Review titled Overcoming the fear of colonoscopy
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mr Trace Barnes - Posted on 17 September 2024
I have been extremely happy with the complete service provided by the Eastbourne Hospital"s Endoscopy Dept. My case was given an 'urgent status', but knowing the present reputation of the Nhs, I had no misunderstandings that delays could occur. I was offered 2 cancellation appointments within one two weeks; one I could not take, and the other was withdrawn through staff illness. Thinking I would be on the end if the waiting list, i was amazed to be offered another appointment for today. An overall wait of less than 30 days. I found all the staff personable, knowledgeable, sympathic and efficient in their work. My fears regarding the experience of this type of procedure was completely allayed from start to fjnish, and i left wondering whati was woorying about. I now await the results of the Patholigy Department with some trepidation, but no matter the outcome I know that I have been given first class care thus far.

Dear Trace, Thank you for taking the time to leave us such kind feedback following your recent appointment in the Endoscopy Department at Eastbourne DGH; it is very much appreciated. It is completely understandable that such an intimate procedure, and the urgency surrounding its booking, would have been a source of worry and upset for you, and compounded by the press coverage of lengthy waiting times in the NHS. We are therefore delighted to read you were offered a number of cancellation appointments to help speed up the booking of your procedure, and were eventually seen much sooner than anticipated. The Trust is committed to providing all patients with high standard of care, and so it is reassuring for us to read that on the day of your procedure you found staff to be kind, compassionate and efficient. We very much hope the next stage of your care pathway will not be delayed and that whatever the outcome, we may be able to help. We will share your lovely comments with staff Trace, but please also know we are thinking of you and send you our best wishes. Keep safe and well.

Review titled Bad experience
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Emily - Posted on 26 August 2024
I was visiting the area camping and had a bleed during early pregnancy. I have had 2.5 years of IVF and had a previous ectopic pregnancy. Despite this and despite my extreme anxiety and belief I had lost the baby, they kept me waiting for 4.5 hours before telling me no one could scan me until the Tuesday (it was Saturday evening) because of the bank holiday. Asked me several questions first though so I was left not believing that they would have been willing to scan someone in more physical pain. I now have to wait to find out if I’ve miscarried my baby. And they never let me know the results of my bloods and urine sample, which they refuse to give me over the phone. Even the receptionist said “I don’t know why they won’t give them over the phone”. I’ve had many, many hospital appointments and had private conversations over the phone so to say results aren’t possible over the phone is definitely not linked to GDPR. A waste of time with no care or answers.

Review titled Exceptional care from all the staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Marc knight - Posted on 05 August 2024
I Have just been discharged after a 5 day stay. The staff and the care I received during my visit was nothing but exceptional. All the staff treated me with kindness and care throughout my stay. From a past experience I have a fear of hospitals from a different hospital, the staff at the DGH has made me rethink my fear and have given me my faith back in hospitals. I will never forget all the staff that looked after me and will be forever grateful to all that did. From the bottom of my heart I thank you all for your hard work and Compassion!

My 90 year old husband was taken by ambulance from home to Eastbourne hospital, he was bleeding from somewhere he shouldn’t have been. So much that he was becoming light headed and very worried. We were shown to a bay in A&E and from the moment he arrived was looked after with great care and discretion. Bloods were taken almost as soon as he was settled, and put on monitored heart rate and blood pressure. Even though we were there for a few hours waiting for his blood results, there were nurses available to help him use the bathroom and monitor his blood loss. He was treated with dignity at all times, even though the staff were obviously under pressure from being very busy, and also some not cooperating patients, making it difficult for them. My husband was then seen by a junior doctor, who went through his medical history (very long) , he decided to talk to a more senior colleague. He was then seen by a surgical dr. , who once again was very kind and reassuring. By now the blood loss was slower and he was given a cup of tea, a sandwich and biscuits, by yet another lovely nurse. After a very long day we were able to go home feeling well taken care of, and told if things took a turn for the worse to go straight back. Thank you to all who looked after my 90 year old husband so well.

Review titled Not Good
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 25 July 2024
Turned out I was not given all the required information at the Pre Op. As a result I was completely unprepared for the effects of the procedure and was quite frightened and given no reassurance at all. The anaesthetist who saw me before the procedure didn't know my name or what procedure I was having and was not the same person as I met in the operating theatre. The consultant came to give me information after the procedure which would have been pointless if I hadn't recorded what he said because I was still seriously under the influence of the anaesthetic and can't remember what he said. They kept trying to feed me a sandwich which I told them I couldn't eat because I am coeliac. Probably asked me about 4 or 5 times! When I left, they didn't give me any guidance about keeping the wounds dry except a nurse said not to wash for a couple of days. I have had to find all the information I need on the internet and from family and friends. This wasn't a good experience. I observed the treatment of other patients who were in pain and could not understand why they were being ignored. Having recently had an operation in the QVH in East Grinstead which I would rate as 10/10, the experience I just had in Eastbourne would be a 3/10. But only because I am alive and currently don't have sepsis!

We recognise how worrying it is to undergo any medical procedure and aim to provide a high standard of care to all our patients and wish to offer to our sincere apologies for your poor experience. It was also disappointing to learn that you were not given all the information pre-operatively, which left you unprepared on the day and frightened, as this is not how we would wish any patient to feel. Should you wish to discuss your experience further, please contact a member of the Patient Experience Team on 0300 131 4784 or via email on esh-tr.PatientExperience@nhs.net so that they can follow this matter up on your behalf.

I have recently transferred my care to Eastbourne hospital, and was apprehensive about this, I have cardiac Amyloidosis and heart failure. I attended my first appointment on polling day! From arriving and having my all my checks done I was treated with kindness and respect. The Dr I saw was very aware of my condition and talked to me in a way a 90 year old man could easily understand. Wonderful. I certainly won’t be anxious when it’s time for my next review Thank you Eastbourne hospital
