Review titled Amazing team
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Laura Addison - Posted on 24 April 2024
I was booked into Lexden Ward for an induction on 27/03. My care from the start was excellent and once our baby was born we couldn’t have asked for a more caring team. All of the staff from reception, to midwives, cleaning and food teams were extremely friendly and helpful. Well done to all of the student midwives who were just as good and to the midwives mentoring them. The delivery suite team supported me through birth and helped the experience be the best it could possibly be. It is by far the hardest thing a woman will go through physically and to have such a supportive team around makes a huge difference. I had to return to the ward a week after birth due to a complication when home, however upon visiting the maternity triage at midnight the team there were caring, reassuring and professional which helped to make a quite scary experience much less worrying. We were readmitted for 2 nights following this and my care was once again second to none. As we had a cluster feeding week old we were fortunately able to have a side room which we were extremely grateful for as it allowed my partner to stay and support me more and alleviated the worry of us keeping the rest of the ward awake when our baby cried in the night. There was a particularly lovely lady working with the food team on this occasion, apologies we did not catch your name but this was a blonde lady who worked the full shift from breakfast until evening. She really looked after us and took time to chat. During this admission our baby had his 5 day check and at this it was noted that he had a tongue tie, the follow up at the tongue tie clinic was just as good and the team there helpful and supportive. Again just this week when we were referred from the UTC to the children’s ward(separate from maternity services) for our babies distress with gas and reflux the nurse and doctors on shift were excellent and looked after us during the process of examination, diagnosis and prescribing some medication to help. Our son is 4 weeks old tomorrow. All in all the last month has been the hardest of our lives but we couldn’t have asked for better care than we have received at Colchester Hospital. Thank you to every one who looked after us throughout the whole process. We’re forever grateful. ☺️

This concerned BCC surgery for my husband. The whole team from reception to consultant have been amazing, They made themselves available, went out of their way to help us get the care we needed and were there when the dressings became a bit worrying. We even phoned them for advice when on holiday. They never shirked from their support. A truly caring section of the hospital. Thank you to the whole team.

Review titled Terrible experience
by Anonymous - Posted on 31 March 2024
I had the misfortune of being admitted to Brightlingsea ward this year after a day on the Surgical assessment unit. To start with I was not listened to and ignored when I said that I could not sit up or stand and this resulted in collapsing on the unit when I was finally listened to. After seeing a Doctor on the unit that showed less no compassion and could hardly make the effort to speak with me! I was later moved to brightlingsea ward where it has to be said that the nurses were amazing and very kind and could not do enough for patients despite being run off their feet. The next day I was reviewed by the same Dr as the previous day and was not treated any better and was spoken too like I was a five year old. If it was not for the nursing staff on Brightlingsea ward the stay would have been terrible as the doctor had a negative attitude and no empathy for his patients. I was in tears during the consultation with him and was offered no support at all. All in all disappointed with the medical team on the ward!

Review titled Great care
Rated 4 stars out of 5

I attended A&E today for my baby girl after being advised to do so by 111, on arrival A&E was rammed and on the door advertising a wait of 5 hours. My little lady was so well cared for. Even though it was clear everyone was incredibly busy, each member of staff we spoke to took time to check thoroughly and to make sure all bases had been covered. I had to ask for assistance before our name was called as I needed medication for my daughter and the nurse I stopped (even though she clearly was rushed off her feet) came straight away, helped me and was so cheerful about it. We were called in after 3 hours (less than we had originally been expecting) and were treated brilliantly, I left with all the medication I needed for my daughter and am incredibly grateful for the service and help we received.

Review titled Amazing midwife’s
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Grace bannister - Posted on 07 June 2024
Starting from the start of my pregnancy journey I could not fault the maternity services at all. I was cared for with respect and compassion as I started my labour in the morning. I was given open choices about my birth and was given respect with these desicions. I can honestly say if it weren’t for the midwife’s I don’t know how I would’ve done it. I also had a student midwife deliver my child and she was absolutely amazing. I was coached all the way through and had someone with me constantly through the whole process. I will never forget them x

Review titled Kept in a narrow corridor
Rated 1 star out of 5

I was admitted for diabetes, and the staff were wonderful, but I’m very concerned that I was placed in the main corridor of Nayland ward. I am on the autism spectrum and felt exposed as everyone and everything came past . I was offered food but had to refuse it as there was no table to put it on . Have eating issues and I can’t eat infront of everyone, I did ask for fortisip as it’s on my prescription but I was never given any. It’s so important to eat when you’re having insulin injections. It was like something out of a comedy, I was upset as they had someone who Swas infectious brought up and the side room wasn’t ready so the bed was right in front of me for 10 minutes so I was worried as in extremely clinically vulnerable. Someone had died so they put me somewhere in the dark infront of the male bay while they moved the body. I was taken up from an and e and left in a wheelchair for 2 hours which left me in agony as I have arthritis in my knee and back. I felt so exposed with no privacy. The staff were kind and tried to make the best of it . It’s ridiculous how can you eat when you have nowhere to put your food? I’m diabetic

Review titled Long hours wait, not enough staff.
Rated 1 star out of 5

Attended maternity triage twice with my 39 + weeks partner. We have reached the department before 3pm and got to see a doctor at 21.30, and the second time we attended was we reached at 3pm, was put on monitoring at 6pm and waited until 23:00 for a doctor review but we could wait any longer as we were told there's only one doctor on duty and currently attending a ceasarean operation. My partner was attending triage due to bleeding( when woken up in the morning however stopped bleeding after that) she was there to make sure that everything is ok. She was put on monitor 3 hours but waited 5 hours and there was still no doctors to review.(though my partner was asked to remove my pants ready to be seen) Maternity triage in Colchester is not very comfortable to sit around especially long long long hours . Not enough space . Under staff . Staffs were lovely but there wasn't enough staff at all . Felt sorry for all mothers who suffers instead of having a great journey delivery.

Review titled Unable to get support
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 09 February 2024
I have an autistic spectrum diagnosis and i feel this leads me to recive a poor service. I would hope to access the hospital learning disabilities and asd nurse, but the lady is always too busy to offer any support in dealing with the different departments ( I have multiple disabilities).she is unfortunately often too busy to return calls and I have been left feeling vulnerable as I have no family to support me. I dread comming to hospital, I find things that others find easy impossible due to my communication problems and feel let down by the one person who is employed to help.
