  1. Review titled Superb

Rated 5 stars out of 5

The Care Navigator was superb he helped us check in on the IPad. There was bottles of water. A lady came round and asked if anyone wanted a hot drink. Yes we waited a while. From the Triage to the Doctor they were all incredible. This is now our 4th experience with Blackburn and we have no complaints at all.

  2. Review titled Worst experience

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 April 2023

Took my mother to a and e as ambulance would have took too long so 111 told us we would get there quicker on our own. Waited hours then given an appointment. Came at the appointment time and then waited 3 hours to then be told the doctor has gone home so we have to come back the following morning. Absolute waste of time and terrible practice. Whilst my mum was sat in pain for hours in the end she had to go home with the same pain and without seeing a doctor at all. We could have been told way before that the doctor had gone. Always a bad experience at Royal Blackburn hospital one of the worst hospitals.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on NHS Website about your mother’s recent visit to the Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. I am extremely sorry to hear of your experience and have fed your comments back to the senior staff and the Head of Nursing- Emergency and Acute Pathway. Confirmation has been provided that the Trust has introduced a web-based tool, designed by NHS Digital, to support clinical decision making at both of our Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) at Blackburn and Burnley to ensure patients get the right treatment at the right time to meet their clinical needs. Upon arrival, patients are asked to input their details into the tool via a smart device. The tool will guide the patient through a series of questions to assess and prioritise their condition. Once this information is gathered, we will be able to determine whether the patient needs to be seen immediately or if they can be asked to return at a later, appointed time. This initiative is currently being rolled out nationally and it is expected to reduce crowding in the waiting areas making it much safer for patients and colleagues. Any patient with chest pain will be advised to immediately make themselves known to a receptionist for urgent attention. In order to support patients using the tool and outcomes, we have implemented the role of a ‘Care Navigator’ who will support patients on arrival and direct them to the iPads as well as answering any questions they may have. A potential outcome from using the Streaming Tool can be an appointment and the Care Navigator will support the booking of appointments once the tool is completed, using a computer on wheels. The role will support patients and enhance their experience whilst on the Urgent Treatment pathway. We do experience unexpected unavailability of our teams, and when this occurs patients who have appointments have to be re-allocated by other clinicians, which sadly does result in delays from initial appointment. We regret that the reason for delays was not made clear. We also have a clinical working group focusing on pain control and management for patients in the Emergency pathway as there are continuous improvements we can make. If you would like to provide further information about your experience you can contact the Patient Experience team by email at patientexperience@elht.nhs.uk Or if you prefer you can discuss further any concerns you may have about our services with our East Lancashire Hospitals Trust Customer Relations team on 01254 733700 or complaints@elht.nhs.uk who can advise you of your options in raising these concerns further. Many thanks again for taking the time to provide your feedback. Sarah Ridehalgh Patient Experience Facilitator

  3. Review titled NHS at its best.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My wife had a accident in Clitheroe yesterday, so I took her to the Health centre, they sent us to Accrington hospital who then sent us to Blackburn hospital. Each place took very good care of my wife, when arriving at the emergency unit we were let into the room by a friendly nurse and she explained what would be happening. Yes we had a wait, but we were treated with kindness and respect, after a while we where taken to a more comfortable room, given a sandwich and a brew each. Two doctors arrived, one with a bandage hand who was overlooking the other fantastic doctor, first class treatment from start to finish. Thank you so much xx

  4. Review titled Dangerous amount of traffic.

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 24 April 2023

I visited the hospital today to leave my blood vials at Pathology. I am on home heamodialysis. This deposit is time sensitive. As I approached the hospital at 2.25pm, the back up of traffic was ridiculous, queuing down towards Haslingden Road. We gave up and went for coffee for 35 minutes. On coming back, the traffic was worse. I ended up having to walk part way. (Not good for someone just off dialysis). After leaving the hospital, another lady and I couldn't cross the zebra crossing outside the main entrance as a car was parked on it dropping someone off. The oblivious driver proceeded to reverse actually bumping both of us. The point of this review is that the traffic control at the hospital is horrendous. As a sight impaired person it certainly isn't safe. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have car park staff outside the building to try and control the chaotic traffic. It would definitely be safer for some of us.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on NHS Website about your issues accessing the visitor’s car park and experiencing an incident at the zebra crossing outside the main entrance of Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. I am extremely sorry to hear of your recent experience and have fed your comments back to senior staff including the Estates PFI Contract and Performance Lead and NCP Car Park Contract Manager. Confirmation has been provided that the Trust has commissioned a piece of work with Project Co (Consort, PFI owner) to review the zebra crossing area adjacent to the entrance of Old Bank Lane and the main entrance to look at how we can make improvements to the area/layout in the interest of patient safety; with a view to commissioning works this financial year, funding permitting. The Car Parking Manager has acknowledged that the visitor's car park fills every afternoon between 1 pm and approximately 3:30 pm, due to capacity the barriers allow one vehicle to enter as one leaves. 5. Review titled Excellent service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Sheila Astley - Posted on 12 April 2023

On Good Friday evening,I was experiencing extreme pain and difficulty in breathing, my husband phoned 999,the result was ambulance arrived within 30mins. The two paramedics were, professional and very kind, putting me at ease. I was transported to A&E, and after about 3hours,I was assessed by an equally professional and kind doctor, who ordered xrays, and this was done by friendly staff once again. Fortunately no fractures found and I was allowed to go home. Thankyou NHS and staff of Blackburn Royal Hospital. 5 stars from me.

  6. Review titled Urgent care unit

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 30 March 2023

Having visited A & E on Wednesday 29 March at midday to accompany a very elderly female relative who arrived by ambulance, I would like to say that, yes you do wait several hours to be placed on a ward but they have to wait for blood test results and a Doctor to review them. The waiting room was full, the corridors full of patients on trolleys as bays were full but the staff were excellent and attentive. Sat observing for several hours, you notice that the staff have to be very resilient and patient and all were very professional. The cheerful patient care team offered sandwiches and a hot drink. All staff were caring when attending to my relative but special mention to the Staff Nurse in Urgent Care: her sense of humour plus keeping us informed of the situation was excellent!

Our 95year old uncle was admitted to Resus on the 19/3/2023 from the moment he was put to bed the care from doctors& nurseswas impeccable as an ex nurse who had heard some unwanted criticism about Royal Blackburn I was proud to say I was once part of this profession. Unfortunately the outcome was very sad but as I stated the whole staff gave their all no corners were cut they worked their heart out to maintain his dignity ect.the staffs attention was not only for the patient but to the relatives the respect and cordiality that was given was exceptional we can’t praise them enough, a thankyou doesn’t seem enough to all concerned but thankyou to all that was on duty that day

  8. Review titled Thank you NHS

Rated 5 stars out of 5

We had to visit Blackburn Hospital at 8:15pm on a busy Friday evening as our daughter had a suspected broken wrist. After checking in at reception, we were directed into the Children's waiting room. Every member of staff, from the triage nurse, doctor and radiologist were professional, kind and personable. Our daughter received excellent care for which we are extremely grateful. To reach X Ray, we had to walk through the adult section of A & E. It was heartbreaking to see so many people waiting in corridors on beds. Our NHS urgently needs more funding and investment especially for the overworked and under paid staff.

  10. Review titled AMU A..caring, professional

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Carol - Posted on 16 March 2023

Had to be admitted to Blackburn from BGH following respiratory complaint… Admit I waited many hours for a bed however.. Whilst waiting on the corridor was treated with care, compassion and utmost respect from amazing staff who were under extreme duress..never seen so many people waiting on trolleys for admission. Eventually admitted to AMU side A … Fantastic service from every member of staff..auxiliary nurse outstanding with care…and staff nurses amazing..even whilst having student nurse with her for training purposes she was patient, kind and displayed how nursing should be… I was so impressed with the lengths staff go to, to ensure everyone is attended to even under the strain the service is going through… Everyone did their very best and I applaud each and everyone Porters, greeter, doctors, nurses … Thankyou for every bit of care I received
