  1. Review titled Amazing Service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Tracy Mulligan - Posted on 03 January 2023

I had the unfortunate visit to A&E following a ladder collapse under me. From the moment the ambulance crew arrived a Dr came and sorted out who needed a X-ray and within 10 mins of arriving I had X-ray. Within 20 minutes after I was in a cubical being assessed and top up of pain relief. CT scan showed no breaks just a very bad bruise and shock. Though extremely busy staff were efficient, professional and friendly. Thank you for the amazing care in difficult times.

  2. Review titled Poor practice

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Emma - Posted on 09 February 2023

My father was admitted taken to A&E from his care home in January after GP and district nurses refused to come and see him. He has dementia and was in severe pain with what we thought was a UTI. He was very distressed and was presenting with unusual behavior which staff put down to the dementia. We asked repeatedly for him to be given pain relief as his behavior was out of character and he was curled up with pain. It took several hours before he was seen with no pain relief. He was finally seen and admitted with a UTI, sepsis and pneumonia. Disgusting treatment all round. No excuses.

  3. Review titled A group where mental issues could be discussed

    by PERRYE711 - Posted on 28 April 2023

I had a heart attack in October 2022 and went into Barnstaple Hospital, where I received excellent care. In November 2022 I was transferred to Exeter Hospital, where I had an angioplasty which resulted in 2 stents being inserted. Once again, I received excellent care. On discharge I signed up for cardio rehab and started in March this year, again this was very good. I suffered mentally after my discharge and asked if there were any discussion groups I could attend so I could discuss my concerns with others who had had heart attacks, but unfortunately there are no such groups. Speaking to others who have had heart attacks, almost all suffered mentally and thought a talking group or groups would be a good idea. My brother had a heart attack 19 years ago, so fortunately I could discuss my concerns over the phone with him. He told me that he had had similar mental problems after his heart attack and there were no discussion groups where he lives . Discussing with him certainly eased my concerns, and I think that if there were groups where mental issues could be discussed it would put people's minds at rest.

  4. Review titled What can they do better? Communicate!

    by talontw84 - Posted on 24 March 2023

I was referred to Royal Devon and Essex Hospital by my Dr. I had to have my faeces checked and complete a questionnaire and then wait to receive an appointment. I waited and waited and waited but heard nothing, my condition was worsening so in the end I had to pay for treatment privately. Eventually I did hear back from them, but I had already been treated privately by this point. I will need to cancel the appointment now. So what can they do better? Communicate! Communication is so important. If they'd have communicated with me about my appointment then I would have waited a little while longer and not paid for treatment.

  5. Review titled Total Hip Replacement: Excellent Service at Exeter

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Hip Replacement - Posted on 16 February 2023

I had a total hip replacement in Dec 2022. I was very impressed with the whole hip team. Kind, caring consultant who listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Excellent, expert ward staff who really knew what they were doing. Spot on physio team as well. The ward was pleasant, with very focused care. I would really recommend Exeter for this surgery if you're looking for an outstanding team. It's gold standard care - focussing on early mobilisation and quick discharge from hospital. I have RA and infection is an additional risk. It was all managed with great skill and care and the outcome is as good as they promised it would be. I hope this helps anyone about to undergo similar surgery.

  6. Review titled Caring, helpful and just amazing

by Angel star - Posted on 01 December 2022

My son had a doctors appointment at the end of November. After seeing the doctor we were told to go to A & E, We arrived at 3:30pm and were seen within 30 minutes, and he was admitted straight away went to Ham 5. He had some treatment and was then was admitted to Otter ward. From the time we arrived and got on to the ward the level of care was absolutely amazing, beyond the call of duty. I would like to say an extremely massive thank you to all in A & E , Ham5 , ENT and Otter ward - to all the staff that helped and cared for my son. They are so caring, helpful and just amazing. That was the first time any of us had been to the hospital and you are all amazing. I wish I could give you all a medal and personally say a massive thank you to all of you. Please pass this on to the amazing staff.

  7. Review titled First Class care

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My daughter has had excellent care and attention at the Women’s Health centre and following surgery today at the hospital. She was treated with kindness, dignity and emotional support from all the staff. Things were explained thoroughly to her and she was looked after so well and made sure she was fully fit and able to be discharged home. They are truly wonderful. I can’t thank them enough for everything they did from beginning to end during the most traumatic few weeks imaginable. They are all heroes.

  8. Review titled Made to wait outside in the cold

by Jazscb - Posted on 29 November 2022

To who this may concern and please forward to who needs to know! One day towards the end of November, my mother was asked by her GP to attend A&E due to not being able to see properly out of her right eye. She has a record of mini strokes so it was a worrying time for us. She went straight to A&E where she was seen by a triage nurse, where she explained what had happened and we informed the nurse about my mothers stroke past, they took her blood pressure and sent her back to wait for a further 3 hours in waiting room for a doctor. 3 hours later she was seen by a lovely doctor, where again she explained and the doctor asked her questions about her eye and stroke as her symptoms was numbness in the face and was feeling very well and a headache. The doctor informed her they were going to do a ECG on her and see about getting her seen by the eye clinic as she has had problems with her eyes in past. The doctor returned and told us to go straight down to the eye clinic without doing the ECG. We went straight down to the eye clinic and we told the eye clinic staff member that my mother had been told to come straight here by the emergency department. We were told we couldn't wait there as had to wait for a appointment and was told to go outside next to the bus stop in the freezing cold and wait for a phone call as the internet access in there was all over the place, we waited near the front entrance inside as managed to get internet there but was freezing still. We waited nearly 2.5 hours before I stormed back in after not getting a call or anything and it was late afternoon and we had been at the hospital all day since late morning. The same member of staff saw me and said oh yes last name again and I told them and they told us to go sit down, when we finally got called in to see the doctor he was gobsmacked as was told she had a appointment at 2pm when got told by A&E to go straight there. I explained that we were told by a staff member for the eye clinic to wait outside in the freezing cold, not to come straight in, we were very angry and still am. I feel like this staff member needs more training rather than talking about personal conversations while they have people standing around waiting to speak to someone for help, the doctor told us that they couldn't rule out my mum may have had a stroke due to her having a headache but she had blood spot in her eye. I am ashamed of this because since her last second stroke in December 2019 she has been bothered with, due to covid her follow up appointment in march 2020 got cancelled, but nothing was ever rearranged after we got told they would rearrange. The only time she gets bothered with it is when she has had a stroke or symptoms. But here is the thing the eye doctor was shocked as at A&E she was not checked to see if she has had one so the eye doctor said because she had a headache he doesnt think its a stroke but cant rule it out. So she was left for hours not knowing if she has had a stroke, as a hospital you should be ashamed. Dont get me wrong you all under stress with covid and the NHS but she needed the help and didnt get it and isnt getting anything from the stroke ward. And I would like answers and clearly I feel some staff need more training and to be told not to talk about doing their food shopping while patients are stuck in front of them.

  9. Review titled Poor Communication

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 February 2024

Initial surgery and treatment of 12-year old son was excellent. Soft-tissue injury to the knee. Communication surrounding discharge was appalling. Safeguarding issues at the time with court orders in place. The assumption was that because I am the father, I had less of a say in discharge arrangements including conversations in private between the nurse and the mother, before trying to persuade me in front of my son to vary the previously agreed discharge arrangements. This conversation should have been held between me, the nurse, the physio and my son's mother - not in front of a 12 year old who had already dealt with issues from an ongoing divorce. Not to mention that social services had previously removed my son from his mother and I had paperwork stating that as protective parent, I was to take actions to protect him from previously unsafe behaviour. The immediate assumption of the nurse was that because the mother and I wanted different things around the discharge, that she automatically had my son's best interests in mind and I did not. Something which, with a short private conversation with me and a cursory look at the paperwork, could have been resolved. Please do not make assumptions based on the gender of a parent when separated parents have conflicting views. Please also have relevent difficult conversations out of earshot of a minor, so that the child can ultimately be presented with the agreed-upon best-interest decision, rather than having to become involved in parental conflict (which I had spent 3 years attempting to minimise as much as possible). Letter sent to Bramble Unit in December 2022 and seemingly ignored.

  10. Review titled Amazing service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Francesca - Posted on 28 February 2023

I sliced my hand open badly and was taken to the A&E department as a result. It was fairly late at night and A&E was packed with people, so I was dreading the waiting time to be seen- however there was no need to be. I was seen within half an hour of arriving and had the loveliest trauma nurse who reassured me thoroughly throughout and applied a dressing and a bandage until I could be seen by someone else to stitch my hand up, which the wait was going to be 7 hours. I asked if I could come back in the morning, which was no problem and I did that. I arrived at 7am the next day and was seen imminently, within half an hour I was on my way back home!! Again, the doctor who treated me in the morning was so lovely and in detail went through my aftercare, and answered any questions I had and put me at ease. It was clear that the staff were under immense pressure and stressed, however they didn't let this show during the consultations and I couldn't thank them enough for the treatment they provided when I was under their care!
