Review titled Tough start
Rated 4 stars out of 5

I visited the breast screening service this morning following a 2 week wait referral for a breast lump. On arrival I was met by a very cheery receptionist who checked me in and sorted my paperwork. Sadly I needed to change some details and was called through prior to this being completed. The nurse practitioner I was seen by was ver short and rude to me as my questionnaire was still with the reception team (all completed), she told me that was no use to her. She was cursory at best, there was no attempt to welcome and reassure me at a time when I was alone and understandably worried about what was to come. She then examined me, told me she couldn’t feel anything she was worried about, “it could be a cyst but if so it’s atypical” - as a clinician I can understand this terminology but if I was a layperson this could be frightening. She told me she would arrange a mammogram and ultrasound anyway. I was handed a form and told to go to main x-Ray! Thank god for the radiology team! They were superb! The radiographer who performed the mammogram was kind, gentle and reassuring. The radiologist who reviewed the results and then performed the ultrasound was excellent and could not have been kinder. Please pass on my thanks to the lovely team in X-Ray as they restored my faith in the process.

Dear Patient Thank you for posting a review of your experience. It is great that your care in Radiology was excellent but we are sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience in the Breast Clinic on this occasion. Your feedback is really useful in helping us to improve the service and the issues you have raised will be discussed in a team meeting tomorrow for shared learning. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please contact our PALS team (0118 322 8338 or PALS@royalberkshire.nhs.uk) to arrange a meeting with the matron. Review titled Exemplary

This was a really excellent experience and I was lucky enough to benefit from the decades of experience of the nurse who treated me. I was seen quickly, triage was in a few minutes. Seen and an X-ray done within about half an hour. The highest quality of care, extremely person centred, personable and warm. This was the case last time I had to come here too. Even the receptionist was lovely. The whole team should be very proud of the care they are giving to the community. Thank you.

Review titled Pre op chaos
Rated 1 star out of 5

Pre op assessment unit was absolute chaos. No privacy or respecting patients dignity. Doors all open so everyone could hear. Weighing in corridor hope you don't mind everyone knowing your weight. No queueing system, area not fit for purpose.

Dear Patient Thank you for your feedback; this is really useful in helping us to improve the service. The matron for pre-op has reviewed the clinical area with the team and we recognise that we have not fully adapted to the new surroundings since moving into the new space. The team will with immediate effect move the weighing scales to an alternative area to ensure privacy can be maintained for patients. We are also sourcing a solution for the doors being left open with our IT teams as the Wi-Fi connection can be compromised when the doors are shut. To reassure you, all patients coming to pre-op have a booked appointment and are escorted into the unit to check in by our reception team. This ensures that patients are seen within time order for their appointments. We are sorry that your experience was poor on this occasion but your review has helped us to reassess the new set-up so hopefully future patients will have a better experience . On 14th Sept. I had a CT Angio at the request of an Interventional Radiologist. Some 8 weeks on I am still unable to get even a telecon consult to discuss the results and next steps despite multiple calls to the Radiology Appointments Centre. Poor show!

Review titled Good treatment but could be cleaner
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Danny - Posted on 24 August 2023
I recently visited Royal Berks Hospital and was very disappointed with the Cleanliness, the waiting room was filthy, with paper sick bowls left on seats for prolonged periods, dust on dirt was on most surfaces, which left black marks on my cloths, this was also found in the treatment rooms, where I saw one Nurse walking around with a dust cobweb on their uniform, which was probably picked up from one of the treatment rooms, which were not much cleaner than the waiting room. the triage nurse turned to have a conversation with another person while we were answering on of her questions, then just moved on the the next question where clearly she had not paid attention to the first. while taking an Ecg the paper bedcover was not extended for use and was laid on the bed was not wiped after the last use (we saw the person leave the room as door was left open - my wife was asked to remove her top for the Ecg and mid practice the door was opened and another nurse came into use the computer, leaving the door open with full view of a busy corridor, with no thought to my wife's privacy on the plus side most of the staff were professional and helpful, the Ambulance crew who delt with us were excellent and were grateful for their care, however the cleanliness of the hospital overshadowed any positive experience We had.

Dear Danny Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review. Firstly, we would like to extend our profuse apologies for the lack of privacy shown to your wife. This has been highlighted for discussion during one of our clinical handovers and also cascaded to clinical teams during their team meetings – as a clear reminder. It is disappointing to note that during your recent visit to our Emergency Department, you found it to be filthy – in particular the waiting room and a clinical cubicle where your wife was treated. We actively strive to maintain really high standards, both in terms of our excellent patient care, safety, both for our patients and our staff and cleanliness – all of which are paramount. It therefore makes for disappointing reading to see that on this occasion we fell short of this. We would like to apologise and to reassure you that we have addressed your cleanliness concerns with both our housekeeping and nursing teams, reiterating our high standards and expectations. It is reassuring that your overall experience was that of professional and helpful staff in the Emergency Department, in particular our SCAS (South Central Ambulance Service) colleagues. We do hope that your wife is now recovering well. Hayley Hughes, Directorate Service Manager - Emergency Care

Review titled Minor Injuries Unit Excellent
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Rachel H - Posted on 15 August 2023
I took my 3 year old daughter to the Royal Berkshire after an accident whilst visiting a friend. We're not from the area so I had a lot of anxiety visiting a hospital I did not know but everyone from the receptionist at paeds A&E, the triage nurse, the advanced practitioner and the radiographer were excellent. They were kind and patient with my daughter whilst they examined her, took her xrays and got her arm in a cast. The advanced practitioner even gave her a lovely knitted animal to take home for her being brave. The whole thing from registration to treatment and going home only took 2 hours which is very much appreciated whilst dealing with a toddler in pain. They even sorted getting my daughters xrays sent to our local hospital so we could get a follow up in our local fracture clinic sorted. An fabulous service from dedicated caring staff. Thank you to everyone involved.

My visit to the One Stop Urology Clinic last Friday was a pleasant experience from start to finish. The various treatments were carried out efficiently, with help and encouragement from nursing staff and consultants. From arrival to departure I felt welcomed and supported by everyone I came into contact with. Full marks!!
