  2. Review titled Utterly Speechless

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Chris - Posted on 14 February 2023

Having had a superb visit to the clinic of F floor, the two experienced nurses there were (as is usually the case) struggling to find a vein to draw blood. Rather that treat me like a pin cushion, they wrote a short explanation and sent me to Phlebotomy. As I arrived, a man appeared just ahead of me and explained to the person at reception that they had been sent by their doctor for an urgent blood test. The person in reception told him he needed an appointment. The gentleman explained that he had a racing heath and his doctor thought he was in atrial fibrillation, possibly following a heart attack. No nurse was available at the doctor's to take an ecg, so the doctor had sent him to the hospital urgently, so that blood could be taken in time for it to be tested to confirm if he had in fact had a heart attack (This guy was grey!). The person at reception repeated that he needed an appointment, or he would not be seen. The guy responded "So if I am having heart attack and I drop dead outside, that's OK is it?" The person on reception shrugged and the guy (Quite understandably) stormed off. Now, tell me I'm wrong here, but this guy should have been put in a wheelchair and wheeled round to a&e. I could not believe what I had heard and seen. My turn: I handed over my little note and explained the circumstances, and was allowed to wait for a blood test (2 minute wait - there were just two people in the waiting area and I was one of them). In to see a plebotomist I went, where the person taking my blood asked why I had been sent down to them and (petulantly tapping a vein in the back of my hand) said "Why didn't they take it from there then?" On the second time of being asked the same ill tempered question, I explained "I have no idea, I'm not a doctor". "If they dont try, they'll never learn" said the phlebotomist, who was completely ignorant that between them the two nurses who had tried to get a vein to take blood upstairs had 30+ years experience between them. The final insult being that I have a massive bruise in the area of the blood that was taken. In probably a hundred blood tests in 60 years, this has never happened before, but I was unsurprised because of the careless blaze way the sample was taken. Person at reception needs disciplinary action taken. Plebotomist needs an attitude adjustment.

  3. Review titled Lovely Eye department

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Lovely people (All) in eye department. One of many visits. But queue for Pharmacy ridiculous. Was obliged to give up (parking fee's adding up) 20 people in queue. At least 15 minutes per prescription (I timed them) I assume only one person works in there.

  4. Review titled Great staff and ward

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 09 February 2023

We had a great experience with our baby on the children’s day ward. The team were super friendly and supportive, helpful in getting diagnosed and discharged so we could care at home rather than spend the night there. The follow up Chat team are also fantastic, it’s great to feel so supported in the community.

  5. Review titled An example of how effective A&E can be run

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 February 2023

Basingstoke A&E should be shown as a test case on how this type of department can be run. The visible staff, side rooms and continual monitoring. I was astounded by the level of care and the amount of staff working tirelessly to help patients. Some if are grumpy, some really friendly. The patients in the waiting area were so much more relaxed knowing staff were there if needed. Well done for implementing this way of working.

  8. Review titled Great patient care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I had to have a small tumour removed from my bladder, this being the second time (first time was 2020 just as we went into lockdown) both times it was dealt with very quickly. Everyone was very efficient and caring. I consider myself very lucky to be under the care of Basingstoke and North Hampshire hospital and my friends agree. It would be nice if the staff were made aware of my review. I tell the discharge sister my views and she it was nice to hear as they don’t very often get feedback from patients

  9. Review titled Gave up

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 12 December 2022

After over 7 hrs of trying to speak to someone at 111, it was recommended I attend the hospital to see a consultant. I was in extreme pain and on arrival was advised it would be a further 3-4 hrs before I would see anyone. The nurses were very pleasant and gave me pain relief which was ineffective so I asked for something stronger which they did give me but it was still ineffective. After over a 4 hrs wait and a lady who arrived after me being seen before me I finally saw a doctor who sat in the room for about 30 seconds before telling me there wasn't much he could do for me and I had to wait it out. He decided to run bloods which they could have done 4 hrs ago and had ready but didn't so I had to wait a further 1.5 hrs only to be told they had my results but no doctor to deliver them as my doctor was not around and the others didn't want to pick up the case. I eventually left without the results, no help, still in pain and no idea why I just wasted an entire day sitting in a and e. I am currently in severe pain writing this review now as no further relief was offered.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of our emergency department services. I am sorry to hear of your experience, I can appreciate how frustrating the delays must have been for you and this isn’t what we would want for any patient. Our emergency departments are extremely busy at the moment and we are trying to warn patients that they may experience delays when attending our departments but I know that is no consolation when you are in pain and kept waiting for so long. I am sorry. Please do contact our customer care team so that we can follow-up with you personally. They can be contacted at customercare@hhft.nhs.uk or 01256 486766. If you are still in pain, then please do contact 111 again, or your GP. And if it is an emergency then do come back to the hospital. Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experience and I’m sorry that we didn’t get it right for you this time. Kind Regards Alex Whitfield Chief Executive

  10. Review titled Great communication

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Mrs Caroline Freeborn - Posted on 03 November 2022

I went to the plaster clinic in October to have a cast put on my arm, then back there today, to have it removed. The staff member was kind, and informative, didn't rush the appointment and gave me advice about how to deal with my arm, both while wearing the cast and today, advice about the do's and don't's in the early days after the cast is removed. Well done and thank you all (this includes the x-ray Dept and consultants) for being so helpful and professional. All in all, a great NHS experience, thank you very much.
