  1. Review titled A Tale of Two Cities: Cardiology & Transport

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 26 October 2023

I visited Cardiac Rehabilitation today. 26th October. As usual the team were wonderful and sensitive to people's needs and capacities. Afterwards, the ward clerk booked my transport (Non-Emergency Patient Transport) and I waited to go home. And waited. And waited. Staff who had seen me waiting earlier looked surprised to see me still there. A patient offered to buy me a sandwich. This was a close repetition of an earlier transport event when the site manager removed me from waiting near Reception and took me to a ward where I could warm up. (Thank you. I'm still grateful) I am not allowed to mention names on this review which is a pity because the ward clerk did so well to arrange new transport, chase it up, and keep an eye on the time (which was still ticking by). The Driver had gone to the wrong place, the Cardiology Ward rather than the Cardiology Department but didn't think to check on 'the other one'. The ward clerk noticed how long I was waiting and started chasing the booking. It hadn't been aborted but it had not been restarted, which seems to be a common occurrence in my experience. In the meantime, a driver, a good fellow whose name I would like to add had heard about a patient who had been waiting for hours and put two and two together. Common sense and sense of care for patients led him to where I was waiting. In my dealings with healthcare in Barnet Hospital, staff such as the therapists, doctors and nurses (with one exception...there's always one...) have been marvellous and I am on the road to better health. I had put in a previous complaint to do with hospital transport and that has been taken seriously -- kudos to those on that team. However, the whole system of bookings seems to need a complete overhaul. They don't seem to have learned from the former mistake despite a letter from senior management. Plus, on one booking I was deemed eligible for transport but a second (accidental) booking on the same trip came up as not eligible. That is very telling. That points to inaccurate questioning for eligibility that doesn't reflect the true and realistic state of a patient's condition. It makes the decision-making seem arbitrary, not in keeping with common sense, nor the guidance offered by senior managers. Please, please, please will somebody get a grip. The clinical staff are doing their best, the ward clerk did his best, but what's the point if these transport experiences leave my health worse for wear?

Dear reviewer, thank you for your review of the cardiac rehab team and patient transport. Firstly, we're glad to read that your care in cardiac rehab was sensitive to patient's needs and that you were satisfied with your experience here. We are sorry to see however that you were left waiting for hours for patient transport after confusion about where they were to pick you up from. We're glad to see that the ward clerk chased this up for you and that the site manager moved you somewhere warmer to wait, but we would recommend contacting our Patient Advice and Liaison Service about your experience (including the eligibility criteria issue) if you haven't already. PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. In the meantime, we send our apologies for this poor experience and our best wishes. The patient experience team.

  2. Review titled Very positive experience

by BabySilvaAna - Posted on 29 September 2023

I gave birth two weeks ago after a long and painful process and once I needed an induction. I was very scared and didn't know what to expect. On the first night I found a fantastic midwife who helped me and took care of me, always keeping me up to date and informing me of every step. She gave me the peace I needed. I never felt alone during the first step (insert a baloon). During the whole process I also find a good care of another midwife who also helped me a lot. Unfortunately, things went bad as I needed an urgent c-section during an infection quickly picked up in the Labour ward. Again I have only good words and I am so thankful for the doctors , nurses and midwives who helped me during the operation. They act quickly and extremely kind .They made sure everything was done properly and always telling me every step. When the operation finished I was struggling with my blood pressure (it was very low), I had an amazing nurse trying everything she could to put me back on track , (she even prepared me a toast at the end) during this time the doctors were coming to check to make sure I was getting there. When I did I got the visit of all of them wishing us (my husband , my baby boy and me ) all the best. I can’t thank them enough for everything they did for us. They made sure I had a safe delivery and my baby was healthy. Back to Victoria Ward (again) after the surgery I had an amazing midwife who touched my heart . She helped me during my first day, she even gave me shower. I am so thankful for all the team I found. I really had a good experience. Thank you very much to the team, I’ll never forget you.

  3. Review titled Excellent care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mrs K Draper - Posted on 23 October 2023

We would like to say thank you for the excellent care our elderly mother received while an inpatient in Rainbow Ward for 9 weeks. The staff treated her with dignity and kindness throughout, we could not have asked for more compassion in her final days. All the staff were wonderful, they showed such understanding and gentleness towards her, they are all a credit to their profession.

  5. Review titled Shocking treatment!

Rated 1 star out of 5

My mum is in the Mulberry ware there. Went to visit and asked for an update from a doctor or nurse. Was informed twice that someone would come to see me. After two hours still waiting only to be told they’d gone home. When I pushed further seems registrar was there. On speaking with her doing her extremely unhelpful, no compassion. Uninterested and dismissive. I’d go as far to say sinister in her approach. Left me feeling very fearful for my mother. None of the nurses smile or offer any reassurance, no friendly chat to my mum. She can’t wait to be home having always previously been a supporter of the NHS. Also don’t bother phoning for an update, they simply never answer the phone. Not fit for purpose and not acceptable!!

  7. Review titled Examplary practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Martin Blain - Posted on 28 August 2023

Visited on bank holiday Monday. Expected short staff, long queues. Instead we were seen really quickly, whisked around various departments and looked after all the time. I attended with one of my children who had a fracture. Had a couple of consultations, two x-rays and a cast. A little over two hours in total which is as good as any private facility. The stuff were highly professional and so friendly, putting my child at ease. I would like to thank all of those staff who were working on the bank holiday with good cheer. Facilities clean and well maintained.

  8. Review titled A and E Nightmare!

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 17 August 2023

Arrived at A and E with my very elderly mother at 7.30pm after calling her GP and then 111. She was triaged by a lovely nurse and then we waited!!! Finally after two hours they took bloods, which we were then told would be ready in one hour. Two and a half hours later now 1am I asked what was happening with the results to be told that was confidential! When I pointed out that telling me if they were back or not had nothing to do with confidentially I was told yes they had them. I asked how long for them to share them and was advised by a nurse at least another 4 hours!! My nearly 90 year old mother was exhausted so we left having been told we could call her GP in the morning for the results. An absolute shambles. If your results are back you should expect to receive them in a realistic time scale. This would free up the waiting area. I miss the old Barnet hospital A and E where you were seen, given a cubicle, treated and sent home. This new in and out of the waiting room, (playing musical chairs), is beyond ridiculous.

Dear reviewer, we're sorry to read that your mother had a long wait in our emergency department recently. We note that there was a wait for blood tests, that results took longer to return that you were advised and that you were then advised it would be a further four hours to learn of the results, which resulted in you leaving. We would advise speaking to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) if you would like this to be looked into further (i.e. why there were delays at each stage). PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. In the meantime, we send our apologies for your poor experience and send your mother our best wishes, the patient experience team.

  9. Review titled Excellent Care at A&E

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by V Harrison - Posted on 08 August 2023

My husband had an A&E appointment after calling 111. He was given a time slot within the hour, was triaged within 15 minutes of arrival and then had tests within 30 mins. The results were available while we waited and by midday all was done and my husband was vastly reassured. Very efficient service and very kind staff - all of them. Thank you.

i stayed in victoria ward for 6 days however my bedsheets wasn't changed once. the cleaner came into the ward singing at half 11 at night as-well as talking to a peer when we was trying to sleep.. midwifes speaking their own language to each other didn't make me feel comfortable when they was on the ward next to my bed.
