Review titled Messed up appointments, and a lot of disturbance
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 07 April 2025
I have had more than a couple of times my appointments messed and then on the day did not had the actual appointment, as needed. Also the personal is rude, and it is upsetting to have a minimal conversation with them, since they lie about my appointments. They also call me on my personal phone number every next day, and bother me with wrong dates and pretending or demending me to be on wrong days at the hospital....so if I had appointment on Monday, they called me on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from some private numbers (you do not know who is even calling you...why a private number and not the ward number displayed anyway????!!)... And if I have a longer term treatment, for a few months having to go to the hospital weekly, then why they bother me every week since my treatment started and even on a daily basis with private numbers, telling me that I have appointments when I do not have....so it is not enough that I am sick and I have been at the emergency, now I have to take stupid phone calls with appointments messed-up all over the place??? Why this mess??? I get my appointment and done. What is this messing around, and people calling, demending me to he on wrong days present, and fighting with me at the phone about wrong appointments?!!! Also, I am being sent floors up and down through the building, first to an upper floor (there they couldn't take my blood tests)...then being sent to a lower c floor...I have received priority urgent ticket (with the initial appointment at 8am), but then I have been put at the end of the waiting lists with 20 other people before me...though on my ticket says Urgent...urgent!....not sure how is fine, and ethical to send a woman with an ectopic pregnancy (and the urgent hospitalisation that I have had multiple times on top, at least 3 times) up and down the floors and make it wait and put it at the end of the waiting list with 20 people before me, when I was here at 8am as my doctor said!!!! So rather than 8am it became 9.30 when I finished! So my whole experience was an absolute mess and just made my state worse physically and mentally too....

Review titled Kind, supportive and so reassuring
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Kayleigh - Posted on 21 February 2025
I had to attend G1 today due to ongoing bleeding. After months of anxiety and uncertainty I met a doctor (who I cannot name due to the rules of this form) who listened carefully and compassionately and really understood what I needed. He put me at ease and went of his way to ensure I left knowing both I and my baby were safe. The nursing team were also working so hard on what was clearly a really busy shift. Extremely grateful.

We are so pleased to read that your doctor listened to your concerns and understood your needs, to support you and your baby and ensure both of your safety. It's lovely to read your recognition of the work the nursing team were doing, too. Thank you again for these lovely comments- we have shared these with the team. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best with any ongoing care or treatment.

Review titled Selfish smokers at the hospital entrance
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 08 November 2024
I'm a Cancer patient. Every time I visit the hospital I am having to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke to get into the building. There are 'No Smoking' signs all over, yet these selfish people ignore them and choose to smoke right at the entrance, and between the entrance and the car park. They may not care about their own health but I care about mine, and I do not want to inhale their exhaled filth. At my previous visit I raised the issue in person but attended an appointment today and nothing has changed. I confronted one of these disgusting people today and explained to them that Cancer patients are using that entrance but they don't care. Royal Hallamshire needs to deal with this issue, it is a problem every time we visit the hospital. If the policy of the hospital is that it is a non-smoking site then why is it not being enforced?

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to share your feedback and we are really sorry to read about the difficulties you have experienced with smokers outside of hospital buildings. We appreciate that this understandably is causing you distress, and we are very sorry about this. This is a very difficult issue to tackle as although we have been a smoke-free site since 2018,enforcement of this can be quite challenging, as 'policing' smoking outside buildings does not fall within our security team's remit and we do not have any sanction and when staff ask people not to smoke outside of buildings, this will normally result in the person moving away from the building temporarily. There is a bill currently going through parliament that will make smoking outside hospitals a criminal offence, and we hope that this will help with preventing smokers outside of hospital buildings too. Smoking is an addiction and smokers are dependent on nicotine, particularly at times of stress, such as attending hospitals. Any solutions focused on smoking are related to behaviour change and managing addiction and therefore progress in this area can feel slow. However, we are aware of this and are taking action around this area. We have recently installed new signage which has been developed with input from behavioural scientists with updated messaging which say "Outdoor spaces are for everyone to enjoy the fresh air, please don’t smoke". These have had a small positive impact, but do not alone solve the problem. The Trust also has a dedicated Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service, and we are supporting hundreds of patients every month to not smoke during their admission and after discharge. In the last 12 months, we have supported around 500 people to stop smoking. We also have a staff stop smoking service, so we are getting more staff on-board with promoting the message and that support is available and effective. If you have a specific issue which you would like us to investigate, please contact our PALS team on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net. The PALS team will ask you to share some personal details in order for us to investigate this matter for you. Once again we are very sorry about this, and we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best with any ongoing care or treatment.

Review titled Excellent care
Rated 5 stars out of 5
by Janet Musson - Posted on 16 October 2024
I attend for my eye injections. Whilst the idea of them is quite stressful the staff make the experience bearable. They explain everything, they stick to appointment times and they work quickly but with care. On most occasions you would hardly know that I have had the injection, once or twice a blood vessel has left me with a bloodshot eye, but this is very rare.

Review titled Entrance to the hospital
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 21 October 2024
As it is now impossible to be dropped off outside the main entrance to the hospital, it is really difficult if you are unwell, or have limited mobility, attending appointments is very difficult! The last thing you want to do is to be traipsing all the way along that corridor past the chapel to get to the lifst on A floor, to get to where you need to be in the main hospital! Recently my husband had to park in one of the drop off bays, fetch a wheelchair, wheel me to the lift, go up a floor, wheel me to the main lifts, take me to G floor, then wheel me to G1, where I was being seen as an emergency, leave me, hurry back to the car to find a space before being able to join me on the ward. Frankly I did not want to be left alone at that time as I was very frightened. Also why aren't patients allowed to use the link corridor to the jessop wing? You can only do so if a member of staff takes you, which surely is not a good use of their time . For many of us, the walk outside is just too exhausting!

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent experience of care. We are sorry to read about your difficulties with logistics of getting to your appointment from the drop-off bay. Almost 2 years ago the Trust took the decision to make B Road a pedestrian only area, with vehicular access only being for emergencies. The area was originally closed off for a period to enable structural work to be undertaken. This was reviewed and overall it was felt to have been beneficial and a much more pleasant and safe environment, with the decision then being that the road should remain closed to vehicles. It is recognised that this does put further pressure on A Road and also that access into the main building is through the use of the lifts. We have reviewed options for improving A Road and we are also working with the council to look at improving access from the roads adjacent to the hospital and hope to see improvements in the near future. We do also have welcomer volunteers at our sites who may be able to help with getting you to your appointment from the drop-off location, so you do not have to navigate this on your own or be left alone while your partner finds a parking space. Please do ask our volunteers (in blue t-shirts near entrances) who are happy to help. I have now received some advice from our Estates team to advise patients can only use the link corridor to the Jessop Wing if accompanied by a staff member. This is to ensure safety and security for the Jessop Wing and because the approach corridor from the Hallamshire Hospital building is a staff only access area, meaning that patients cannot enter the area to get onto the link bridge without being accompanied by a member of staff for the security of this area. I hope this information is helpful and provides some clarity on this point for you. Once again we are really sorry to read about your poor experience, and would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best with any ongoing care or treatment.

Review titled Very long and unecessary wait when in pain.
Rated 3 stars out of 5
by Anonymous - Posted on 30 September 2024
My appointment in the day assessment pain clinic today was 10 30 am. A very busy time for traffic and parking at the hospital. My procedure took place at 3pm. Why get you there at 10 30 am when the procedure was never going to happen in the morning? A very long and boring wait in uncomfortable chairs when we are in pain after all. They could have told us we wouldnt have the procedure until the afternoon.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent experience of care. We are sorry to hear about the long wait you experienced between your arrival and your procedure taking place. The current process for the service's theatre lists (for patients coming for procedures) is that all the patients on the list are asked to arrive at the same time to enable the consent process to be completed for all patients before the procedures take place. Unfortunately, this does mean that some patients have to wait for some time before their procedure. This process is the same as is used in a number of other areas, but the pain clinic team are keen to learn from other areas across the Trust to understand if a more efficient system that they could learn from could be used, so are going to explore options for improving this for patients. The team will also link in with the team responsible for the waiting area to share the feedback about the chairs and to explore any further support which could be provided to patients who have longer waits. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the best with any ongoing care or treatment.
