Review titled Passionate nurses
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sharon Ayling - Posted on 09 November 2023
I had an appointment this morning at the cardiology department. I was seen by two nurses who both treated me so well. I was asked lots of questions about my health and every answer I gave I was also given an explanation of why I was feeling pain. The senior nurse looked back as far as 2009 and explained so much in a way that I could understand. Every detail was explained of what will happen next and when I should contact my GP for medication and follow up reviews. I understand the pressure put upon medical staff within the NHS but I also feel that if all staff were as wonderful as these two ladies, then so many more patients would feel reassured. It would be lovely if the two nurses that took care of me could also know how wonderful they are, professional, sharing their knowledge was so helpful and also has made me feel confident that my health will improve from their advice.

After sitting in a dirty uncomfortable waiting area for over an hour I was shown into a room by a very pleasant health care worker, to be greeted by a middle aged woman sat behind a desk asking why was I there ? She made me feel like I was in the head mistresses office told me I was in the wrong place and there was nothing with , how wrong could she be I actually have cancer , treated amazingly at York Hospital no thanks what so ever to the uncaring nurse in Northallerton

Review titled Really Hurtful and Upsetting
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Rebecca C - Posted on 05 October 2023
I attended because I had harmed myself. I want to preface this by saying that the nurse practitioner and support staff that helped me were absolutely lovely. They couldn’t have been kinder. The nurse practitioner felt that the wounds were serious enough that they needed stitching and sought advice from a doctor. The doctor also agreed that this was the case. But then in a discussion outside the door of the room I was in the nurse practitioner was told that they couldn’t be stitched because ‘people like me’ rip them out and make the wounds worse. This is an horrific generalisation. I was completely transparent with them as a staff as to the reasons I’d done what I’d done and that nothing like this has happened for almost two years. Had I known that I would be treated like ‘one of those people’ I would never have shared what I did. I made myself vulnerable by being completely honest and felt completely insulted by the decision made by the doctor. If this is in fact policy then I suggest it gets reviewed. In the past when this was a regular problem for me my wounds were always stitched without incident, this is the first hospital to ever say this to me. To be responded to like this was completely insulting and made an already distressing situation so much worse. I will now be left with increased scarring and where steri strips have been used to pull the wounds closed they have already begun to blister my skin because they are too tight.

Review titled Phlebotomy Flawed Ticket System
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Duane Allmark - Posted on 26 May 2023
My wife was told to by her specialist to get some bloods taken for her thyroid at the walk in phlebotomy before a certain date. Upon arrival at the Friarage there was no indication from signage as to where we should go, the paperwork indicated the diabetic clinic but no signs for that either. No reception staff but we spoke to someone who told us there are 3 areas you can get bloods taken and recommended the outpatients as it's closer, it was a good guess as when we asked we were shown through to outpatients waiting area 2 and given a yellow ticket number and invited to sit until our number was called. The system they have in place is that yellow tickets are walk-ins and green tickets are clinic and have priority over yellow, we were sat in an area with about 3 people waiting one of whom had a green ticket and was called first, but then another person came in and was given a green ticket and gets called in next... And so it continued for over an hour. We were always the next in line for yellow but other people would come and get called in before us because they were given a green ticket. My wife spoke to someone about it and asked if we could book ahead next time but she was told no. They know it's a flawed system and realise, like us, people could be there a long time getting frustrated, anxious and angry at the wait time getting longer and longer. Not so good if you have to be back for the school run etc, and each person that's walks in heightens your anxiety levels. Thankfully the staff prioritised my wife for the next slot because we'd waited so long but they could have made us wait because of the flawed rules put in place. This system needs to change ASAP!

Review titled Excellent patient care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Sandra Chappell - Posted on 06 April 2023
Took my 96 year old mum to urgent care on 05/04/2023 with a broken ankle. Although staff shortages meant a long wait of 6 hours in total, every single member of staff treated my mum with care & compassion, kept her informed & maintained her dignity throughout. We were even treated to a welcome cup of tea, despite the department being extremely busy, and staff working long beyond the end of their shift. Thank you.
