  1. Review titled Great Care and Staff

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Rachel Collyer - Posted on 15 December 2023

After visiting over the last few days i cannot recommend the team at Bradford Royal Infirmary enough. After a traumatic incident and a call to 111, we visited at 2am on a Wednesday morning. After a short wait in A&E, were transferred to the ward. All the staff who we dealt with were lovely, caring and professional. A follow up appointment was booked for the following day, again, couldnt fault the staff at all. Everything was handled with the upmost care, and we were made to feel comfortable, abeit recieving sad news. The care recieved is leagues above Leeds General Iinfirmary. Thank you to all the staff for helping us through such a difficult time.

  2. Review titled We are not all the same

by tjaynee - Posted on 28 November 2023

Went in recently for an x-ray which my doctor ordered. I was told to sit in a waiting room on my own without my carer. When I went in for x-ray there were two members of staff in the room and a member of staff behind the screen. One of the members of staff pushed me towards the chest x-ray machine with their hand on my back and the other pulling my arm. I had a massive panic attack because I never was told they were going to touch me and they never asked if they could. I have autism and CPTSD and I know I don't have to be touched by anyone without my permission. I told them to get off me. They then were rude to me and said they were just putting me in position for the x-ray and seemed angry at me. So I advised them to tell me how to stand and I would do it myself and I told them I have autism and don't like getting touched. They were not nice about it. And they hurt my back on my fractures - we are not all the same and I have severe osteoporosis with multiple vertebrae fractures. I also had an x-ray there and a dexa scan recently and the people who did them were lovely. I feel the three in the room this time were nasty with a bad attitude with me. After the x-ray I asked how soon will my result come and I was told 2 weeks. I asked if it took so long if there was a break? I explained I needed it back because I needed to have the proof I've broken my rib. The member of staff said it didn't matter as they don't treat broken ribs anyway but that isn't the point. I was told the same day last month when I had a fractured spine and if I had broken my rib I needed to tell my pain clinic doctor and my rheumatology doctor. I found these staff members just rude and didn't explain it nicely. The member of staff should not have touched my broken back and should have explained what they were doing, not just pushed me onto a machine. So in future maybe staff should ask and explain instead of rushing and pushing patients and maybe consider some of us have other conditions and need different treatment and reasonable adjustments. I feel that too many NHS staff get away with not following laws for disabled people and I am fed up of it.

Hi my name is Catherine and part of my role is responding to posts on Care Opinion. Apologies for the delay in responding to your post. I am very sorry to hear of your experience attending the X-Ray Department, this is not the care we aim to provide and I would like to apologise for your poor experience. Here at the Trust we aim to provide services in a kind and caring manner to all patients taking into account individual needs and conditions. All staff have very recently been required to undergo national mandatory training that includes key issues to consider for patients with autism and disabilities. This training is in progress across the Trust and should help avoid any similar experiences. The Principal Superintendent for X-Ray would like to investigate this but would need further detail, please can you contact our Patient Experience Service (PALS) on 01274 364810 or by emailing patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk It is reassuring that on previous visits to the department for an x-ray and a Dexa scan you found the staff to be lovely. Thank you again for raising your concerns. We, as a Trust, value all feedback, positive or negative, as an opportunity to drive improvements to our services. Kind regards Catherine Healy Patient Involvement & Experience Co-Ordinator Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

  3. Review titled Lack of Care

Rated 1 star out of 5

My 93 year old mother in law was admitted with a very swollen hand on advice from the Paramedic. Over 12 hours later and still waiting we have been told on numerous occasions they are waiting for Plastics to attend to the situation. It seems incredible and unprofessional to leave a vulnerable old lady in a cubicle with very little updates on when she will be seen.

Hi my name is Catherine and as part of my role I respond to patient posts on Care Opinion. Apologies for the delay in response. Thank you taking the the time to post your feedback about your elderly mother in law's experience whilst attending Accident & Emergency. I am very sorry to hear that your mother in law had a long wait for the Plastics Team to deal with her issue. This is not the care we would like to be providing to any of our patients. Winter pressures, including increased attendances and admissions, are affecting many acute hospitals across the country. This, along with staffing pressures in a number of specialties, has had a negative effect on the service we are able to provide. I do hope your mother in law received appropriate treatment and if you would like us to look into this in more detail please contact our Patient Experience Service here at the Trust so that we can investigate. You can email patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk or telephone Patient Experience Service (PALS) on 01274 364810. We were in Ward 32 on and off for 3 days, the staff there are incredible! Our son was made to feel incredibly calm and safe (and they were very reassuring and gave lots of information to us). A hospital is not a place you want to be with your child, but the team that work here really make a difference! Superstars xx

  7. Review titled Heroic, staff working in unacceptable conditions

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 04 September 2023

Attended A&E for an ongoing health problem which had suddenly flared up. Arrived around 6pm, and a 12h wait to be seen by a doctor. Medical staff, nurses, doctors, health care assistants, catering staff, cleaners and others were without exception, patient, kind, caring, compassionate and thoughtful, though working in the most unacceptable conditions due to extreme understaffing. For many hours during the night, there was only one doctor available to see 120 patients, as the others were occupied in resus, resulting in average waits of 10h for patients, including elderly and frail patients who were waiting in wheelchairs for all of this time. 3 nursing staff were run ragged for the whole of their 12h shift. Heroic staff showed especial kindness to those with learning and mental health difficulties who attended the Dept. These (Dickensian) working conditions are completely unacceptable for staff, and the Health and Safety Executive should take a look at the institutional risk assessments for stress, to see if they are credible. I would be interested to hear from the Chief Executive, how the current workforce plan is addressing these issues. Quite frankly, I am surprised that staff are turning up at all to face these daily pressures, and wholly sympathise with them for striking. Severe understaffing needs urgent action, right now. If I were the Chief Executive, I would be hanging my head in shame at presiding over these appalling working conditions. Obviously all of these issues have severe knock-on effects for patient care.

  8. Review titled Lack of communication

I have an appointment with Ophthalmology in three days time. Unfortunately I am unable to keep that appointment so I have been trying change it. For some reason it is not listed on my ‘Upcoming Appointments’ so I cannot change it online. I have rung up five times, waited patiently for my turn in the queue. It has either cut me off before my turn became available or I have supposedly been transferred to the relevant department where the phone isn’t answered and again, cuts off. I am not surprised there are so many missed appointments when it is impossible to advise the relevant people that one cannot attend.

  9. Review titled Horrific setting for health care

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 08 December 2023

Visited to access an ear nose and throat specialist from my GP. No organisation/clear process in the A and E reception area added to unnecessary delays in getting people the care they need. The journey through and an and e to get the my obs sorted and signposted to ambulatory care was quick. On entering the waiting area, it was overcrowded, unhygienic and grim. People laying on the floor waiting to receive care, and liquids and soiled hospital garments laying in around them. The environment was pretty disgusting, the processes disorganised and the staff appeared demoralised. Basic things can be done to improve patient and staff experiences (clear instructions on entry to A and E, clear name calling so people know staff are seeking them, and cleaning up). It simply doesn’t need to be this way and unless people speak up it won’t change. It is a complete joke that taxpayers money is squandered providing this dissatisfactory level of healthcare. Admittedly, many people are abusing the system, but unless that is called out and attentive referral pathways are developed this won’t get better. People should not be left wondering what is happening in overcrowded unhygienic waiting areas whilst people cough and slugger over them. When are you going to start doing the basics well? What plans are in place to alleviate unnecessary demand on the trust?

I’m still sat in a cubicle after 6 hours after being told to get to a&e asap in case of heart trouble but still sat here, toilets are filthy people vaping in waiting room and saw 2 cigarette end in disable toilet, have asked how long, doctors are busy and close curtains so you are forgotten, nobody seems to strive to do better, every visit gets worse, no pride, and homeless people sleeping in the hospital waiting rooms absolutely stinks of stale cigarette smoke, bri is such a let down
