  1. Review titled Frustrating for staff and patients alike

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Phil - Posted on 03 January 2023

My mum went to A&E on 27.11.22 by ambulance. We followed up in the car and could not park at the hospital or on Wigan Lane. Definitely more on site parking required. Arrived to find the corridors overflowing with patients and mum joined the queue. Ambulance staff stayed with her and I have to say all the ambulance staff were fantastic and doing a great job. Corridor nurses had been deployed and I have to say the whole of the nursing staff were fantastic- I have only one negative comment and that is that communication could be better. I appreciate the staff are busy but no-one came to see us to tell us what was happening and when we asked no-one seemed to know. Overall mum was on a corridor for 24 hours under full lighting and general hustle and bustle of a busy area, she was only about 30 yards from the main A&E waiting room so she found it difficult to rest. she went on a ward the following day and the area was very good (Standish Ward) Positives hardworking staff - including ambulance crews - negatives were the wait on corridors, noise and full lighting which for an 85 year old was hard. Communication could be improved. Overall conclusion was that staff did their best and were lovely and hardworking but our experience highlighted the shameful under funding of the NHS by successive governments. Please pass on our thanks to the staff in A&E and Standish Ward

  2. Review titled Finding a ward online

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Ann Irving - Posted on 18 November 2022

I tried to find Ince Ward, intending to visit, but web doesn't list it. I rang switchboard to ask which department and they said 'Respiratory' but this is not listed. They put me through to the ward, and again I asked which department, and the name they gave isn't listed. So it's impossible to track down the department, and thus to identify the name of the consultant. I asked the ward about visiting as I couldn't find that out from the web. They said 1 2 3 and 6. Then they mentioned that another relative had just beenn in that morning! With limits on the visitor numbers, and the distancce I have to travel, a firm appointment isn't possible so I might make a 200 mile journey and have to turn round and come home if when I ring to book, the maximum is already reached. The website could do a better job to provide information I think.

Thank you for posting your feedback on this website. Please accept our apologies for the confusion and stress this caused. I asked the Trust’s communication team to review your concerns, and they have responded with updating the Trust’s website to find wards using the A-Z menu; whilst we cannot change your experience, I hope the improvements will make a huge difference to our community accessing this site in the future. Once again, thank you for telling us about this issue, which has helped us improve our services. Yours sincerely Vicky Bolton Patient Relations and PALS Manager

  3. Review titled Over stretched A&E

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Scott - Posted on 28 November 2022

I attended a&e on evening of Black Friday 25/11/2022 at the recommendation of my surgeon, I had symptoms of post op PE (blood clot on the lung) which the surgeon wanted checking out. Eventually found a car space, car park ticket machine not working properly so limited cash only option 2-4 hours. Got booked in at reception with a predicted 5 hour wait. I can only say it was chaos, the place was full of people that were not really A&E cases i.e "my son has a cough", with the son playing all around the waiting area. This is probably because GP appointments are not easily available. Waiting area was packed, the few nurses were all over the place. I never once saw a triage nurse call anyone. After 2 hours of waiting and not being spoken to, I decided to leave, after a further hour trying to sign a discharge form, I left. It was like a scene from a cheap disaster movie. Hopefully I may try again another day when the a&e team are less stretched.

Thank you for posting your feedback, I am sorry to read of your experience. I have shared your experience with the A&E team for feedback who have explained that the Emergency Department is currently under increased unprecedented pressures, with much higher demand and patient acuity than usual for this time of year. Unfortunately, this has led to them having long waits to be seen by a doctor. The staff strive to ensure the safety and care of all patients ensuring the sickest patients are prioritised and seen first. I am sorry that you have had this experience, please be assured that we are doing all we can daily to maintain the safety of the department, patients, and staff. If you would like to discuss your experience with a member of the PALS team, please do not hesitate to contact them on 01942 822 376 and they will be happy to assist. 4. Review titled Unapauling

Rated 2 stars out of 5

So I attended a n e via ambulance after having a bad asthma attack and needing 2 nebulisers in the ambulance.. In a n e although I could barely breath I got told to put on a mask. Although my asthma nurse even told me I'm exempt.. I did not put a mask on. I notified a member of staff I was struggiling to breathe which he shrugged me off leaving me panicky.. Later on I had difficulty again where I approached a lady nurse and she was lovely could see I was clearly struggiling. She gave me another nebuliser. She actualy made sure I got the help I needed.. Clearly my my blood work confirmed this.. Some members of staff need to be more considerate.. It was the 1st time I got admitted with asthma to hospital and I must say it certainly left negative effect until the lady actualy helped me

  5. Review titled Car parking

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Ann Irving - Posted on 28 November 2022

Having made several recent visits, it's clear that you need a multi storey car park for, I think, staff. I'd visited at 11am and 11pm and the car parks were full on both occasions. If staff have to find spaces at the same time as visitors, it must be v. stressful for them. Broken or not working pay & display meters won't help raise the funds. But it needs a campaign to improve car parking. Also, the website linked from this NHS one hasn't been updated since 2017. Couldn't PALS find a volunteer to do this?
