  1. Review titled First Class Care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I cannot praise the team in the Stroke section of A@E highly enough. Every member of each team that attended to me from Triage to Physio were diligent in explaining their role carefully and fully, how I would be affected and how best to cope with the effects of the stroke and how best to avoid further episodes. They were all good humoured throughout despite a very busy day, and left me with the feeling that they really cared. Thank you so much to everyone who attended to me.

  2. Review titled Like the Curates Egg, good in parts.

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by David - Posted on 25 December 2022

I am 81yrs of age, & recently celebrated my last birthday in Derriford Hospital. I was there briefly for a partial hip replacement due to a fall onto icy concrete. As there were no ambulances available to take me in that day & there was too much ice to get out from our house, a neighbour with a 4 wheel drive took me in. I was placed on a gurney and taken into A&E 1 hour post trauma. I remained on the gurney in the A&E for what seemed seemed like an an eternity. Eventually after a failed theatre slot, I was on the table on my 81st birthday 2 days post trauma. I remained nil by mouth for 2 and a half days. The food once one could get slotted into the system was delicious,& I am a very discerning eater, the staff were on the whole charming with one or two notably unpleasant exceptions. I was in and out in record time, 5 nights only. I’m by nature politely assertive, and have the advantage of being particularly medically savvy. I have also been a lifelong devotee of regular & strenuous exercise. I observed that many of my fellow inmates were not, & almost regardless of chronology did well or poorly depending upon their motivation & insight. During my stay there were strikes which did not help, the staff are there, as is the expertise, it just has to be adhered into a more efficient system. All in all I’m happy with my outcome, but I had to contribute far too much to make it so. There scheduled visits are a different story and are of the highest quality and standard, the elements are there, overall efficiency still needs work.

  3. Review titled Wonderful staff

by Lodwick - Posted on 20 December 2022

Just a few words to share my immense appreciation of the staff in the Lyd unit of Derriford hospital. My sister has been transferred there following a nasty fall at home which has resulted in health issues that will require surgical intervention. The staff in the Lyd unit are doing a wonderful job caring for her, not only in giving the prescribed treatment but also in making her feel cared for - so important for her at this time. Thank you so much for her and from all our family. Btw, my sister also mentioned that the meals she is served are just great. Thank you again.

The doctor who I saw in A&E was so thorough and explained everything and made me feel at ease, they were quite busy but nothing was too much trouble

  5. Review titled Bad treatment

Rated 4 stars out of 5

I was at the Surgical Assessment Unit this week and another patient was in pain and being sick in another cubicle, she was on all fours on the bed, no one had bothered to give her any privacy, I appreciate they're busy but a few nurses came in and out and a nurse was sat at the station, it was only when a doctor came in and he pulled the curtain across, I felt for the lady

  6. Review titled sympathetic nursing

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Henry Hayward - Posted on 19 December 2022

My stay in Derriford exemplified everything that is good about care in this country. The only point that I would take issue with is the constant rotation of nurses. It would be reassuring if familiar faces returned on each shift rather than new ones. That having been said there was a constant high standard and I do not feel that qualty was compromised. Thank you for the care and thoroughness with which I was treated.

  7. Review titled Poor message

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 11 November 2022

I have received a text message asking if I want to remain on the waiting list for a knee operation (waiting 2 years). The message was cut in half and doesn't contain the important information - who to contact - tel number - email address? I have searched the web site but no contact details for the department on there. I called the main hospital number at 16.45 and no one answered. How are you supposed to deal with this? And I do need the operation rather more urgently than I did when I first went to my GP 3 years ago!!

  8. Review titled The communication was awful

    by encryptionts96 - Posted on 01 December 2022

My husband had a planned operation for a brain tumour on a Friday morning. All went to plan, the doctor phoned to tell me, which was good. That's when it started to go downhill. No one ever phoned to keep me informed, so unless I rang I was not told anything on his progress, and you don't like to keep ringing staff as they are really busy, but you do need to be informed about a loved one. My husband phoned on a Tuesday morning to say he had a scan, all was good, and he was being discharged. No one phoned all day to actually tell me this, and as my husband was a bit confused, I didn't know what to believe - we live 150 miles from the hospital, so you cannot just up and go. I had to ring the hospital to find out he was being discharged that evening at 5 p.m. on a dark, cold night. They sent him home via hospital transport. The communication was awful. We are under an immense amount of stress as it is without this. Very annoyed

  9. Review titled No communication between nurses and relatives

by Fussell - Posted on 09 November 2022

I am experiencing no communication between nurses and relatives, even had the phone put down on me. I feel this has been an abysmal service and not through lack of staff. Many running around but ask them any questions about my husband they dont appear to me to have a clue what is going on. I even had one nurse who was looking after my husband ask what was wrong with him. I feel the staff should know who and what they are dealing with without having to ask.

  10. Review titled Superb experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Steve Burge - Posted on 09 November 2022

I can’t thank the rei team enough. Calm, totally professional and simply superb. I owe you my eyesight. From first experiencing issues on Friday evening, to calling rei on Saturday morning, to being seen Sunday morning and treated immediately for a retinal tear, through to follow up on Wednesday afternoon, everything was brilliant. The rei was reassuringly calm, putting me at ease at a worrying time. Everything was done quietly and efficiently. I never had to wait anywhere for more than 5 minutes. I’ve never experienced care or service anything like it. Huge respect to you all and my heartfelt thanks.
