Review titled Poor care
Rated 2 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 05 July 2024
I visited the urgent treatment centre one evening as I had an infected abscess that I had started antibiotics for, however my GP told me to seek urgent care rather than wait for a GP appointment if I felt it got any worse, especially with me having a condition like diabetes. The swelling and pain had gotten worse that evening, my leg was swollen right down to my ankle. This was very concerning for me, as I have been hospitalised with an infected abscess before. I didn’t want to risk leaving it overnight due to how much it had changed within a matter of hours. I waited 3 and a half hours (which I had no problem with as I know it is incredibly busy and there’s lots of patients to see). After the 3 and a half hours I got called in, the clinician who I saw had a “can’t be bothered” attitude from the first meeting of her, I explained what was wrong, she never asked to see it, she never examined my leg, didn’t take any temperatures nothing like that. I was just advised if I have concerns to go back to my GP and carry on taking the antibiotics. I understand the antibiotics need time to start to work, however this had progressed quite a lot in just a few hours, I feel like I should have at least been examined, I was in the room for all of 20 seconds. I left the hospital really upset and anxious over this.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your recent experience. I am really sorry to read of the events you have described and appreciate what a worrying time this must have been for you. I am saddened that you left the hospital feeling really upset and anxious about not being examined. This is definitely not what we would want any of our patients to experience and for that I am really sorry. I have shared your comments with the Manager of the service so that they can share your feedback with the staff and emphasise the negative impact this has had on you. I am hoping that you have been able to see your GP regarding your leg and have been advised on the correct treatment. Thank you again and I hope that your leg is healing well. Kind regards Clare Blackburn (Head of Patient Experience)

Review titled Rude receptionist

The services were good except reception. First time I met so rude receptionist at Pontefract hospital. I arrived and explained that I called 111 and they advised to visit hospital, she replied disrespectfully. I had 40 degrees fever and horrible headache, I couldn't speak loudly and she was really rude. The whole conversation made me more upset than I had already been. I regret that I didn't note her name.

We visited Pontefract UTC. It was horrendous, the place was packed to the rafters, there were children who had been waiting over 5 hours with head injuries. This is such an important and well used facility, excellent staff but not enough of them. The receptionist was exceptional. It urgently needs funding and staffing. We treated our son at home in the end, which was much better for his wellbeing than sitting in there and not getting sleep. I don't think I'll trust our children's health with this hospital again.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your recent visit to our Urgent Treatment Centre at Pontefract Hospital. I am really sorry to read of your experience and for the exceptionally long delays you describe in your feedback. We are experiencing a significant increase in the number of patients we are seeing on a daily basis to our Emergency Departments and our Urgent Treatment Centre. Staff are trying to manage these lengthy waits as much as they can but unfortunately, our patients are having to wait much longer than we would like. We fully acknowledge and appreciate how this negatively impacts on patient experience. Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to try and reduce the length of time patients are having to wait. I would like to say thank you for your kind words towards the staff in the department and it is lovely to read how appreciated our staff are. Thank you again and I hope your son is recovering well. Kind regards Clare Blackburn (Head of Patient Experience)

Came with an ankle injury (fracture) Receptionist was very polite and helpful. Only sat about 5 mins before being called in to see nurse/doctor. All staff from doctors nurses X-ray staff and receptionists were great and very nice. I was in and out in under an hour. They are definitely doing an efficient job. Would definitely go there again if needed and would recommend. Thankyou for a great service.

Review titled Terrible experience

I took my partner here after he collapsed on the toilet as recommended by our GP practise. He had been ill for a few days before this happened. When we got to see someone after 2.5 hrs we were told we needed to leave as he had covid. I would like to put here that no test was carried out and when we did our own it was negative. They woman who saw him wouldn't even listen and even laughed when I explained that he'd stopped breathing when unconscious and told me he'd be dead if that happen. I brought him there to make sure he hadn't caused any damage when he collapsed and nothing was looked into because she assumed he had covid. I feel covid was used as an excuse to get through numbers quicker. I am so angry about the experience and feel let down.

Dear Chelsea Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your partner's experience whilst visiting one of our services. I am so sorry to read of the experiences you have described which definitely fall short of the standards we aspire to here at the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. I can only begin to imagine what a worrying time it must have been for you and your partner and it is disappointing to read how staff laughed at you when you shared your concerns with them. This is not something we would want anyone to experience and for that I am sorry. It is difficult to look into this further without some additional details and therefore, I wondered if you would be happy to contact our PALS team (myh-tr.palsmidyorks@nhs.net). The team would be able to look into your concerns further. Thank you again for sharing your concerns with us and I hope your partner is recovering well. Kind regards Clare Blackburn (Head of Patient Experience)

I attended Pontefract hospital in February 2024 for a hip replacement. The staff at the hospital were fantastic, the care and support I received was excellent. All aspects of care managed very well such as physio therapy.

Review titled Wonderful Care, Lovely Staff
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Mark Robinson - Posted on 12 February 2024
A really positive experience, I had a knee replacement and spent a couple of nights on Ward 7 afterwards, all I can say is that the staff were wonderful, from my pre op appointment, the way that I was looked after pre op and post op. The advice that I was given about pain management was invaluable. I am recovering well and would recommend the Orthopaedic Department and Physios to anybody. I was just sad that I couldn't say thank you personally to everyone who cared for me so well. Thank You very much.

Review titled Service not fit for Purpose
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Siobhan - Posted on 15 January 2024
Pain clinic. Really poor experience, initially told of a care pathway etc. None of that is true. Initially saw someone who came across as caring. Explained I would be on a pathway of care. I would see a good physio who would put a plan in motion for me, that I would be given the help I need after failed surgery. Utter garbage. I had to chase and then received a physio appointment where I was told to do what I was already doing. No pathway. No plan. Just seek mental health help if pain is too much. I wish I had never attended, waste of petrol, waste of time off work. I have complex pain now due to issues, it wasn't even discussed. Pain management is basically go away and mange it yourself.

Review titled Great Service
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Stephen Fox - Posted on 31 October 2023
I visited the department, after not being able to get a GP appointment for over a week. I was experiencing a Asthma attack and not able to control it. Check in reception OK, triaged after about 15 minutes. The waiting area was full. Saw after 2:30hrs, which I know is far less than a Hospital A&E unit. Staff brilliant, despite me feeling I had developed a chest infection, I was thoroughly examined, chest infection confirmed, medication prescribed. Feel a bit guilty about using this facility as I feel more could be done by my GP's but it's reassuring to know it's there. Thanks.
