnet General). Then they called to say, since the ambulance is too busy can I go to A&E instead? Hell, no, I can't go anywhere, that's why I am calling you. I am a prisoner without a life because you are not treating me. You just take the NHS tax from my salary without asking me and then you neglect my health. While I was being sent away without any treatment I could see that male patients were being referred for emergency scans. After I got the bleeding under some control on my own and without the help of anyone here, I flew to Greece to see a gynaecologist urgently privately. He offered to see me and operate at a very short notice after hearing that I'd been bleeding for 2 months non-stop. That is considered an emergency... I was seen and operated on the same day. The ultrasound took 2 minutes and the operation 15... Apparently, the bleeding would have carried on for a year at least without the op. I got no help and no patient care here. I got treated like a nuisance and like a second-rate patient just for being a woman. The medication prescribed made things worse in the long term. It was only good enough to allow me to board a flight safely to go and see a proper doctor away from Barnet General. There was no interest in my quality of life or well-being. Your doctors are rude and lazy. My best advice to anyone is to not bother with this A&E Department at all. This department here is not up to modern medical standard. It only wastes your time and delays you going to someone that is actually going to treat you. The main objective of Barnet General A&E doctors is to keep their workload down without any interest for the outlook for the patients. They are happy for you to suffer and let your life bleed out of you so that they don't have to do anything about it. They told me they only do blood transfusions and resuscitation. They just don't want you dying on their premises. They don't care if you do in the next hour after you have left the hospital. If it hadn't been for the false hope of treatment here I would have got it much earlier privately. So, use my experience to your own benefit. The best thing that can happen to Barnet General A&E is to close it down.

  7. Review titled Thankful is an understatement

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by darren peter hughes - Posted on 05 April 2023

Having arrived at A&E in a quite sad and painful state it was evident that the department as a whole was quite literally bursting at the seems. It was after 10pm on a Thursday night and the estimated waiting times went from 6hrs initially, steadily rising throughout the night and early morning to an eventual 16hrs waiting time. Due to the nature of the medical condition I found myself in I was assessed in triage after 1.5hours and then waited about another 12 hours to be assessed again then but at every touch point with all of the pressure the whole department and site was obviously under at this time. The attention and attentive compassion and care and diligence and utterly overwhelming support and professional as well as personal treatment and duty that I was privileged to receive was and is faultless and I shall always and forever feel not just merely thankful!! But truly blessed & fortunate to not only be able to access and encounter such medical professionals at a site that is clean and modern and welcoming but it more than that! Much more! It’s how each department works together to truly help and heal and achieve everything possible and then some for me myself and for all of us who come to call on their care at the most painful or difficult of times. Everything that is right with our nation and our nhs is on display at Barnet Hospital and as members of the public and civilians trying our best to get through these tougher times it’s experiences like the treatment and care I encountered that makes life much less arduous and hurtful and I just wish there were more that I could do to show thanks and appreciation and admiration for you all other than just posting a review or a few thoughts or words because You are all truly precious and priceless and I’m just soo Thankful just so thankful for the NHS and for all of you

  10. Review titled Poor

Rated 1 star out of 5

by An 85 year old - Posted on 21 April 2023

After being sent to A&E with a letter from a GP with my elderly mother who is suffering from depression and dementia with a suspected overdose we were left for 2 hours in the waiting room before her bloods and ECG were done then she was left in a chair for another 3 hours before a doctor saw her (I wasn't allowed to stay with her). Once the doctor had seen her and said that she would be admitted I left as I was not allowed to be with her. I called at 8am my mother was still in A&E!! And that was where she stayed until 3pm. The whole system in A&E is all wrong and needs to be addressed.
