  1. Review titled Would have expected a little more respect

    by Tee123 - Posted on 27 February 2023

I had an appointment at the Edgware Breast screening unit for a routine mammogram. The radiographer was very businesslike and just uncaring. Asked me why I was crying - firstly I had facial cancer surgery over three months, and found the experience very emotional. I suffer from scoliosis and the radiographer pushed and prodded me into the most uncomfortable positions and made the machine so high I needed to stand on my toes. I came out of this unpleasant screening with backache that is totally unbearable and am now still on anti inflammatory drugs. I also will mention that I am 70 years old and would have expected a little more respect.

  2. Review titled Given time and support

    by hydraqb44 - Posted on 26 January 2023

I had a stroke 3 and a half months ago. I have been in rehab for 1 month. This is the first time I had a chance to sleep in 2 months. The unit allowed me to move at my own pace. There was no need to speed my development. I am now slower than I once was. I felt a feeling of family within the unit, everybody had time for me and the service and support was really good.

  4. Review titled Helped to walk again

    by lionkn58 - Posted on 12 April 2023

I came in to the NRC because I had b12 deficiency and spinal nerve damage. When I arrived I was in a wheelchair and could not walk. I was in a lot of pain all the time. Day by day I pushed my self to do the physio and the physio team also encouraged me to keep trying even though the pain was unbearable when trying to stand up and walk. Slowly I improved with the encouragement and help from the physio team and I was able to get out of wheel chair and use the zimmer frame. After a short while I then became able to walk slowly with a stick and I am improving still with my balance. Coming here has made me able to walk again. Thanks to all the staff that helped me through this journey.

I am pleased to read that with physiotherapy, encouragement and your hard work, you made a good recovery and were able to walk. I hope that you are continuing with this recovery at home. 5. Review titled Uncaring Blood Test Desk Staff

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 20 December 2022

My wife had an appointment for a blood test on Monday 19th December 2022. The woman at the blood test desk sent my wife away. I phoned Royal Free blood test appointment line who were very helpful and confirmed my wife's appointment, transferred the call to Edgware. We were asked to come back to Edgware and the woman who had told my wife to go away stated that it was not her job to look at forms ! This is a shocking statement shows that she is in an unsuitable role and lacks training in how to deal with people and the procedures when a patient arrives. Before we left another patient said to my wife she is not a nice person. Why is she in an unsuitable role without training ? If Royal Free can look up the appointment system why can she not be bothered to do the same ?

  6. Review titled The road to recovery after my stroke

    by Janexc67 - Posted on 20 March 2023

I arrived at the rehab hospital unable to stand after a stroke and I'm now climbing stairs! I thought I would never walk again but the whole team have been amazing. They have encouraged me so much since my arrival and going to the gym and all the extra activities such as cookery and singing have been fun and helped me to cope with the effects of having a stroke. I also feel a lot stronger physically and mentally and I am gradually getting my independence back. A very big thank you to all the physios, psychologists and occupational therapists doctors nurses and healthcare assistants.

  7. Review titled I had a stroke

by Ocheze - Posted on 08 December 2022

It all happened in Nigeria in November. I was on a visit. My wife and children were here in the UK. I felt unwell suddenly and was taken to a nearby local hospital by my brothers. My blood pressure was checked and found to be high. I was given anti hypertensive medication. According to my brothers, my right hand and my left leg became weak and my speech started disappearing gradually. My wife was not aware of my illness until a few days later. She instructed my brothers to take me to a well established hospital for further investigations and treatment. I was admitted at this hospital and had some blood tests and CT Scans done. They showed some infarction on the left side of my brain and that was the cause of the stroke. Treatment was commenced swiftly. My wife and my daughter arrived Nigeria soon afterwards and came to the hospital. My wife had a meeting with the consultant and enquired if I was medically fit to travel. The consultant prepared a medical report and a confirmation letter to the airline. We left Nigeria soon afterwards and I was taken straight to accident and emergency at Barnet Hospital. I was seen immediately on arrival my blood pressure was very high and I was weak and very tired. I had CT Scan done twice in A&E. The CT scan results and all the medication including the report was handed to the doctors in A&E. The commented on the late presentation. I was later admitted at Spruce ward for three weeks and subsequently transferred to the NRC at the start of December My wife wrote this story on my behalf as I currently suffer from global aphasia. .

  8. Review titled Inpatient stay

    by woodpeckerje83 - Posted on 11 November 2022

My stay here has been good, the staff here help you if you need help, but equally they leave you to do things for yourself if you feel confident and independent. Making an effort to do things for yourself here really helps your recovery and builds your confidence to prepare you for when you're going home. One thing I think is important for preparing to go home is thinking about tasks that are important and relevant for when you eventually get there. For example, I have found tasks such as practicing the stairs useful, but other things available such as the exercise bike not so useful as I won't have this bike at home. I think it's important not to be over confident as well and listen to the therapists if they advise you to get help with certain tasks to work towards being independent otherwise you can cause injury to yourself. I have to say that all staff here are very aware of what you're capable of and only challenge you if they think you can do that thing. Always manage your expectations and don't compare yourself to others, as everyone is here for different reasons. It can get in your head by comparing yourself to people who are perhaps progressing quicker, but as long as you're giving everything your best efforts, that'll give you the best chance of recovery and independence.

  9. Review titled Suffering muscle wasting after being in intensive care

    by aurigayr56 - Posted on 02 February 2023

I was suddenly taken ill with pneumonia then sepsis and spent 8 weeks in Intensive Care. I remember waking up unable to move or speak and with lots of tubes attached, including a tracheostomy. It was frightening, the staff in Intensive Care had saved my life and looked after me with kindness and skill. After a while I transferred to a medical ward and then to Neurological Rehab Unit. Although I’d had physiotherapy in hospital, the rehab unit had the facilities to provide much more intensive support and I was quickly able to stand, then walk. It’s an excellent facility, with caring staff. There’s a real sense of community and the patients thrive in this atmosphere and support each other in their recovery.

  10. Review titled Needs an update

    by septemberpg96 - Posted on 16 September 2022

I am a wheelchair user, unable to walk and staying at the center. When i mentioned the issues around accessibility I was asked to call and told that I could give feedback through Care Opinion. So, the majority of the equipment is old and not suitable: Mirrors - positioned too high cannot see through them. Sinks - again positioned in a way that makes them very very difficult to use, sort of have to use them at a slant. Soap dispensers - too high, difficult to use. Paper towels - again too high, cannot reach them Grab rails - wrong position to grab, cannot hold them to adjust shower head height, cannot adjust temperature. Water - either too hot or too cold Lights - cannot access the light switch to turn on/off lights Doors - too heavy to open/close Garden - again door too heavy to use - need to ask staff or family to help I feel that the whole center needs an upgrade, modernisation and a rethink about accessibility. The care is all fine and the staff are all nice. We have a weekly meeting and these will be discussed but I've been told that the more feedback we give the more chance there is of change, so I am giving my feedback.

Dear patient I am sorry for the delay in responding to your feedback. Thank you for taking the time to give important feedback on the physical environment at the NRC that you feel needs updating. I will give this feedback to the estates and facilities team who we work with at Edgware Hospital and will look at all the suggestions you have made to see what can be changed. Unfortunately some things such as the doors cannot be changed as they are needed as part of fire safety regulations but there may be some things that we can change or improve over time. I have discussed the doors to the garden and will follow this up again as the estates team were going to look at this. I was pleased to read that the care provided has been good and the staff have been nice to you
