Review titled Face masks not required by law anymore
by Ripley Cancer paitent - Posted on 02 October 2023
I had an appointment booked recently at Ripley hospital. This was for a dressing change for an infection complication following bowel cancer surgery. I arrived at the hospital in plenty of time for this and found the second set of double doors to be closed which I thought was strange as on lots of previous appointments were open. Luckily for me a cleaning member of staff was going through the door at the same time and held the door for me. The was shutter was down. I then had to wait in a queue to be seen to. I was asked to sit in a chair at the door to the reception area and give my details. This was all well and good until I was told to wear a face mask to which I refused and said that it is not required by law anymore. I was then met with a response of the rules have changed and its different for different areas. Again, I refused and said I’ll come and speak to the matron next week. I was met with well you have to wear one. At which point I left saying I’ll speak to the matron next week. I then had to use my back to open the door to make this the easiest and most comfortable on my stomach. At no point did I receive any communication from the hospital about they have had a covid outbreak and it is now required to wear a facemask for pre booked appointments. Also, There is no airflow through the building if the doors are kept shut, which the NHS says is the best way of preventing the spread of covid, but also to sit facing a receptionist with no screen for protection. Surely this poses a greater risk of spreading anything. I am more than happy to come and speak to someone about this matter if you need any greater insight to all this. If a facemask is required, I will wear one so we can discuss this.

Hello, Thank you for your feedback, I am really sorry that this was your experience. I am sorry that you did not receive any communication prior to your planned appointment with regards to wearing a face mask. The rate at which Covid is spreading is increasing, we have therefore taken some measures to try and protect our patients, their carers our Volunteers, our staff and our services so that everyone can continue to use them. When attending our Urgent Treatment Centres some patients with certain symptoms are now being asked to wear a face mask. Wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent people from contracting any airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks or sneezes they could release germs into the air that may infect others nearby. Face masks are part of an infection control strategy to help prevent further spread of infection. You are absolutely right and this is not a legal requirement, however this decision is supported regionally by NHS England and we are really grateful for our patients support in helping us to protect everyone. Our staff have been advised to ask patients if they would wear a mask but if they decline for any reason they should still be seen without one. I am really sorry if this was not communicated correctly to you and I would like to reassure you that we have reminded all staff of the guidance. I understand that recently the inside doors at the Urgent Treatment Centre were broken which will be why they were not opening as they normally would and needed pushing open on arrival. I am really sorry that you had difficulty accessing the building and am relieved that the domestic staff were able to help you, I can confirm that the doors are now fully working. That same day there had been a fire alarm go off, when the fire alarm goes off the shutter comes down automatically then it can't be raised until the alarm is silenced. Unfortunately staff then struggled to get them raised again as there was a problem with silencing the alarm which prolonged them being down at that time. I am genuinely sorry that your experience was not a positive one and I hope that the above reassures you regarding your concerns. If you would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Experience Team at DCHST.PatientExperienceTeam@nhs.net or 01773 525119. Thank you

Review titled What a fantastic service and credit to the NHS.
by Alibongo2 - Posted on 11 July 2023
After having an ankle reconstruction operation in June, which required a cast on my leg, I had to attend Ripley Urgent Treatment Centre today, as the cast was affecting my circulation and I was concerned about potential signs of infection. Whilst there, I was treated with great care and respect. Staff were all professional but friendly and provided fantastic support to both myself and my husband. The situation was swiftly addressed and I felt listened to and consulted at every point of my visit. What a fantastic service and credit to the NHS.

Review titled Don’t waste your time

Arrange work around an 845 appointment for an X-ray to be told I don’t have an appointments and go to urgent treatment wait for the rude receptionist 10 minutes while she’s talking about what she had for dinner to be then told completely different to what the nurse told me last week. The receptionist was rude and interrupted me and spoke down to me like a toddler. Don’t give appointment’s if you’re not going to honour them. I’ll just stay in pain and let the injury get worse thanks for nothing

Review titled Fast service however health issue missed

So I have had a few great experiences with ripley minor Injury’s/urgent service. The staff are always very friendly and it is much quicker than other out of hours services. My only concern/ wanting to make staff/ future patients aware is my last visit. I had sliced 2 of my fingers with a bread knife and I was in quite a lot of pain and feeling very anxious. The staff were friendly but didn’t allow my husband with me which when I had been having a panic attack not long before over it didn’t leave me feeling great but that’s not my main concern. My main concern is then told me I hadn’t cut through anything they could see and tried to get me to bend my fingers, I was in pain so only did this slightly at the main bend and they moved on and dressed it and sent me away. It’s been a month now and it’s been found I can not bend the tops of them fingers at all I have sliced through a tendon and now it’s too late to repair. If it had been fully checked out when there and seen by a hand specialist within the week I could have saved them tendons with 1 quick surgery. Now it will be 2 and extensive hand therapy.

Review titled Appalling customer service

Arrived at 18.05. Waited until 19.40 to be seen by nurse. Extremely rude and said she didn’t have time to remove the earring back from daughters earlobe as they closed at 20.00. Suggested we go to royal derby even though we told her we didn’t have a vehicle (2 buses and over 1.5 hours away. She has her GCSEs next week and her ear is hurting and doesn’t have time to travel to derby and wait for hours to be treated . I work for nhs and have never come across such a rude and disrespectful nurse before

Review titled Excellent care

My elderly mother spent 10 days on the Butterley Ward following a fall and received faultless care whilst there. Every single one of the staff must be highly recommended for their kindness, care and dedication. The standard of meals was also excellent and must have contributed greatly to my mother's recovery.

Review titled Poor practice
Rated 1 star out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 30 March 2023
The practices at this urgent treatment centre need reviewing. The staff were generally nice, apart from the nurse when it was time to examine our injury, totally disinterested, clearly miserable and refused to have a proper look, insisting that they will only investigate injuries after 2 days. Speaking to others in the waiting room this is common practice at Ripley, plenty of people who’d been refused an examination and were now coming back after 2 days - one of whom had been walking round on a broken foot for 2 days. Absolutely shocking.
