Review titled So reassuring to get top quality care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Stan Calderwood - Posted on 27 November 2023
I had an appointment today at Dorchester. On arrival at the department, I was met by an HCA who was intelligent, thoughtful, informative, polite and helpful – helpful in a number of ways too. On meeting the consultant was delighted at the care and attention I received. He had clearly read my notes carefully, asked very sensible questions, explained my situation extremely well, gave me a proper physical examination and asked for me to do related physical tests. Once completed he gave me excellent advice and reassurance. A top quality physician, and great to experience. Well done all!!

Review titled Treated very efficiently and with great kindness
by Dylan JD - Posted on 12 September 2023
We, and our extended family, have had wonderful experiences of care from Dorchester Hospital over the years. In the last couple of days we have had to visit A&E, as my husband suffered a TIA on. We actually spent the whole night in the emergency department one night, and then had to return two days later. On both occasions we were treated very efficiently and with great kindness and care. From the reception staff to the nurses and doctors, everyone was lovely. Even a cleaner went about her work with a smile and was friendly. Overall, we were both treated brilliantly - patient and wife! We now await an appointment for follow up care. We are confident that that will be just as good.

Review titled Very Efficient

Telephoned from Wareham at 07:10 with blocked oesophagus, reception suggested I come in. Went through reception, triage, a&e, two separate X-rays, had a Gastroscopy? debriefed and home drinking tea and biscuits by 14:10. !! All departments from the receptionist to the consultant were pleasant, friendly and kept me informed of everything that was to happen. My welfare appeared to be their priority.

Review titled Friendly and efficient service
Rated 5 stars out of 5

I was told to attend the ED today by 111 because of an eye injury I experienced earlier. I was very impressed that I was triaged within 10 minutes of arriving and given a clear plan of next steps shortly after. A few tests later and I was reassured that no lasting damage had been done and I was booked in for an appointment the next morning (just 10 hours after my initial ED attendance) just to make sure that the injury was improving. I was able to go home within an hour of my attendance reassured I wasn't going to have long term damage to my vision, what else can you ask for? Everyone was really friendly from the receptionist to the triage nurse and healthcare assistants. I have thankfully only had a handful of dealings with DCH A&E, but this experience is typical of this great department and hospital. Thank you.

Review titled Efficient process & friendly service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Rob - Posted on 12 July 2023
In for a prostrate biopsy on Monday 10th in the Day Surgery unit. I found the experience very reassuring on 2 counts. The process from reception at 8am to discharge at 4pm was very efficient and well run and the service of the nurses was supporting, listening and friendly. So thanks to my 2 nurses who were my chaperones for the day & the extensive surgery team. Very impressed.

Review titled Many things were poor and need to be improved.
by Patient 5 - Posted on 13 July 2023
I was admitted on Saturday for a hysterectomy in Dorset County Hospital. While all the staff I met were helpful and friendly, there were many things that were very poor and need to be improved. I was admitted at 07:30, and waited over 6 hours to go into surgery, I had the pre-op meds at about 09:00, but didn't go down to surgery until after 1:00 pm. Once admitted to the ward, I was not offered anything to eat or drink, or told how the surgery went, I was in a great deal of pain, yet wasn't checked on by any nurses, my sister arrived and asked for some pain meds for me, and I had to wait over an hour for someone to come and help. I was in hospital for 3 days, and on several occasions had to wait hours for pain meds, as the nurses were very sparse or I had asked and it took a long time for somebody to come. The morning after my surgery I was in a lot of pain, and really needed a wee. I thought this was strange as I had a catheter in. I finally called a nurse, nobody had checked on my catheter bag since my surgery the day before, and it was full to the brim which explained my pain and needing to go for a wee. This can't be good for you? The food was very poor when I was finally offered some. One meal was a jacket and cauliflower; it was very random and I could not eat it. On the second night I went to the toilet about 21:20 as I was going to go to bed. When I got back to my bed a nurse was standing there and told me I was being moved as they needed the bed so had to pack my things up. Three of us had to move very late at night down to the day surgery unit in make-shift beds, the last woman didn't arrive until midnight. The staff were very nice there but it was very cold, and all seemed a bit disjointed to move people so late at night. And the next morning all the staff and patients arrived for the day surgeries yet having 4 patients from wards there really messed things up. I appreciate the NHS in very stretched, and the doctors and nurses do their best, but I left the hospital very disappointed in my treatment, I shouldn't have to pay to go private in the event of needing medical help and getting the care you hope for. I really hope things can improve for the next patient who has to go into hospital, it is a stressful time anyway and not a place anybody wants to go, especially when my experience in there was so poor.
